Avoid these 10 things before an gynecologist appointment

Part 2 of 2

5. Don’t rely on Google — talk to your doctor

We get it. When something feels off, it’s tempting to spend hours online diagnosing yourself.

But too much Googling can cause unnecessary panic — and misinformation. Let your gynecologist guide the conversation. That’s what they’re trained for.

6. Write down your questions in advance

You’d be surprised how many women forget to ask the things they came in for.

If you’ve been wondering about birth control options, period pain, discharge, or anything else — jot your questions down before your appointment. It’s normal to get flustered or nervous. A quick list can help you feel more in control.

7. The exam chair isn’t as scary as it looks

We know — it looks like a medieval torture device. But it’s just a tool to help your doctor do their job.

Try to relax and slide forward when asked. It helps your doctor get a better look and makes the whole process quicker and more comfortable.

8. You don’t always need a pelvic exam at your first visit

If you’re young or it’s your first-ever appointment, you may not need a full pelvic exam.

You can start with a simple consultation — talking about periods, birth control, or questions you have. If you feel anxious, consider bringing a friend or family member for support.

9. Forgotten tampons happen — don’t panic

It’s more common than you think: someone forgets a tampon for a few days and comes in worried about a smell or irritation.

Good news? It’s an easy fix. Just let your doctor know — they won’t judge you.

10. Your gynecologist isn’t here to shame or embarrass you

Their job is to protect your health — not to critique your grooming habits, weight, relationship status, or anything else.

You deserve care and respect in that room. If your doctor doesn’t make you feel safe or listened to, it’s perfectly okay to find another one.
