Yet The $12,380 Worth Of Designer Merchandise He Was Buying For Her Was Being Charged To My Shopping Account. I Looked At My Husband And Asked Him To Pay With His Own Credit Card Instead…

Part 2 of 3

The moment she hugged me, I began crying.

PART 3 — THE CONFESSION THAT CHANGED EIGHTEEN YEARS OF MEMORIES

Olivia listened while I described the private shopping suite, the purchases, and the younger woman’s belief that Brandon and I had already separated.

She encouraged me to preserve the financial records before making any major decisions.

“You don’t have to decide what happens to your marriage tonight. But you need to know exactly what’s been going on.”

Her advice helped me focus.

Brandon and I maintained separate personal accounts alongside our shared household finances.

My interior design business had become increasingly profitable.

His commercial sales income fluctuated according to commissions.

Over the previous few years, I had paid a larger share of our household expenses because Brandon claimed his industry was struggling.

I had accepted that explanation without question.

At 8:40 that evening, Brandon returned.

He stopped when he saw the statements covering the kitchen table.

“I know today was terrible, Caroline, but we need to discuss this calmly instead of making everything worse.”

I pointed toward the chair opposite mine.

“Then sit down and tell me the truth. I’m finished listening to explanations designed to protect you.”

He sat reluctantly.

For several minutes, he avoided answering directly.

Finally, he admitted having an affair.

Her name was Madison Brooks.

They had met through a mutual acquaintance at a professional event.

I looked at him.

“How long have you been seeing Madison?”

He hesitated.

“Approximately eleven months. I never expected it to continue this long.”

Eleven months.

Nearly a year of holidays, birthdays, ordinary meals, and evenings when I waited for him to return.

He acknowledged telling Madison that our marriage was effectively over.

His explanation was that we had become emotionally distant.

“We weren’t separated, Brandon. We were living together, sharing a bedroom, making plans, and celebrating our anniversary.”

He claimed the relationship had become complicated.

I reminded him that marital difficulties did not justify secret affairs.

Then I showed him the handbag purchased two days after our anniversary dinner.

“You sent me flowers, promised you would choose me again, and then bought another woman a gift using my account.”

He looked down.

“Please don’t reinterpret every good memory because of this.”

I shook my head.

“I’m not changing our history. Your decisions already changed what those memories mean.”

Eventually, he described the affair as a terrible mistake.

“Eleven months involve hundreds of choices. You had hundreds of opportunities to stop.”

He insisted that he still loved me.

For the first time, my anger overwhelmed my composure.

“If you loved me throughout those eleven months, what exactly did that love stop you from doing?”

Brandon could not answer.

I gathered the statements.

Then I told him I would sleep in the guest room.

That night, I remained awake until dawn.

I kept remembering Madison’s confusion when she discovered I was still his wife.

I wondered how many lies Brandon had told her.

More importantly, I wondered how many he had told me.

PART 4 — TWO WOMEN LIVING INSIDE THE SAME MAN’S LIES

The following morning, Brandon prepared breakfast.

He placed scrambled eggs and coffee on the kitchen island as though restoring our routine might somehow repair what had happened.

“Can we please talk without behaving like strangers? I don’t want to lose everything we’ve built.”

I walked past the food.

“I’m trying to understand who you really are, Brandon, because the man I believed I married wouldn’t have done this.”

Later, Margaret called.

The pending $7,760 had been canceled or released.

The previously charged $4,620 would be reviewed according to the store’s return policies.

She had also arranged a detailed history of transactions made using Brandon’s authorization.

Then she mentioned that my altered navy coat was still ready for collection.

That ordinary reminder nearly made me cry.

I had entered Ashford & Co. for a coat.

Instead, I discovered the collapse of my marriage.

Olivia helped me arrange a consultation with family-law attorney Diane Prescott.

Diane asked detailed questions about our house, accounts, business ownership, and marital property.

She explained that financial separation after eighteen years required careful documentation.

