Princess Anne, 74, has spoken warmly of Queen Camilla, offering heartfelt praise for the vital role she plays in supporting King Charles.
In a candid conversation with Tatler, the Princess Royal expressed her deep respect for Camilla and the impact she’s had on the monarch, now 76.
Anne’s unexpected comment
Anne shared her thoughts on Camilla’s quiet strength, saying: “Her understanding of her role and how much difference it makes to the King has been absolutely outstanding.”
She added, “I’m sure lots of people do say to her what a difference she’s made, but that is really true.” Describing Camilla, 77, as “incredibly generous and understanding,” Anne made it clear how much she values her sister-in-law’s presence in the King’s life.
A partnership that stands the test of time
Charles and Camilla recently marked their 20th wedding anniversary during a state visit to Italy.
Their relationship, which spans 35 years, has endured many milestones—from Charles’s accession to the throne and his recent cancer diagnosis to the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. Throughout it all, Camilla has been a steady, supportive presence.
Anne noted that Camilla has been instrumental in helping the King maintain a healthy routine, encouraging him to eat lunch regularly and unwind with walks at their Scottish residence, Birkhall.
A quiet nod to the past
During their visit to Rome, Camilla made a touching statement about their marriage by wearing the same ivory silk Anna Valentine coat and dress she wore to their 2005 civil wedding.
The outfit, updated with embroidery by Beth Somerville—a graduate of the King’s Foundation—still retained its original elegance, also reflecting the royal couple’s emphasis on sustainability.
The heart of their relationship
While on tour, Camilla spoke lightheartedly about reaching the 20-year milestone: “Twenty years, who could believe it was 20 years?” Reflecting on the bond they share, she said, “I suppose it’s just sort of friendship, really. Laughing at the same things, getting on with life. We are always going in different directions, like ships that pass in the night really.”
Though their anniversary celebrations were expected to be low-key, Camilla hinted at a private gift exchange and mentioned she had chosen a china gift—traditional for the 20th year.
When jokingly asked if Charles might get a break from his ongoing cancer treatments, she quipped, “Dream on! It would be very nice if we got a day off and went somewhere, but that was not going to happen!”
Anne’s words offer a rare glimpse into the royal family’s inner workings and shine a light on Camilla’s steady, influential presence behind the scenes.
