Queen Camilla Is Moved To Tears During D-Day Celebration Before Being Criticized For ‘Rubbish’ Gesture

Part 1 of 2

Public interest in the royal family has always been especially intense when it comes to its women, and Queen Camilla has often been at the center of that scrutiny.

Camilla Rosemary Shand was born on July 17, 1947, in London. Her father, Bruce Shand, was a British Army officer, and her mother, Rosalind Cubitt, belonged to a prominent aristocratic family. In 1973, she married Andrew Parker Bowles, with whom she had two children, Tom and Laura. The couple divorced in 1995.

Camilla and King Charles III’s relationship began in the early 1970s, but both went on to marry other people — Charles famously marrying Princess Diana in 1981.

After Diana’s death in 1997, Charles and Camilla rekindled their relationship and later married in 2005 in a civil ceremony. She became the Duchess of Cornwall and, despite widespread criticism due to the history surrounding their relationship, she gradually earned public respect through her dedication to charity and royal duties.

Stepping Forward Amid Health Crises

In early 2024, the monarchy faced significant challenges when Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles III would undergo hospital treatment for an enlarged prostate. After he was later diagnosed with cancer, Queen Camilla immediately stepped up, taking on an increased number of official duties.

During this difficult period, Camilla’s resilience became a subject of admiration. At the 80th Anniversary of D-Day in June 2024, she showed rare public emotion, though the following day she faced criticism over her adherence to royal protocol.

Praise for Her Role and Resilience

Queen Camilla received widespread recognition for her composure during this time. Royal correspondent Charles Rae called her a “remarkable asset” to the monarchy, despite once being labeled “the most hated woman in Britain.”