“Protect your accounts and preserve the evidence, but don’t empty shared funds or assume every questionable transaction will automatically be reimbursed.”

Her practical approach reassured me.

Before I left, she asked what I wanted.

For a while, I could not answer.

Then I spoke.

“I want my husband back. But I’m beginning to wonder whether the man I want ever existed the way I believed.”

Diane encouraged me not to rush my decision.

When I returned home, Brandon had placed white tulips on the dining table.

He said he wanted to make me feel better.

I stared at them.

“You gave me white tulips for our anniversary. Two days later, you bought Madison a handbag.”

His expression fell.

“I wasn’t thinking about that when I bought these. I genuinely wanted to do something kind.”

But that was precisely the problem.

He wanted familiar gestures to carry their old meanings while pretending his secrets had not changed them.

The following morning, Madison emailed me.

She apologized for contacting me directly.

Then she explained that Brandon had repeatedly described our marriage as effectively finished.

He told her we were still sharing a house only because dividing property and my business finances would take time.

Madison admitted overlooking warning signs because his explanations seemed convincing.

She also confirmed that she had ended their relationship immediately after the confrontation at Ashford & Co.

I read the email several times.

Madison believed she was dating a separated man.

I believed I was married to a faithful husband.

Brandon had created two realities and moved between them whenever it suited him.

When I confronted him with Madison’s message, he attempted to dismiss her words as emotional exaggeration.

But his reaction confirmed the essential facts.

I told him to move into the guest bedroom while I considered our future.

For once, I did not comfort him when he looked disappointed.

PART 5 — THE ORDINARY THINGS I STOPPED DOING FOR HIM

The first changes in our household were almost invisible.

I stopped preparing Brandon’s morning coffee.

For eighteen years, I had known exactly how much milk he preferred and which chipped ceramic mug he liked best.

I no longer kept dinner warm when he worked late.

I stopped arranging his dry cleaning, reminding him about family birthdays, and adjusting my appointments around his schedule.

I was not trying to punish him.

I simply could not continue devoting my energy to someone who had exploited my trust.

Initially, Brandon treated these changes as temporary anger.

He suggested ordering dinner, watching movies, and taking a weekend trip somewhere quiet.

“Maybe a few days alone would help us remember why we fell in love.”

I remembered asking him for similar weekends months earlier.

“A vacation won’t erase eleven months of dishonesty. The distance between us didn’t appear by accident.”

He complained that he was trying to repair things.

“I can see you’re trying now. But I didn’t create the damage you’re asking me to overcome.”

Meanwhile, additional financial records arrived.

I identified approximately $9,000 in earlier purchases that I could not connect to anything I had authorized or received.

I preserved the records and requested appropriate reviews.

I understood that recovering every dollar might not be possible.

But the emotional harm exceeded the financial loss.

Brandon had relied on my trust to conceal his spending.

One Sunday, his mother called.

Eleanor Mitchell was seventy-four and had retired from teaching elementary school.

She had been part of my life since I was twenty-eight.

When she invited us to dinner, I hesitated.

Eleanor immediately sensed something was wrong.

I told her about the affair.

For several moments, she remained silent.

Then she spoke.

“Caroline, I love my son, but I didn’t raise him to treat his wife with such selfishness and dishonesty.”

She assured me she would respect whatever decision I made.

Her acknowledgment brought unexpected relief.

A week later, Madison requested a meeting.

I initially declined.

Eventually, I decided hearing her perspective might answer questions Brandon continued avoiding.

We met in a quiet café.

Madison wore jeans and a cream sweater.

She looked much less confident than she had in the shopping suite.

She repeated that Brandon had described our marriage as over.

“He said you were emotionally finished and only living together because of financial complications.”

I explained that we had shared a bedroom until the night I discovered the affair.

Madison looked horrified.

Then she admitted that Brandon often described me as a successful businesswoman who neglected him emotionally.

“He made it sound like he was lonely because you were always focused on your company.”
