My Husband Invited Me To His Wedding With The Woman He Betr@yed Me With, Expecting Me To Watch Them Celebrate. Then His Banking App Refreshed And Showed Seventy-Three Cents. When He Demanded, “What Did You Do To Our Money?” I Said, “I Stopped Approving Transfers That Had No Legitimate Business Purpose.”

Part 2 of 3

“You know I would never misuse company money, Lauren.”

“Proper authorization exists precisely because trust does not replace financial controls.”

Three days later, his attorney delivered divorce papers to my office. Cameron arrived home afterward carrying white lilies, the same flowers used at my mother’s funeral and the only flowers he knew I disliked.

“I never wanted our marriage to end through something this painful.”

“You chose to notify me through a courier, so your concern about pain seems unusually selective.”

Cameron claimed we had both been unhappy for years, although three weeks earlier he had discussed traveling through Europe together.

I gave him one final opportunity to speak honestly.

“Are you leaving because another woman has entered your life?”

He met my eyes without hesitation.

“There has never been anyone else, and I would tell you if that changed.”

His answer eliminated the last impulse I possessed to protect him emotionally.

PART 4: THE INVITATION AND THE FINAL LIE

Brooke returned to work two days later carrying my usual coffee order and wearing an expression of carefully measured concern.

“I heard about the divorce, and I am deeply sorry you are experiencing something so painful.”

Looking at her felt surreal because photographs showed that she had selected a wedding gown while allowing me to handle her client responsibilities.

“What exactly are you sorry about, Brooke?”

Her fingers tightened around the cup.

“I am sorry your marriage has ended, although I understand that decision must have developed over time.”

For six weeks, Cameron and Brooke became increasingly careless. He moved into an expensive apartment, while she began wearing a diamond engagement ring she attempted to conceal whenever I entered the room.

Their preferred story claimed our marriage had ended emotionally before their relationship became romantic. People often accept betrayal more comfortably when presented with a respectful timeline, even when reality contains no clean boundary between the final declaration of love and the first secret hotel room.

I documented financial activity rather than their private messages. Every attempted transfer, unexplained company charge, unsupported reimbursement, and unauthorized withdrawal entered a file reviewed by my attorney and an independent forensic accountant.

Cameron was not spending his own available cash because he had already exhausted most of it. He was scheduling wedding expenses while expecting future company distributions to replenish the accounts automatically.

Those distributions required my approval, and I continued requesting proper documentation that never arrived.

Brooke eventually published their invitation online, announcing a celebration of courageous love only three months after the fictional Boston engagement. The office became silent as employees discovered the post.

She entered my office twenty minutes later with a pale face.

“This announcement was not supposed to reach you in such a public way.”

“Did Cameron teach you that sentence, because he used an almost identical version after serving the divorce papers?”

When I asked when their relationship began, Brooke insisted it became serious after our separation.

“Before the separation, Cameron and I maintained nothing beyond a close professional friendship.”

“I possess photographs from Hilton Head, including the beach house, jewelry appointment, bridal boutique, and marriage-license preparations.”

Her performance collapsed immediately.

“How long have you known about those photographs?”

“Long enough to discover how far both of you would proceed while believing I remained foolish.”

Brooke defended Cameron by describing him as financially controlled and emotionally diminished by my competence. According to the version he sold her, I supervised every dollar to prevent him from claiming independence.

“He said you made him feel insignificant inside the company he helped create.”

“Cameron remained free to learn our finances, leave the company, request mediation, or end the marriage honestly.”

Brooke revealed more than she intended when she explained that Cameron feared losing everything.

He had not remained because separating was emotionally complicated. He remained because he wanted the company, investments, house, reputation, and Brooke without paying the cost of obtaining them dishonestly.

When she asked whether I intended to fight for Cameron, I answered truthfully.

“I will not fight for a man who already made his choice, although I will protect everything legally belonging to me.”

That afternoon, an embossed invitation arrived by courier with my name written across the cream envelope. Whether they intended humiliation, courtesy, or proof of their victory no longer mattered.

I marked the acceptance box without hesitation.

PART 5: WHAT SEVENTY-THREE CENTS COULD PURCHASE

On Cameron’s wedding morning, my attorney confirmed that every financial safeguard complied with our operating agreement and the temporary orders governing our separation.

Company reserves remained healthy, but neither partner could withdraw substantial funds without the required authorization. Disputed transfers received additional review, while business accounts could not finance personal ceremonies, homes, or honeymoons.

I had not emptied Cameron’s personal account. He accomplished that by spending available cash while assuming I would eventually approve transfers designed to rescue him.

After pending charges cleared, his immediately available balance became seventy-three cents.

I wore an ivory tailored suit to the ceremony, not because I wanted to imitate the bride, but because Cameron once said the outfit made me look dangerously composed.

The guests stared when I selected a seat in the front row. Brooke faltered upon seeing me, while Cameron interpreted my presence as proof that I remained unable to release him.

After the ceremony, his confidence survived until the banking alerts arrived.

A venue coordinator approached while Cameron refreshed his application.

“Mr. Blake, the final reception payment has failed, and our contract requires settlement before dinner service begins.”

“Run the card again because sufficient money should already be available.”

“We attempted both cards listed in your file, and each transaction was declined.”

Brooke turned toward him sharply.

“You promised the estate, honeymoon, and house deposit were completely funded.”

“Everything will be resolved once Lauren stops interfering.”

Cameron stepped away from the ceremony platform and confronted me before the watching guests.

“You restricted my accounts because you wanted to humiliate me publicly.”

“The bank restricted disputed activity after you attempted unauthorized business transfers, while your personal balance reflects your personal spending.”

“That money belongs to me because I created half the company.”

“A portion may eventually belong to you after the divorce valuation, although you cannot award yourself that portion in advance.”

His telephone rang again, but he rejected the call.

“Fix this before you cause permanent damage to our firm.”

The command summarized our entire marriage. Cameron had always expected me to fix missed deadlines, incorrect forecasts, unsupported expenses, tax problems, and client promises he made without consulting anyone.
