From my parked SUV, I saw Margaret cross the lawn while Daniel pried at the basement lock.

She opened her shopping bag and removed industrial rags, rubber gloves, and several bottles of paint thinner.

The 911 dispatcher warned me that responding officers were less than a minute away.

I remained inside the vehicle with Emma.

Two police cruisers arrived first, followed immediately by a fire engine.

Officers ordered Daniel and Margaret to raise their hands and move away from the gasoline.

Daniel dropped the crowbar.

“This is my house! I have every right to be here!”

An officer pointed toward the fuel container.

“Step away from the gasoline, place your hands above your head, and get on your knees.”

Margaret began shouting that Daniel owned the property and that I was attempting to destroy her son.

Daniel claimed the gasoline was for our lawn equipment.

I exaggerated nothing.

Whenever I was uncertain, I said I was uncertain.

That discipline mattered because evidence did not need dramatic language.

It needed accuracy.

By afternoon, investigators had obtained authorization to search the property and preserve potential evidence.

The first discovery concerned the furnace inspection invoice Daniel had shown me.

It was fraudulent.

The service company confirmed the invoice number belonged to an unrelated residence.

Daniel had checked in electronically for his Dallas flight shortly after midnight but never passed through the boarding gate.

He knelt beside the furnace gas connection for several minutes with a wrench in his hand.

The following morning, he had pretended to smell gas and warned me not to enter the basement.

Another discussed what Daniel should do if the furnace failed to produce the intended accident.

A third referred to paying off a second mortgage after everything was finished.

Margaret was not simply a mother defending her son.

She was participating.

What investigators uncovered next explained why.

Daniel earned more than $160,000 annually as a risk analyst, and our regular mortgage payments had never appeared problematic.

However, forensic review showed that he had secretly diverted client investment funds into highly speculative cryptocurrency and derivative trades.

His losses exceeded $600,000.

His employer was preparing an internal audit for the end of the month.

If the activity were discovered, Daniel faced not merely termination but possible federal financial-fraud charges.

Investigators also discovered a $150,000 transfer connected to Margaret.

She had borrowed heavily against her own home to help Daniel cover earlier losses.

He had lost that money too.

Their financial lives were collapsing simultaneously.

The insurance policy offered a horrifying escape route.

If Emma and I died in what appeared to be an accidental household gas explosion, Daniel could potentially claim the insurance proceeds, conceal his immediate financial crisis, and create enough time to cover evidence of his other misconduct.

Two days after Daniel’s arrest, Megan called me.

Her voice sounded wrong.

My blood went cold.

Daniel planned to leave our home around 6:40, be dropped at the airport shortly after seven, return to Aurora by rideshare, and enter the empty house after Emma and I were gone.

He had written instructions involving the heating system and flammable solvent.

Another addressed the possibility that Emma might return home with me.
