Then His Mother Revealed Their Real Plan: Use the Marriage to Gain Access to Our Father’s Million-Dollar Business. I Secretly Recorded All 11 Minutes. Weeks Later, He Came Begging My Sister to Save His Career—But When I Pressed Play, His Face Went Pale…

Part 2 of 3

By Monday morning, everything had gone wrong.

The proposal included materials unsuitable for the buildings’ preservation requirements, and the quoted price couldn’t realistically cover the work.

The client was furious.

My father called an emergency meeting.

Spencer arrived smiling.

“I assume you’ve seen that I got the proposal moving,” he said confidently.

Everett placed the document on the table.

“We have. We also know you sent it without authorization.”

Spencer’s expression changed.

He tried to explain that he had wanted to move faster than the competition.

Then he blamed the technical department for not providing information quickly enough.

But Everett had the emails proving Spencer had been specifically instructed to wait.

During the meeting, another message arrived.

The hotel company had decided to end negotiations and hire a different contractor.

Spencer had cost the company a valuable business opportunity.

For the first time, he realized his future might not be as secure as he had believed.

When His Own Decisions Caught Up With Him

The company opened a formal review of Spencer’s performance.

It examined his attendance, incomplete assignments, previous warnings, and unauthorized proposal.

Everything was documented.

Spencer, however, refused to accept responsibility.

He called Delaney.

“Your brother is trying to ruin my career. You need to talk to your father.”

My sister was at her architecture studio reviewing construction plans.

“Did you send the proposal without permission?” she asked.

“That’s not the point.”

“It is the point, Spencer.”

He grew irritated.

“You’ve been acting differently ever since you postponed the wedding.”

Delaney looked at the drawings spread across her desk.

For almost two years, she had solved his problems, defended his mistakes, and apologized whenever he became upset.

This time, she refused.

“Maybe I’m finally learning to listen to myself.”

Three days later, after completing the company’s review and applicable procedures, Human Resources informed Spencer that his employment was ending because of his documented performance and conduct issues.

He left the building carrying a folder of personal belongings.

When he returned to his mother’s house, Beverly was furious.

“You have to save that wedding,” she insisted. “Everything depends on it.”

His brother immediately asked about the job he had been promised.

His sister complained that she had already started planning to finance a new car.

Nobody asked about Delaney.

Nobody wondered how she felt.

They only talked about money, employment, and connections.

For one uncomfortable moment, even Spencer seemed to recognize how much his family expected to gain from the marriage.

But that realization didn’t stop him from trying to get Delaney back.

The Meeting at the Coffee Shop

The following Saturday, Delaney arranged to meet Spencer at a quiet coffee shop near Charleston’s waterfront.

She asked me to come with her.

Spencer arrived fifteen minutes early, wearing a navy blazer and carrying a bouquet of pink peonies.

When my sister walked inside, she wore comfortable wide-leg trousers, a simple white blouse, and flat shoes.

She looked beautiful.

More importantly, she looked comfortable.

Spencer immediately glanced at her feet.

“Couldn’t you have worn a little heel? You know it makes your legs look better.”

I watched my sister’s face.

For a moment, the familiar hurt appeared in her eyes.

Then something changed.

She pulled out a chair.

“Sit down, Spencer. We need to talk.”

He placed the flowers on the table.

“I’ve been thinking. We can still get married on the original date if we keep the ceremony small. Once your father calms down, maybe he can help me start my own business.”

Delaney looked at him steadily.

“There won’t be a wedding.”

Spencer laughed nervously.

“Don’t be ridiculous.”

“I’ve canceled the venue, the photographer, and the honeymoon. I’ve recovered part of the deposits.”

His smile disappeared.

“You did all that without talking to me?”

“Yes.”

He leaned forward.

“Is this because I lost my job?”

I took my phone from my purse.

“No, Spencer. It’s because of something else.”

Then I pressed play.

The Recording He Never Expected to Hear

Spencer’s own voice came through the speaker.

“I’m embarrassed that people are going to think that woman is my wife.”

He froze.

Then Beverly’s voice followed, discussing the family business, jobs for her children, and how Delaney could be persuaded to give up her independence.

Spencer looked around the coffee shop.

“Turn that off.”

I stopped the recording.

“You recorded me?” he demanded.

“I was in the fitting room next to you. I wasn’t looking for a conversation. I simply heard what you said.”

He turned toward Delaney.

“Honey, we were just talking. My mother exaggerates everything.”

My sister didn’t raise her voice.

“Did she also exaggerate when you said you were embarrassed to walk beside me?”

Spencer looked away.

“I was frustrated.”

“And when you told me to hide my legs?”

“I was trying to protect you from other people’s comments.”

“What about asking me to quit my job?”

“I was going to be your husband.”

Delaney rested her hands on the table.

They trembled slightly, but her voice remained steady.

“That’s what I finally understand, Spencer. I wanted a husband who loved me. You wanted a father-in-law who could make your life easier.”

He shook his head.

“I loved you.”

“Maybe you believed you did. But you spent almost two years making me feel as though I should be grateful that you chose me.”

He reached toward her.

“We can start over.”

Delaney opened her purse.

She removed a small velvet box and placed it in front of him.

Inside was her engagement ring.

“I’m starting over, Spencer. But not with you.”

His expression hardened.

“Do you really think you’ll find someone who loves you the way I do?”

I nearly stood up.

But Delaney gently touched my arm.

Then she looked directly at him.

“For a long time, that question frightened me. I thought my leg meant I had to accept less than other women.”

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But being alone would be much better than spending my life beside someone who wishes he could hide me.”

Spencer stared at the ring.

“You’re going to regret this.”

Delaney stood.

“There are many things I might regret in my life. Canceling this wedding won’t be one of them.”
