Hidden Moral Stories

At 2:13 A.M., My Five-Year-Old Whispered, “There Are Silver Fish Swimming Inside Me”—Doctors Found 36 Magnets, My Husband Looked at Me Like I Was Responsible, but the Moment I Mentioned Our Dining-Room Camera, Someone Else’s Face Suddenly Changed…

Part 2 of 3

“It would be highly unusual. Their taste is unpleasant, and a child would probably resist after the first few. We believe she was repeatedly persuaded by someone she trusted.”

Scott lowered his eyes. Judith suddenly became very still.

As I watched her, a memory surfaced: the small security camera I had installed after packages began disappearing from our porch. A wide-angle lens inside the adjoining living room covered part of the dining area, including the table where Maisie had spent the previous afternoon coloring.

Judith noticed the change in my face.

And for the first time, I saw fear in hers.

What the Camera Remembered

“I need to go home,” I said.

Judith immediately turned toward me.

“Your daughter just came out of surgery, and you’re thinking about leaving?”

“Only long enough to retrieve a recording.”

Scott stepped in front of the elevator.

“You’re not entering that house alone. If there’s evidence, no one should be able to alter it.”

That sentence settled something inside me. He was no longer speaking to me as his wife or as the mother who had carried our daughter through the night. He was speaking to me as a suspect.

I called Detective Bennett and explained about the camera. Less than twenty minutes later, she and another officer escorted all three of us to the house. No one was permitted to enter ahead of them.

Inside, Maisie’s tiny white sneakers remained beside the sofa. A blue crayon lay on the rug, and her unfinished drawing waited on the dining table. The sight of those ordinary objects nearly broke my composure.

I opened the camera application on my laptop and found the previous afternoon’s recording. Judith stood near the kitchen entrance with both hands tightly clasped.

“That old camera barely works,” she muttered.

The recording loaded clearly.

On the screen, Maisie sat coloring a school of blue and green fish. I appeared briefly in the background carrying a laundry basket upstairs. Two minutes later, Judith entered the dining room and removed a small glass container from her purse.

“What are those?” Maisie asked.

“Mermaid eggs,” Judith answered in a playful voice. “They’re magical.”

“Can I eat them?”

“Of course. But this has to be our secret.”

The objects were tiny, polished, and silver. Judith placed one in Maisie’s hand and encouraged her to swallow it. When Maisie made a face and tried to refuse another, Judith praised her for being brave and promised that the “eggs” would turn into friendly fish.

Afterward, she wiped the table and leaned close to my daughter.

“Don’t tell your mother. She’ll be angry if she finds out you accepted a secret treat.”

Detective Bennett stopped the recording.

“How many did you give her?”

Judith’s restraint vanished.

“I didn’t realize all thirty-six would cause such a serious problem.”

No one had mentioned the exact number since leaving the hospital.

Scott turned slowly toward his mother.

“How did you know there were thirty-six?”

Judith covered her mouth, but the answer had already escaped. Officers recovered the empty container and a store receipt from her purse. A message visible on her phone’s notification screen offered the rest of the explanation: she had written to her sister that Maisie’s illness would finally provide Scott with a reason to seek sole custody.

Judith began insisting that she had acted for her son.

“Allison was pushing me out of this family,” she cried. “You hardly needed me anymore. I thought Maisie would have a stomachache, and everyone would finally see that Allison wasn’t watching her properly.”

Scott stared at her as if the woman before him were someone he had never met.

“You used my daughter to frame my wife.”

“I was protecting you.”

“No,” I said quietly. “You were trying to make yourself necessary.”

The officers escorted Judith away while another investigator secured the laptop and recording. Scott stood in the dining room surrounded by family photographs, looking smaller than I had ever seen him.
