At My Son’s Wedding, My New Daughter-in-Law Publicly Humiliated Me by “Generously” Offering Me Her Old Apartment—Moments Later, I Discovered Her Entire Family Had Already Arrived With Moving Trucks to Take Over the Estate My Late Husband Left Me… With My Own Son’s Permission. I Made One Phone Call, and None of Them Ever Saw What Came Next

Part 2 of 3

Every head in the ballroom turned toward Grant.

Lydia’s voice remained steady.

“How did they get those keys?”

Grant rubbed a hand over his face.

“I copied them.”

Meredith stood abruptly.

“You copied your mother’s keys without telling her?”

Grant’s face reddened.

“I borrowed them during the rehearsal dinner. I thought it would make things easier.”

Lydia stared at him.

“Easier for whom?”

“For everyone.”

“No, Grant. It was easier for you because you did not want to hear me say no.”

He lowered his head.

From the phone came the distant sound of someone shouting near the gate.

Calvin spoke again.

“Mr. Bellamy is insisting that the guest residence was promised to him.”

A man’s voice became audible in the background.

“Tell that woman her son already approved it! We’re not driving back to Charlotte with three trucks!”

Several guests covered their mouths.

Paige rushed forward.

“Give me the phone. My father is upset because this was supposed to be handled before the reception.”

Lydia kept the phone.

“Calvin, no one enters the property. Record the vehicles, the boxes, and every attempt to access the gate. Contact the local property officers and our attorney.”

Grant reached for her arm, but stopped before touching her.

“Mom, it’s my wedding day.”

Lydia looked at him with quiet sadness.

“And you chose your wedding day because you believed I would be too embarrassed to defend myself.”

What the Boxes Revealed

Within minutes, photographs began arriving on Lydia’s phone.

She opened the first image.

Several boxes had been stacked beside one of the moving trucks. Most were labeled with room names.

“Guest Kitchen.”

“Family Room.”

“Brooke’s Bedroom.”

Then Lydia saw another label.

“Douglas’s Office—Main House.”

Her heart tightened.

Warren’s office was in the main house.

It remained almost exactly as he had left it before his final illness: his books, his drafting table, his old fountain pen, and the framed photograph of Lydia holding Grant as a newborn.

Lydia turned the phone toward her son.

“Were Paige’s parents moving into the guest residence?”

Grant read the label.

His expression changed.

“That wasn’t part of our agreement.”

Paige stepped between them.

“My father probably assumed he could use an empty office.”

“It is not empty,” Lydia replied.

She swiped to the next photograph.

A box was marked “Lydia’s Papers.”

Another said “Storage From Main Bedroom.”

Grant looked at Paige.

“Why are they labeling Mom’s rooms?”

Paige’s voice became sharper.

“Because eventually some areas need to be reorganized. Your mother cannot keep every room frozen in time forever.”

Lydia felt the insult, but she did not allow it to control her.

“My husband’s belongings are not clutter for your family to reorganize.”

Paige lifted her chin.

“Warren has been gone for six years. At some point, everyone has to move forward.”

Grant stared at his wife.

For the first time, he seemed to hear the coldness Lydia had heard from the beginning.

“You told me your parents needed temporary housing,” he said.

“They do.”

“Then why did your father bring an office desk and boxes for my mother’s bedroom?”

Paige did not answer.

Another message arrived from Calvin.

He had photographed a printed floor plan found inside one of the vehicles. Several rooms had been circled and assigned to members of the Bellamy family.

The guest residence was only the beginning.

The Plan Behind the Wedding

The truth became impossible to ignore.

Paige’s parents had not planned to stay for a few weeks.

They intended to settle permanently into Hawthorne Ridge, using Grant’s relationship with Lydia as their protection.

Lydia called her attorney, Naomi Vance.

Naomi answered immediately.

After hearing the situation, she said, “Do not enter into any informal agreement tonight. I will issue written notice that no one has permission to occupy, store property at, or access Hawthorne Ridge without your signed approval.”

“I also want every lock and entry code changed before morning,” Lydia replied.

Grant stepped closer.

“Mom, can we please slow down?”

“Your in-laws are standing outside my gate with furniture for my private rooms. Slowing down would only help them.”

Paige suddenly raised her voice.

“You are humiliating my family in front of everyone!”

Lydia turned toward her.

“Your family is not being humiliated by my refusal. They are being exposed by their own choices.”

Paige’s expression hardened.

“You never wanted me in this family.”

“That is not true. I welcomed you, included you, and treated your parents with respect. But respect does not require me to surrender my home.”

Grant looked from his mother to his bride.

“Did you know about the floor plan?”

Paige remained silent.

“Paige, answer me.”

“My parents wanted to understand the space.”

“They assigned themselves rooms in my mother’s house.”

“Because you told me she would eventually accept it.”

Grant stepped back as though the words had struck him.

Lydia understood then that her son had betrayed her, but he had also been manipulated by his desire to avoid conflict.

That did not excuse him.

Yet it explained why he looked so lost.

The Reception That Never Recovered

The music had stopped completely.

The cake remained untouched.

Guests whispered across the tables while the wedding photographer stood uncertainly near the dance floor.

Paige’s phone began ringing repeatedly.

She ignored the first call, then the second.

On the third, she answered.

Her father’s voice was loud enough for those nearby to hear.

“The officers are here. Tell Grant to fix this right now.”

Paige turned toward him.

“Grant, please tell your mother to let them through.”

Grant stared at Lydia.

For several painful seconds, she wondered which choice he would make.

Then he looked at Paige.

“No.”

Paige blinked.

“What did you say?”

“I said no. Your parents were supposed to stay in the guest residence temporarily. They were never supposed to take over my mother’s home.”
