Part 2 of 3

He stopped walking.

His gaze moved from one face to another.

“Who are they?”

“Hudson, Wyatt, Lila, and June,” I answered. “Your children.”

Brent’s expression hardened.

“That’s impossible.”

“You received the ultrasound reports, Brent.”

“I thought you were trying to get my attention.”

“You could have called the doctor. You could have asked for confirmation. You chose not to.”

Several guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Diane gripped the edge of a nearby table.

“Brent, perhaps we should discuss this privately.”

But Hudson had already stepped forward.

He looked up at Brent with an expression so open and hopeful that my chest tightened.

“Are you our dad?”

Brent opened his mouth, then closed it again.

Hudson waited.

“Mom told us your name. She said we could meet you if we wanted.”

For the first time since I had known Brent, he seemed unable to find an answer.

Then a beautiful blonde woman appeared beside him.

She wore an elegant champagne-colored evening gown and a diamond engagement ring.

“Brent? What’s going on?”

He reached for her hand.

“Sloane, this is my ex-wife.”

She looked at the children.

“And these are…?”

“Our four children,” I answered.

Sloane stared at him.

“Brent, you told me Camille couldn’t have children.”

The room became quiet again.

I felt my stomach tighten.

“He told you what?”

Sloane’s face lost its color.

“He said you were pregnant once, but that you lost the baby. He said you never recovered from it.”

I looked directly at Brent.

For nearly nine years, I had believed his greatest failure was refusing to acknowledge our children.

Now I understood he had built an entirely different story around their existence.

The Lie That Changed Everything

“You told people our children were gone?” I asked.

Brent lowered his voice.

“Camille, please. Not in front of everyone.”

“You invited me here, Brent. You wanted everyone to see how your life turned out. Now they’re seeing something you left out.”

Sloane stepped away from him.

“You told me she kept contacting you because she couldn’t accept the divorce.”

I shook my head.

“I contacted him about the pregnancy and the children. I stopped trying to reach him years ago.”

Sloane looked devastated.

“Why would you tell me something like that?”

Brent rubbed his forehead.

“I didn’t know what to believe back then.”

A deep voice interrupted him.

“You had eight years to find out.”

Walter Holloway stood near the staircase.

Brent’s father had always been a reserved man, more interested in business than family arguments.

But now he looked genuinely shaken.

“Did Camille tell you about these children?”

Brent hesitated.

“She sent me some emails.”

“And did you ever respond?”

“I thought she was trying to make me come back.”

Walter looked toward my children.

“Four children, Brent. Four grandchildren I never knew I had.”

Behind me, June began to cry.

I immediately knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, look at me. Nothing happening here changes how loved you are.”

She wrapped her arms around my neck.

“Did we do something wrong?”

“Absolutely not.”

I stood and addressed the adults.

“We’re not continuing this conversation in front of the children.”

Walter quietly asked the housekeeper to prepare the family sitting room.

Within minutes, the children were drinking hot chocolate and watching a Christmas movie, with a trusted family assistant nearby.

I stayed until they were comfortable.

Only then did I return to the adults.

The Family Trust

Walter was waiting in his study with Brent, Diane, and Sloane.

The festive atmosphere had disappeared.

“There’s something I need to ask you, Brent,” Walter began.

He explained that his late father had established a family trust intended to preserve assets and provide educational benefits for future generations.

The trust required beneficiaries to disclose their children and other qualifying descendants.

Six months earlier, Brent had signed an updated family declaration.

He had reported having no children.

“You certified that statement,” Walter said. “You understood what it meant.”

Brent looked uncomfortable.

“I didn’t believe the children were mine.”

“Then why didn’t you request a paternity test?”

Brent said nothing.

Walter turned to me.

“Camille, do you still have the correspondence you sent him?”

“Every email. Every medical report. I also have the children’s birth certificates.”

I showed him the records stored securely on my phone.

He read the dates carefully.

“These were sent years ago.”

“Yes.”

Sloane slowly removed her engagement ring.

“I can’t marry someone who hid four children and then lied to me about what happened to them.”

Brent reached toward her.

“Sloane, I can explain.”

She stepped back.

“You have been explaining all evening. Every explanation makes things worse.”

Then Walter received a copy of the trust declaration from his attorney’s secure document system.

He opened the file on his tablet.

After several moments, his expression changed.

“Camille, there’s another document attached.”

A Signature That Wasn’t Mine

Walter turned the tablet toward me.

The document appeared to acknowledge that I had received information about the trust and accepted a proposed financial arrangement concerning my children.

At the bottom was my full name.

Camille Whitaker.

Beneath it was a signature.

It resembled mine, but I knew immediately that something was wrong.

“I never signed this.”

Walter looked up.

“Are you certain?”

“Completely. I have never been presented with this agreement.”

The document did not, by itself, eliminate the children’s possible rights under the trust. But it could have been used to misrepresent what I knew and whether I had agreed to certain arrangements.

Walter scrolled down.

“There’s a witness listed.”

Sloane leaned closer to read the name.

Her expression changed.

“Diane Holloway.”

I turned toward my former mother-in-law.

Diane had gone unusually still.

“Diane,” Walter asked, “why is your name on this document?”

She looked toward Brent.

“We should discuss this after Christmas.”

“No,” Walter replied. “We need to understand why Camille’s signature appears on a document she says she never signed.”

Diane clasped her hands together.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

I felt an unexpected sadness.

“Protect the family from what? Four children who had never asked you for anything?”

She couldn’t meet my eyes.

Walter immediately contacted the family’s attorney and requested that the disputed document be preserved for independent review.
