My Fiancé Abandoned Me and His Twin Daughters on Vacation, Leaving a Note: ‘I Have to Disappear. Soon, You’ll Understand’

Part 1 of 2

When I decided to join my fiancé and his twin daughters on vacation, I believed it was meant to mark the beginning of a new chapter for us. But instead of relaxation, I found a strange note by the pool that left me utterly baffled. What I didn’t realize was that the real surprise would be waiting for us back home.

I first met Matt three years ago. He was already a father to twin girls, Ella and Sophie, who were just five at the time. Although I had no experience with children, their charm melted my heart almost instantly. Earlier this year, Matt popped the question, and as we began planning our wedding, he suggested we take a getaway—a chance to unwind before diving into the chaos of wedding preparations.

The first couple of days were perfect—relaxing by the pool, soaking up the sun, and enjoying quality time together. But everything shifted on the afternoon of the third day.

After a fun swim, Ella, Sophie, and I returned to the hotel room to find it eerily empty. Matt’s suitcase, clothes, and belongings were gone. My heart dropped. Then I noticed a note on the nightstand, written in his unmistakable handwriting: “I need to leave. Soon, it will all make sense.”

I stood frozen, my mind racing. Why would he vanish without a word? How could I face the girls and explain this? Somehow, I kept it together long enough to get us on the plane home, but the entire trip passed in a haze of confusion and dread.

When we finally walked through the door of our house, I was met with an unexpected sight that made me scream. In the center of the living room was a small bundle wrapped in a blanket. It moved.

“What… what is that?” I whispered, barely audible.

Before I could take another step, the girls rushed ahead of me.

“It’s a puppy!” Ella shouted, dropping her bag and kneeling beside the blanket. “There’s a puppy in here!”

Sure enough, the bundle wiggled, and a tiny St. Bernard poked out its furry head, tail wagging so hard it was a blur.

“Can we keep him? Please, Dorothy?” Sophie pleaded, her eyes lighting up with hope.

I stood there, stunned, as my heart tried to catch up with the situation. Then, I noticed a folded piece of paper tucked into the edge of the blanket. With trembling hands, I opened it.

*“Dorothy, I know leaving like that was abrupt, and I probably gave you the scare of your life. I’m sorry for worrying you, but let me explain. While scrolling through my phone at the hotel, I saw a post from a friend who was looking for homes for these puppies. The moment I saw this little guy, I knew I had to act fast.

I remembered you telling me about your childhood St. Bernard, Max, and how much he meant to you. You said he was your hero, your protector, your best friend. I couldn’t let the chance slip by to bring that kind of joy back into your life.

Thank you for loving me and my girls. Thank you for becoming part of our family. I wanted to surprise you with something that shows how much you mean to us.

I hope Max Jr. brings the same light into your life that you’ve brought into ours. I’m sorry for the chaos—I got carried away by excitement. Forgive me, and please give Max Jr. a scratch behind the ears for me.”*
