It’s really significant to reach a milestone birthday, particularly when you approach 90. Dorothy was excited to celebrate her 90th birthday with her daughter Lila and her grandkids, the people she loved the most in her life.
Since Lila wasn’t spending much time with her family, Dorothy was thrilled when Lila promised to plan a modest celebration for her mother. She couldn’t wait for that day to come. The old mother, who felt alone after her husband’s death, enjoyed spending time with her grandkids.

They looked like their father David, whom Lila just divorced, but they also made her think of Lila, her own daughter. Dorothy loved David as if he was her son, which made her unhappy that her daughter and her husband had broken up, but she understood that this was a reality of life and that there was nothing she could do to make things right. Dorothy was quite thrilled on her birthday, but as time went by and Lila was nowhere to be seen, her enthusiasm gave way to fear. Moreover, she was not returning Dorothy’s calls.
The doorbell finally rang after waiting for hours on end. Dorothy answered the door as quickly as she could have given her elderly age. But David was waiting there with a bouquet of flowers and a box of chocolates, not Lila and the grandkids. «Happy Birthday, Mom!» David smiled as he said that.

«David? Whoa, what a surprise! You didn’t have to,” Dorothy said, surprised to see him there. Thank goodness he remembered at all. That was expected, however, since David has always been a very considerate guy. Dorothy extended an invitation to him to supper. David wasn’t sure at first, but he said yes when he saw that Dorothy was by herself.
