That bright September morning, as usual, Vivian held the hand of her energetic six-year-old daughter, Clara, guiding her through the gates of Meadowbrook Elementary. Clara, curious and full of life, skipped ahead, her laughter ringing like tiny bells. Yet, as Vivian watched her enter the schoolyard, a strange unease settled over her, a feeling she could not shake.
Across the courtyard, another girl was walking with a woman, chatting happily. But Vivian froze. The little girl looked exactly like Clara. Same chestnut bob, the same lively green eyes, the same mischievous dimple on the corner of her smile. From a distance, it was as if the world had placed a mirror in front of her daughter.
Clara’s eyes widened in astonishment. She slipped from Vivian’s hand and ran toward the other girl.
“Mom, look! Who is she?” Clara exclaimed.
The two children stood face to face, their laughter bursting spontaneously as if they had known each other forever. They held hands, twirling and asking rapid-fire questions, sharing secrets only six-year-olds could invent.
Vivian exchanged a bewildered look with the woman accompanying the other child. She seemed just as stunned.
The teacher, watching from nearby, smiled knowingly. “If you told me these girls were twins, I would believe it without hesitation,” she said quietly.
Even as the schoolyard echoed with joyful chatter, a tight knot of worry remained in Vivian’s chest. That evening at dinner, Clara chattered excitedly about her new friend, a girl who looked just like her. Vivian smiled at the innocence of the moment, but the morning’s vision clung to her mind, nagging relentlessly.
A daring thought formed, one Vivian could barely whisper to herself. What if there had been a mistake?

Days later, she bumped into the woman outside school again. Over coffee, small talk slowly gave way to a difficult question. Finally, Vivian asked, her voice almost trembling, “Have you considered a DNA test for the girls?”
The woman, Livia, blinked, momentarily startled. Doubt flickered across her face, and she nodded slowly. “Let’s do it. Just to be sure,” she said.
A few anxious days later, the results arrived. Both women stared at the report in shock. Clara and Livia’s daughter, Elara, had a genetic match of 99.9 percent. They weren’t just look-alikes. They were identical twins.
