At My Best Friend’s Wedding, the Woman I Had Never Stopped Loving Walked In Carrying 15-Month-Old Twins With My Gray Eyes. “I Sent Nine Letters and Came to Your Home Twice,” She Told Me—but Someone Had Silenced Every Attempt to Reach Me. When My Mother Whispered, “I Was Protecting You,” Our Family Attorney Stepped Forward With a 28-Year-Old Envelope…

Part 3 of 3

“I knew you were determined to keep yourself connected to this family.”

Alexander moved between them.

“You had her blocked from my home.”

“I protected you from further manipulation.”

“You intercepted her letters.”

Eleanor remained silent.

“You changed my email filters and arranged those photographs outside the clinic.”

A slight movement crossed Eleanor’s face, so small that most people would have missed it. Alexander did not.

“She was never suited to your responsibilities,” Eleanor replied. “You were about to make a lifelong decision based on emotion.”

“So you made it for me.”

“I did what your father would have expected.”

Alexander stared at the woman who had directed every part of his life since childhood. For years, he had confused control with devotion because it came wrapped in polished manners and family duty. Standing beside Katherine, he finally recognized the difference.

“You kept me from my children.”

“I kept two children from becoming tools in someone else’s hands.”

Katherine’s eyes filled, but her voice remained steady.

“I refused your money. I never wanted his company or his family name. I wanted him to listen to me.”

Alexander looked at her, remembering the evening she had waited beside the door, giving him one final chance to call her back. He had failed then, and no explanation could erase that failure.

He faced Eleanor again.

“Effective tomorrow morning, you will no longer serve as chairwoman of the Pierce Foundation or hold a seat on my company’s board.”

For the first time, Eleanor appeared uncertain.

“You cannot remove me.”

“I hold the controlling shares, and the limitations in Grandfather’s trust expired last month.”

She turned toward Wallace.

“Tell him he cannot do this.”

The attorney did not answer.

The Secret Inside the Envelope

Wallace Brant had advised the Pierce family for more than thirty years. Alexander remembered him attending holiday dinners, teaching him chess, and guiding him through his first major acquisition. Now the older man stood beside Eleanor with his shoulders lowered and his eyes fixed on the marble floor.

Alexander noticed his silence.

“What aren’t you telling me?”

Eleanor turned sharply.

“Wallace, this matter does not concern you.”

The attorney removed his glasses.

“I’m afraid it concerns me more than anyone here realizes.”

Eleanor reached for his arm, but he stepped away.

Alexander’s voice became quieter.

“What did you do?”

Wallace looked toward Katherine.

“I redirected the letters. I instructed the security staff to refuse her entry, approved the changes to your private email, and arranged payment for the photographer.”

Katherine covered her mouth. Alexander stood motionless, struggling to reconcile the confession with the man he had trusted since childhood.

“Why?”

“Your mother asked me.”

“That explains the request, not your obedience.”

Wallace reached inside his jacket and removed a weathered envelope. Its edges had softened with age, and Alexander’s name was written across the front in faded ink.

Eleanor’s composure finally broke.

“Put that away.”

Wallace did not look at her.

“Twenty-eight years ago, I promised Eleanor I would protect a secret concerning your family. When she asked me to separate you from Katherine, she reminded me what would happen if the truth became public.”

Alexander stared at the envelope.

“What truth?”

Wallace extended it toward him.

“The truth about the man whose name should have appeared on your birth certificate.”

No one spoke.

Alexander accepted the envelope, surprised that something so light could make the solid ballroom beneath him seem uncertain. Katherine reached for his arm instinctively, and although the contact lasted only a moment, it reminded him that he was no longer standing entirely alone.

Behind them, the library doors opened. Lydia emerged carrying Theodore, while Lillian walked unsteadily beside Owen, one small hand wrapped around his finger.

The little girl noticed Alexander and raised both arms toward him.

“Da,” she said, offering a single, innocent syllable.

It might have meant nothing, yet Alexander’s eyes filled as he looked from his daughter to the unopened letter in his hand.

He had entered the wedding believing Katherine and the empty chair beside him were the greatest reminders of what he had lost. Now two children were reaching toward him, the woman he had once refused to believe was standing at his side, and a decades-old envelope promised to change the story of his own identity.

Eleanor whispered his name, but Alexander did not look at her.

For the first time in his life, he understood that family was not defined by wealth, reputation, or the careful preservation of an old surname. It was defined by who told the truth, who remained when life became difficult, and who reached for you even when you had done little to deserve it.

With Lillian still holding out her hands, Alexander slowly opened the envelope.
