Three Days After Our Divorce, My Former Husband And His Mistress Mocked Me For Dining With An Older, Wealthier Man. She Smirked, “Already Found Someone Richer?” I Took His Arm And Calmly Replied, “Careful—The Man You Are Insulting Is My Father.” Their Laughter Vanished Instantly.

Part 2 of 3

Graham answered from beside the fireplace.

“Vivian has held voting shares in Hart Global since turning twenty-five, and she currently chairs our Infrastructure Investment Committee.”

Margaret became visibly pale. I opened the file and pushed it toward Adrian.

“The authorization page appears on page seventeen.”

Beneath Graham’s approval line was another signature block identifying me as Vivian Elaine Hart, Chair of the Infrastructure Investment Committee.

“My vote can reject this loan regardless of whatever my father recommends.”

Part 3: The Breach Inside Hart Global

Before Adrian could respond, Graham’s assistant entered with a tablet displaying an urgent security alert. Someone had accessed the confidential Bellamy financing file at 2:13 that morning and downloaded the page containing my signature authority.

The intrusion originated from credentials assigned to Lila Monroe’s consulting company, Monroe Strategic Partners, a Delaware-registered shell that had received several minor research contracts from one of Hart Global’s subsidiaries. However, Lila’s external access should never have opened a protected investment file without approval from a senior administrator.

Marcus Doyle, Graham’s security director and a former FBI agent, entered moments later with preliminary findings.

“A secondary administrator approved Ms. Monroe’s access at 2:12 this morning. That account belongs to Elliot Hayes, Hart Global’s Deputy Chief Financial Officer.”

Elliot had worked beside Graham for nineteen years, earning enough trust to enter the most sensitive financial systems within the company. My father’s silence revealed how deeply the discovery affected him.

Adrian reached for his phone.

“I will contact Lila and demand an immediate explanation.”

“You will contact nobody until investigators preserve every available record,” Graham replied. “Warning her now would provide an opportunity to destroy evidence.”

By noon, a Wall Street gossip site reported that an international investment corporation was considering a rescue package for a senior executive’s former family. Although the article avoided names, enough details identified the Bellamy project to its lenders. By late afternoon, banks suspended their remaining construction disbursements and demanded accurate financial statements.

Adrian returned to Graham’s office at five o’clock without Margaret. His expensive suit appeared rumpled, while defeat had replaced the entitlement I remembered from our marriage.

“The project’s condition is substantially worse than the proposal indicates. Hidden cost overruns have reached thirty-eight million dollars, and my father submitted altered projections.”

“Did you knowingly sign those projections?”

Adrian lowered his head.

“I signed them because Frederick promised the missing capital would arrive before anyone reviewed the underlying numbers.”

His admission exposed him to a securities-fraud investigation, but another question mattered immediately.

“Besides your father, who understood the real construction figures?”

“Lila helped restructure several vendor agreements, so she knew the actual expenses.”

“When did she discover that Graham Hart was my father?”

Adrian avoided my eyes.

“After the restaurant confrontation, she said your indifference toward money finally made sense.”

Marcus entered carrying banking records. Payment to the gossip website came from a Delaware company registered to forty-nine-year-old Laura Monroe.

When Adrian saw the passport photograph, every trace of color disappeared from his face.

“Frederick told our family that Laura Monroe died seventeen years ago.”

A message from Lila arrived immediately afterward.

“Ask your father who my mother really is, because every person in your family has lied about her.”

The message included an old photograph showing Frederick wearing a signet ring bearing the Bellamy crest. An identical crest appeared on the necklace Lila had worn since childhood.

Our financial investigation had unexpectedly become a seventeen-year-old family mystery.

Part 4: The Woman Who Was Supposedly Gone

Marcus and I traveled with Adrian to the Bellamy estate in Winnetka, where breaking glass echoed from the library before we entered. Frederick had knocked a crystal decanter onto the floor, while Margaret watched him with open hostility. Lila stood near the desk, holding the old photograph against her chest.

“My mother is alive, and she contacted me six months ago,” Lila said. “She believes Frederick might be my father, or that the Bellamy family paid her to disappear.”

Margaret answered with visible bitterness.

“Laura returned seventeen years ago while pregnant, and Frederick believed the child might belong to him.”

Frederick looked toward me as panic overcame his anger.

“Laura admitted she was uncertain whether the father was me or Graham Hart.”

The accusation struck so unexpectedly that I immediately called Graham and activated the speaker.

“Laura told me she had chosen Frederick years earlier,” my father explained. “I never forced her to leave Chicago. I purchased a house for her in northern Michigan after she requested protection from Frederick’s threats.”

Marcus received an airport alert before anyone could challenge Graham further. Laura had just arrived at O’Hare International Airport with Elliot Hayes, and surveillance showed them carrying a locked black case marked PROJECT AURORA. Their vehicle was traveling directly toward Hart Global’s headquarters.

We reached the executive conference room shortly after them. Laura, still elegant at forty-nine, showed little resemblance to the frightened woman Frederick had described. Elliot placed the case upon the table and unlocked two metal clasps.

Seventeen years earlier, Hart Global and Bellamy Development had jointly financed Project Aurora, an early technology-infrastructure initiative. Eleven million dollars disappeared through fabricated invoices, shell contractors, and manipulated acquisition payments.

Laura presented spreadsheets identifying the ultimate recipient as Margaret Bellamy. She had secretly controlled a procurement company used to siphon money from both corporate partners.

The historical evidence was only the beginning. Recent banking statements showed that Margaret had also diverted twenty-six million dollars from the current Bellamy technology complex into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.

Adrian stared at his mother.

“You stole from our company for years and allowed Father to believe rising construction costs caused every shortage.”

Laura then explained why she had disappeared. A chief accountant discovered Margaret’s first embezzlement scheme seventeen years earlier, but the brake line on his automobile was deliberately damaged before he could report the records. The resulting crash was staged to resemble an accident, while threats against Laura forced her into hiding.

Elliot began crying before revealing another concealed truth. The man driving that car was his brother, Samuel Hayes, who had exchanged identities with the accountant after learning someone intended to silence him. Samuel survived the planned crash and disappeared under protection because the people pursuing him believed he had perished.

Recent DNA testing established that Samuel, rather than Frederick or Graham, was Lila’s biological father.

“My mother allowed me to believe one of these powerful men abandoned us, while my real father remained hidden for his own safety.”

Laura placed one hand over Lila’s.

“I withheld the truth because Margaret’s accomplices were still searching for Samuel, but secrecy eventually allowed their lies to injure you differently.”

Lila’s relationship with Adrian, her access to Hart Global, and her attempt to expose the financing file had grown from a history she only partially understood. Yet her pain did not excuse the affair or her decision to publicly humiliate me.

Part 5: The Bellamy Empire Collapses

The following morning, FBI agents and Chicago police secured Bellamy Tower while forensic teams collected servers, accounting files, and archived contracts. Margaret was arrested inside her office while holding the downloaded signature page she intended to use for a forged authorization and further leverage against the lending banks.

Victor Lane, a corrupt investment manager who had assisted Margaret since Project Aurora, attempted to leave Illinois with multiple encrypted drives. Federal agents intercepted him at O’Hare before his flight departed.
