The Duke of Sussex has opened up about his strained relationship with the royal family and his hopes for mending it, as his father, King Charles III, fights cancer.
In a heartfelt interview aired by the BBC in early May, Prince Harry spoke honestly about the distance between him and his family, touching on past tensions and expressing a desire for healing and reconciliation.
In a revealing interview, Prince Harry opened up about the ongoing rift with his family, his fight for security in the UK, and his hopes for reconciliation—especially in light of King Charles’s recent cancer diagnosis. Harry reflected on the fallout from his memoir Spare, admitting that some royals may never forgive him, but emphasized that his core concern has always been safety, not revenge.
He expressed disappointment that King Charles refuses to speak with him about the security issue, claiming he’s been treated unfairly since stepping back from royal duties. Despite private security, Harry argued the current protection during UK visits is inadequate—especially when he’s not part of official royal events.
Harry also shared that he was never given a chance to contribute to the decision that removed his police protection, despite offering to pay for it himself. He called the 2020 decision “reckless” and claimed it endangered his family.
Still, the Duke of Sussex ended on a note of hope, referencing his work with the Invictus Games and Canada’s First Nations: “I’ve now found out the truth… So it would be nice to have that reconciliation part now.”
In a past interview with Oprah Winfrey, Harry opened up about how stepping away from royal duties had affected him personally, and how he felt let down by the lack of recognition or support from his family.
He shared that no one had shown any regret. After years of reaching out and warning about what might happen, he said, “It’s been really hard because I’m trying. I am part of the system with them. I always have been.”
He also pointed out that while his brother is still tied to that system, “I have [left it].” When Winfrey asked whether his father had any negative views about the system, Harry replied, “He’s had to make peace with it.”
To understand how Harry ended up where he is now, we need to look back. As he shared in his book “Spare,” Harry was once seen as the more easygoing royal, often described as the fun-loving kid in contrast to his serious older brother, the Heir.
But everything changed when he lost his mother at 12. The grief took over. He struggled with school, acted out in anger, and found life under the constant media attention unbearable. He blamed the press for her death and never really came to terms with living in the public eye.
At 21, Harry joined the British Army. The discipline gave him a sense of purpose, and his two tours of duty earned him national hero status. Yet, the trauma never left him. He developed post-traumatic stress and suffered from panic attacks. More than anything, he craved real, meaningful connections.
Then Meghan entered his life. Their love story and wedding seemed like a fairy tale to the world. But behind closed doors, they were battered by an aggressive press, facing racism, false stories, and constant invasion of their privacy.
In the midst of ongoing struggles, Harry found solace in his family. As Meghan shared on May 4, 2025, the photo she posted of Harry with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, radiated warmth and connection. The black-and-white image, absent of words, spoke volumes on its own.
Captured in a lush garden, Harry is seen walking barefoot on the grass with his children. Archie, holding his father’s hand, walks beside him, while Lilibet sits on his shoulders, her legs dangling playfully. The backdrop of towering trees and blooming flowers adds to the peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere, underscoring a moment of pure family joy amid their challenges.
This tender snapshot serves as a reminder of the bonds that matter most, even when life’s pressures weigh heavily on them.
The open gate in the front draws the viewer in, gently emphasizing the theme of vulnerability and openness — a rare look into the family’s private life, shared without saying a word.
As the calm image spread across the internet, the reactions varied widely. A lot of people focused on Archie, with many remarking on his unexpectedly tall stature.
One person commented, “My, how Archie has grown,” while another added, “If Archie is just 5 – [sic] he is very tall for his age.” A third person made a similar remark, saying, “Oh suddenly the Arch appears to be taller…given the height of his parents that’s unexpected.”
Some were even questioning if the child was actually Archie, with one person wondering, “Is this supposed to be Archi!!! He looks tall, as a 10 years old kid.”
Doubts about the photo’s authenticity also started to emerge. One person focused on details like Harry’s legs and Archie’s height, asking if the image might have been altered.
Another commenter raised a broader concern, writing, “Picture looks photoshopped. Harry’s left ankle has an odd bend.”
The same strange observation was pointed out in another comment: “Oh no, poor Harry! Has he broken his left ankle? That’s such an odd-looking bend, especially with such a long lower leg!” Another person added, “Poor Harry’s left leg snapped at the shin.”
Finally, one user turned their attention back to Archie, asking, “What’s wrong with Archie? Something seems off.”
This photo comes nearly a month after his behavior during a court appearance in London on April 8, where he was making an appeal, was analyzed by body language expert Judi James.
Speaking exclusively to Express, she said, “With his brisk, swaggering walk and his jacket unbuttoned, it would be reasonable to describe Harry’s chosen projected body language mood here as ‘cocky.'”
Judi went on to point out that his chest appeared “puffed and he throws some brusque, celebrity waves to either press or maybe fans waiting to watch him, creating the suggestion that he sees himself as rather heroic and even popular for his current UK court appearance.”
While this behavior might have seemed confident, Judi also noticed some signs that could indicate inner discomfort.
“There is one cue or ‘tell’ though that suggests he might not be feeling quite as brave as he seems to want to make out, and that is the frequent touch on the tie or stomach here that creates an excuse for a self-protective barrier gesture,” she added.
Prince Harry arrived at court around 9:30 a.m. BST with a small security team and was seen waving at cameras. When asked if he’d meet King Charles, he didn’t respond.
In court, his lawyer, Shaheed Fatima KC, argued Harry had been “singled out” and that RAVEC didn’t consult security experts before changing his taxpayer-funded protection. The case focused on a decision that altered his security in the UK, which he claims put his family at risk.
The High Court had ruled RAVEC’s actions weren’t unlawful, but the government’s legal team disagreed in this appeal.
They argued that the prince’s case relied on “small parts of the evidence” and showed “a continued failure to see the wood for the trees.”
During Harry’s court appearance on April 8, he appeared confident but showed some subtle signs of tension as he sought to reinstate a regular security detail in the U.K.
While his legal team questioned the fairness of the decision-making process, the government held firm in its position until the final ruling was made in early May.
