“So You’re Rebecca.” The Man Said After He And Three Others Smashed Their Way Into My Café After Closing. I Recognized Him Immediately—Gabriel Kane, The Man Connected To The Kidnapping That Had Been Meant For Me.

Part 2 of 3

I avoided unnecessary conversations.

I did not challenge her.

I watched.

Evelyn received frequent private telephone calls.

She left the estate for hours without explaining where she was going.

Each time she returned, she seemed more anxious.

Once, I heard her spending nearly twenty minutes in the library whispering about money.

She repeatedly used the phrase:

After she comes back.

On the fourth afternoon, a black SUV stopped beyond the estate gates.

A woman stumbled out.

Cassandra.

She was barefoot.

Exhausted.

And still wearing my red Valentino dress.

The fabric was torn and filthy.

She could barely stand.

“Mom, I thought they were never going to let me go.”

Evelyn ran toward her daughter.

Ethan followed.

But then Evelyn noticed me standing near the front entrance.

Her expression shifted from relief to hatred.

“Now you’re going to prison.”

Ethan turned toward me.

“Look at what happened to Cassandra because of you.”

Before I could answer, another vehicle entered the driveway.

Charles stepped out.

He walked into the house without greeting anyone.

Then he took the central chair in the living room.

“Everybody sit down.”

His voice left little room for argument.

I connected my phone to the television.

The recording began playing.

Evelyn’s voice filled the room.

“Rebecca doesn’t matter anymore. We can deal with her later.”

Cassandra stopped crying.

She stared at the screen.

Then she turned toward her mother.

“Mom. That’s your voice.”

I looked at Cassandra.

“The people who kidnapped you were supposed to take me. They mistook you for me because you were wearing my dress.”

Cassandra stared at Evelyn.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Evelyn said nothing.

Charles placed the DNA report on the coffee table.

Ethan picked it up.

As he read, the color drained from his face.

“What is this supposed to mean?”

Charles answered calmly.

“It means we’re repeating the test independently tomorrow. And your mother will explain why a secret from thirty-four years ago became important enough to put Rebecca’s life in danger.”

Evelyn pointed toward me.

“She’s destroying this family!”

Charles did not raise his voice.

“Then you should have no objection to another DNA test.”

Silence filled the room.

Ethan finally looked at me.

“Rebecca, I’m sorry.”

I opened my handbag.

Inside were divorce documents my attorney had prepared that morning.

I placed them in front of him.

“You told me to leave. You said you wanted a divorce before you even allowed me to explain why someone had tried to kidnap me.”

I looked directly at him.

“I’m giving you exactly what you asked for.”

I signed the papers.

At that moment, Charles’s phone rang.

His investigator had traced the ransom money.

Charles listened for a moment.

Then he turned toward Evelyn.

“We know which account funded the payment. And we know who you contacted before Rebecca became the target.”

Evelyn went completely still.

Charles placed another file on the table.

The first name inside it was Gabriel Kane.

PART 3 – THE MAN CONNECTED TO THE ORIGINAL LIE

Ethan looked at the name.

Then he read it again.

“Who is Gabriel Kane?”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

Charles answered.

“Thirty-five years ago, Gabriel Kane worked as a driver for a company where your mother was employed as an executive assistant.”

He paused.

“Later, Kane became involved in extortion, violent debt collection, and organized criminal activity. He has multiple convictions.”

Ethan turned toward Evelyn.

“What does he have to do with me?”

She began crying.

The truth emerged gradually.

Before she married Charles, Evelyn had been romantically involved with Gabriel Kane.

When she met Charles, he was already a successful young financier with considerable wealth and social standing.

Soon afterward, Evelyn became pregnant.

She told Charles the baby was his.

Charles believed her.

He married Evelyn and raised Ethan as his son.

Gabriel eventually disappeared into criminal circles.

Evelyn claimed that she had lost contact with him.

But apparently, she had found him again when she needed someone willing to frighten, abduct, or remove a woman who knew too much.

Ethan’s voice trembled.

“You contacted my biological father to kidnap my wife?”

Evelyn covered her face.

“I only wanted her gone long enough to stop her from destroying everything.”

Cassandra pulled away when Evelyn tried to touch her.

“Those men kidnapped me because of you.”

Evelyn reached toward her.

“Cassie, please. Let me explain.”

Cassandra stepped back.

“Don’t touch me.”

That rejection seemed to wound Evelyn more deeply than Charles’s anger.

Within days, evidence gathered by Charles’s investigators was transferred to state and federal authorities.

A court-authorized DNA test confirmed that Ethan was not Charles’s biological child.

Charles removed Ethan from his executive responsibilities while Hawthorne Capital reviewed its leadership succession.

He also began revising several aspects of his estate plan.

I wanted no part of those decisions.

I had never wanted control over Hawthorne Capital.

I had never wanted Ethan’s inheritance.

I simply wanted distance from the family whose lies had nearly cost me my life.

My divorce moved forward quickly.

Ethan and I had no children, and relatively few assets were disputed.

He called repeatedly.

At first, he tried to explain his behavior.

“I was terrified because Cassandra had disappeared.”

I answered calmly.

“I understand that.”

Then he said:

“My mother manipulated me.”

“I understand that, too.”

Finally, he asked:

“Then why can’t we start again?”

I took a moment before answering.

“Because when I was frightened and begging you to listen, you decided it was easier to accuse me than to believe me.”

He fell silent.

“I can’t build another marriage with someone who requires evidence before offering his own wife basic trust.”

Eventually, I left Connecticut.

I moved to Cape Elizabeth, Maine, where my mother, Diane, had been living for several years.

Using money from my divorce settlement and savings I already possessed, we rented a small building overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

We converted the ground floor into a café.

My mother baked fresh blueberry scones every morning.

I learned how to make espresso properly instead of pretending the automatic coffee machine did all the work.

For six months, life became wonderfully ordinary.

Customers came and went.

Summer visitors stopped for pastries.

Local residents began returning regularly.

And for the first time in a long while, I could imagine living without constantly anticipating another crisis.

Then a black Cadillac Escalade began appearing near the café around closing time.

I noticed it three times over two weeks.

On the fourth occasion, three unfamiliar men entered.

They ordered coffee.

Then they sat watching the room in complete silence.

They left without finishing their drinks.

I called Charles.

He hesitated before answering my questions.

“Gabriel Kane disappeared before federal agents could locate him. Evelyn is still under investigation, and we have reasons to believe she’s been communicating through some of her old associates.”

A cold sensation settled in my stomach.

Charles continued.

“Don’t confront anyone yourself. If those men return, contact the authorities immediately.”

Two nights later, my mother and I were cleaning the café after closing.

Something struck the front window.

The glass shattered across the floor.

Several men entered.

The last man through the doorway had gray hair and a deep scar cutting through one eyebrow.

I recognized his face immediately.

I had seen it in the investigator’s file.

Gabriel Kane.

PART 4 – THE SECOND THREAT

Gabriel looked around our damaged café with the casual arrogance of someone accustomed to frightening people.

His expression suggested he believed fear was something that happened to other people.

“So you’re Rebecca.”

I moved between him and my mother.

“What do you want?”

He smiled.

“Every dollar Charles Hawthorne gave you. All of it. And afterward, you’re going to apologize to Evelyn for what you’ve done to her family.”

Behind me, my mother was trembling.

I was frightened, too.

But months earlier, I had learned that fear was not a reason to surrender control of my life.
