The Grateful Father Offered to Triple Her Salary, but the Moment He Saw Her Last Name, His Face Went Pale. Her Brother Was Linked to $50,000 Missing From His Company—and the Secret Behind That Money Led Straight to His Late Wife’s Final Days

Part 1 of 3

For fourteen days, a wealthy businessman in Boston had watched his premature newborn struggle to settle, even with an entire medical team caring for him. Then a young nurse stepped into the room, lowered the lights, and held the little boy close. Within minutes, the baby was finally sleeping peacefully.

The father offered her three times her salary to stay.

But when he noticed the name on her hospital badge, his expression changed.

“Your brother took $50,000 from my company.”

The nurse went pale. She had no idea that the money was connected to the final days of his wife’s life—or that a secret buried for more than twenty years was about to bring their families together.

The Nurse Who Had Almost Nothing Left

My name is Natalie Prescott, and I was twenty-seven when my life changed inside a private neonatal room at a Boston hospital.

I had been a nurse for six years. I loved caring for babies, especially the smallest ones who needed extra attention before they were ready to go home.

But outside the hospital, my own life was falling apart.

My mother, Evelyn, had a serious kidney condition. Her treatment was expensive, and even with insurance, the bills kept growing.

My younger brother, Colin Prescott, had recently lost his job with a transportation company. He had become distant, stopped answering calls, and refused to explain why he was constantly worried.

I was working extra shifts to keep our family afloat.

That Tuesday evening, my supervisor approached me.

“Natalie, I need you to cover the private neonatal suite tonight.”

I knew exactly which room she meant.

It belonged to Adrian Westbrook, a forty-four-year-old billionaire whose business interests stretched across real estate, shipping, hotels, and financial services.

Two weeks earlier, Adrian’s wife, Vivienne, had lost her life following a frightening incident involving her vehicle.

Their son, Oliver, had been delivered prematurely and was receiving specialized medical care.

The little boy had survived an incredibly difficult beginning, but he remained unsettled. His father had barely left the hospital.

“I’ll take the shift,” I said.

My supervisor looked relieved.

“Just be patient with Mr. Westbrook. He’s going through something none of us would wish on anyone.”

I nodded, unaware that I was about to become part of his family’s unfinished story.

The Baby Who Finally Felt Safe

When I entered the room, Oliver was crying inside his incubator.

Several medical professionals were discussing his condition while Adrian stood nearby, looking exhausted.

His expensive navy suit was wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed his eyes.

“There has to be something else you can do,” he said.

One doctor answered gently.

“His latest examinations are reassuring, Mr. Westbrook. We are continuing to monitor him closely.”

Adrian shook his head.

“Then why can’t he rest?”

I approached the incubator and observed Oliver.

He was medically stable enough for supervised skin-to-skin care, according to his chart, but the busy environment seemed to be making him uncomfortable.

“Would you mind if we made the room a little quieter?” I asked.

Adrian turned toward me.

“And you are?”

“Natalie Prescott. I’m Oliver’s nurse tonight.”

He looked doubtful.

“We’ve had specialists here every day. What exactly are you suggesting?”

“I’d like to reduce the stimulation and try holding him, with the doctor’s approval.”

The attending physician agreed.

After preparing everything carefully, I settled into a chair and positioned Oliver safely against my chest.

At first, he continued crying.

I gently supported his tiny body and began humming a familiar lullaby.

Gradually, his breathing became calmer.

His fingers relaxed.

A little later, his eyes closed.

Adrian moved closer, hardly believing what he was seeing.

“He’s sleeping?”

I smiled.

“Yes. He seems comfortable now.”

Adrian stared at his son for several seconds.

Then he sat down.

“I haven’t seen him this peaceful since he was born.”

His voice trembled.

“I thought I was failing him.”

I looked at the exhausted father.

“Your son has been through a lot, and so have you. He needs time, consistent care, and the comfort of knowing someone is close.”

Adrian lowered his head.

For the first time, I saw the man behind the fortune.

He was simply a father who missed his wife and wanted his baby to be okay.

A Name That Changed Everything

An hour later, Adrian approached me with an unexpected proposal.

“I want you to become Oliver’s dedicated nurse while he recovers. I’ll arrange a proper contract and triple your current salary.”

I hesitated.

The offer could change everything for my mother.

But I knew my brother had once worked for a company belonging to the Westbrook organization.

“I appreciate that, Mr. Westbrook, but I need to consider my hospital responsibilities.”

“We’ll work around them.”

He glanced at my badge.

His expression suddenly tightened.

“Prescott?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

“Is Colin Prescott your brother?”

My heart began racing.

“He is. Why?”

Adrian reached for his phone.

“Colin worked for one of my transportation subsidiaries. Fifty thousand dollars disappeared from an account connected to his department.”

I stared at him.

“Colin told me he was having financial problems, but he never mentioned anything like that.”

Adrian studied me.

“You genuinely didn’t know?”

“No. And I want to understand what happened.”

Before he could respond, his phone received a message from his company’s financial investigator.

Adrian read it twice.

Then he looked at me.

“Your brother didn’t use the money for himself.”

“Then where did it go?”

His voice became unusually quiet.

“He paid a former employee for information about what happened to Vivienne.”

I looked down at Oliver, sleeping peacefully in my arms.

My brother had somehow become connected to the biggest tragedy in Adrian Westbrook’s life.

And neither of us understood why.

The Questions Vivienne Had Been Asking

The following morning, Adrian introduced me to his family’s legal adviser, Beatrice Bellamy.

She was a composed woman in her late fifties who had worked with the Westbrook family for decades.

When Adrian mentioned Colin, her expression changed.

“I think there are things we need to discuss privately,” she said.

Adrian shook his head.

“Natalie deserves to hear them. Her brother is involved.”

Beatrice opened a folder.

She explained that Vivienne had been reviewing irregularities in the family’s charitable transportation accounts before her passing.
