The Patient’s Plea for “Murphy”—A Name That Puzzled Everyone

Part 1 of 2

We didn’t think the man’d make it through the night.

His oxygen levels were dangerously low, and the coughing wouldn’t stop. Nurses told us to keep things quiet, but he kept repeating one word, over and over:

“Murphy… Murphy…”

We assumed it was a person—maybe a son or an old friend. But when I leaned in and asked who ‘Murphy’ was, he murmured, “My good boy. I miss my good boy.”

That’s when it clicked. I called his daughter, who was driving in from out of state, and asked if Murphy was a dog.

Her voice cracked.

“Yeah. Golden Retriever. Thirteen years old. We left him with my brother while Dad’s been in the hospital.”

With a few favors and some side glances, the charge nurse made it happen. And a few hours later, Murphy padded into the hospital room.

For illutrative purpose only

The second he saw the old man, it was like time stopped. He jumped gently into the bed, curled up on the man’s chest, and wagged his tail.

The old man opened his eyes.

And whispered, “Murphy, did you find her?”

Everyone looked around, confused. “Who’s ‘her’?” his daughter asked.

Murphy didn’t answer, of course, just licked his hand and nestled closer. But Walter—his name—suddenly seemed calmer. His hand curled into Murphy’s fur.

“He once found her,” Walter said. “In the snow. When no one believed me.”

At first, we thought it was the meds. But the way he said it—so soft, so certain—told me there was more to it.

Over the next few days, Walter improved slightly. Not fully, but enough to talk and sip some soup. Murphy never left his side.

On day three, he called me over. “You ever believe a dog can save a life?” he asked.

“You mean yours?” I said.

He shook his head. “Murphy saved her.”

He told me about Lizzie—his teenage neighbor from twelve years ago. Sixteen, troubled, but sweet. She used to walk Murphy when his arthritis flared up. Called him “Mr. W.” They’d sit on the porch and talk.

One day, she vanished. Everyone assumed she ran away with a boy. Her mom didn’t question it. But Walter had a gut feeling something was wrong.

He and Murphy searched every morning—around town, through woods, near the quarry. People thought he was crazy.

For illutrative purpose only

Then, one day, Murphy froze by a ridge, barked, and wouldn’t move. Walter found a scarf tangled in the brush.

They found Lizzie shivering in a ditch. She’d run from her abusive stepfather, who knocked her out and left her to freeze. Murphy found her.

“She stayed with me a while,” Walter said. “Until the system placed her elsewhere. We wrote letters. But life got busy. She moved. I got sick. But Murphy… I think he’s always been looking for her.”
