“Can we just have your leftovers?” The homeless child asked. The woman looked up and dropped her glass in sh0ck…

Part 1 of 2

The soft music inside Maison du Parc, an upscale restaurant in Boston, mingled with the quiet murmur of conversation and the gentle clink of crystal. Outside, the late afternoon light glowed against glass walls. Inside, coats of velvet and silk shimmered under chandeliers.

At a corner table, Helena Raye stirred her tea without drinking it. Once known as one of the city’s most influential architects, she now looked distant, her thoughts miles away. Success had never felt so heavy.

Then a small voice interrupted the calm.

“Excuse me… could we have what you didn’t finish?”

The room fell silent. Heads turned toward the entrance where two children stood. Their clothes were torn, their faces pale from cold. The older boy held his brother’s hand protectively, his eyes defiant though his body trembled.

Helena looked up—and her hand slipped. Her teacup shattered on the floor.

The boy’s face. The curve of his mouth. The small scar above his left eyebrow.

Her breath caught. “Ryan?”

He froze. “Who are you?”

“I… I’m your mother.” Her voice cracked.

The younger boy tugged his sleeve. “Come on, she’s lying.”

Ryan stared, uncertain. “My mom’s gone. They said she died.”

Helena reached into her purse, pulling out a photograph: a small child laughing on a carousel, sunlight on his hair. Her fingers shook. “I kept this with me every day.”

Ryan’s eyes widened. For a long moment, he said nothing. “We ran away. The home was… bad. We didn’t know where to go.”

Helena felt the room disappear around her. She knelt before him. “Come with me. Just tonight. Please.”

He hesitated, then nodded.

As they turned toward the door, a tall man stepped into their path. His expression was cold, his suit pressed sharp as a blade.

“Ryan. Simon. You weren’t supposed to leave.”

Helena straightened. “Who are you?”

He smiled thinly. “Their guardian. Malcolm Trent. From the state home.”

The name chilled her.

In the car, silence pressed against the windows. Trent sat stiff beside the driver, his gaze unblinking. The boys clung together in the back. Helena watched them through the mirror, her mind racing.

At her apartment, she guided them inside. The penthouse glittered with city lights, but the boys stood near the door, uncertain, out of place among glass and silver.

Trent spoke first. “Mrs. Raye, these children are wards of the state. Ryan was listed as deceased. You have no legal claim.”
