Part 2 of 3

Watching her put down the phone, I saw something change.

For the first time in nearly two years, she wasn’t trying to make Brandon happy.

She was making decisions for herself.

PART 3 — THE JOB HE THOUGHT BELONGED TO HIM

The following Monday, Brandon arrived forty-five minutes late to the offices of Mercer Commercial Supply, apparently expecting the same indulgence he’d received throughout his engagement.

Nathan asked him to explain the absence in writing.

Brandon protested that traffic had delayed him, but his supervisor documented the incident according to company policy.

Three days later, his market-analysis report was incomplete.

Human resources issued a formal warning after reviewing his previous performance deficiencies.

Brandon responded by accusing his coworkers of deliberately making his job more difficult.

“Nobody complained about my work before, and now everybody is suddenly acting as though I’m some incompetent stranger,” he argued in the break room.

A senior sales representative answered without raising his voice.

“We’ve been finishing your reports and covering your clients for months, Brandon, and it’s time you handled the responsibilities in your own job description.”

For the first time, Brandon discovered that the family name he’d expected to inherit through marriage didn’t exempt him from ordinary professional standards.

At home, his mother made matters worse.

Diane had already encouraged Madison to reserve an expensive convertible, while Trevor had begun telling friends about the warehouse management position he expected to receive.

Neither position had ever been offered.

When Brandon explained that the wedding was postponed, Diane became furious.

“You cannot afford to lose Emily now, because our entire future depends on getting that marriage back on schedule.”

Brandon began calling my sister more frequently.

He alternated between romantic promises and demands for reassurance about his promotion.

Emily answered only when necessary, keeping their exchanges brief and refusing to discuss her family’s finances.

Meanwhile, our parents consulted the family attorney regarding the wedding contracts and any financial commitments Emily had made for Brandon.

She canceled the orders and reservations that belonged to her, followed the applicable refund procedures, and ensured he no longer possessed access to anything she controlled.

The larger problem developed at work.

Mercer Commercial Supply was negotiating a nearly $4 million contract to provide specialized structural framing and fire-rated interior materials for a thirty-story commercial development in Austin.

Our engineering department had established strict specifications for the project.

Every quotation required technical review before being released to the general contractor.

Brandon saw the proposed contract as an opportunity to force Dad and Nathan to recognize his supposed abilities.

On Sunday evening, he entered the company’s sales system, retrieved pricing from an unrelated residential project, altered several figures, and sent the document to the Austin contractor as an official quotation.

He bypassed the engineering approval process entirely.

The materials listed in his proposal didn’t satisfy the project’s specified fire-resistance requirements.

Worse, he had represented the quotation as ready for acceptance despite never obtaining authorization.

On Monday morning, the contractor’s project director called my father directly.

“Mr. Mercer, your company sent us residential-grade interior specifications for a thirty-story commercial project, and we need to understand how that happened.”

Dad immediately contacted Nathan.

An internal review identified the account used to send the document and confirmed that no technical approval had been recorded.

Within an hour, Brandon was called into a conference room.

He entered smiling.

“I assume everybody is impressed that I moved the Austin deal forward without waiting through another week of unnecessary meetings.”

Nathan placed the unauthorized quotation on the table.

“Explain why you sent this document without engineering approval and represented it as an official commercial proposal.”

Brandon shrugged.

“The customer wanted a quick response, and most of those material specifications are practically the same anyway.”

Dad looked at him in disbelief.

“Those specifications exist to protect people inside buildings, Brandon, and you cannot substitute residential materials simply because you want to impress a client.”

Brandon accused Nathan of targeting him because Emily had postponed their wedding.

Nathan didn’t engage with the accusation.

Instead, he documented exactly which procedures Brandon had bypassed and the risks his actions created.

The Austin contractor withdrew from negotiations and selected another supplier.

Mercer Commercial Supply lost a major commercial opportunity.

And Brandon had finally provided a clear professional reason for the dismissal he’d never imagined could happen.

PART 4 — THE FOUR-MILLION-DOLLAR MISTAKE

Nathan traveled to Austin with senior engineers to apologize and explain that the unauthorized quotation had been withdrawn.

They reviewed the correct technical requirements and offered to submit a properly approved replacement.

But the contractor had lost confidence in the process.

After considering the risks to its construction schedule, the company ended negotiations and moved forward with a Houston-based supplier.

Dad was devastated by the outcome, not simply because of the lost revenue, but because his company’s reputation had been built on decades of dependable work.

Our family business supplied materials for schools, medical facilities, office buildings, and other projects where technical compliance was essential.

Brandon’s carelessness threatened far more than a quarterly sales target.

That afternoon, the human resources director, Susan Parker, met with Brandon alongside the company’s employment attorney.

She presented the documented performance warnings, unauthorized system activity, communications with the contractor, and the company’s applicable approval requirements.

“Your employment is being terminated for serious violations of company procedures, including submitting an unauthorized commercial quotation that exposed the company to substantial risk,” she explained.

Brandon stared at her.

“You’re firing me because Emily is angry with me, and I’m going to sue this entire family for everything it’s worth.”

Susan remained composed.

“You may seek independent legal advice, but the company’s decision is based on documented workplace conduct and the evidence reviewed during this investigation.”

His final wages were handled under applicable requirements, and security accompanied him while he collected his personal belongings.

By evening, Brandon had returned home without the promotion, the commission, or the job he’d expected to transform his life.

His family reacted badly.

Madison learned that her anticipated corporate position didn’t exist and canceled plans for her expensive car.

Trevor discovered that nobody intended to appoint him warehouse manager.

Diane insisted Brandon persuade Emily to reschedule the wedding immediately.

But my sister had already completed the cancellation arrangements.

She wasn’t going to marry him.

She simply hadn’t told him yet.

The following morning, she sent one message proposing a final conversation at an outdoor café in the Legacy West district of Plano.

She asked me to accompany her.

Brandon accepted almost immediately, apparently convinced that Emily wanted to apologize and repair their relationship.

I knew otherwise.

Emily had spent the previous weeks grieving the loss of a future she’d sincerely wanted.

But she’d also begun recognizing how often she had sacrificed her own comfort to earn affection Brandon never intended to give honestly.

For the meeting, she chose tailored trousers, a soft cream sweater, and comfortable leather loafers.

She didn’t ask anyone whether the outfit made her look taller.

And she didn’t bring the pointed heels Brandon had repeatedly demanded she wear.

PART 5 — THE FINAL CONVERSATION AT THE CAFÉ

Brandon arrived fifteen minutes early, wearing an expensive suit and the confident smile he’d used throughout their engagement.

He barely acknowledged me before looking down at Emily’s shoes.

“Why aren’t you wearing the heels I bought you, Emily, when you know those flats make your height difference more obvious?”
