Part 2 of 3

Silas stepped forward.

“Adrian, think carefully. There are legal files inside. Investor agreements. Private information.”

“Then you have nothing to worry about.”

Theo entered an override code, but the panel rejected it. He removed the casing and disconnected the internal circuit. A few moments later, the lock clicked open.

The air inside smelled of dust, cold wood, and spilled cleaning solution.

At first, the building appeared empty.

Then Adrian heard a faint tapping sound from behind a row of covered cabinets.

They moved the furniture aside and found an interior office with its handle secured from the outside.

Theo opened it.

Camille sat on the floor beneath a small window, wrapped in a furniture cover for warmth. Her face was pale, and her voice was weak, but she was conscious.

When she saw Adrian, relief filled her eyes.

“Maisie,” she whispered. “Is my daughter safe?”

Adrian removed his jacket and placed it around her.

“She’s inside the house. She’s been waiting for you.”

Camille closed her eyes as tears slipped down her cheeks.

Silas stood in the doorway, staring at her as though he had seen something impossible.

Then he spoke in a voice filled with carefully rehearsed concern.

“Camille, what happened?”

She looked directly at him.

“You already know.”

The Signature That Did Not Belong to Her

Camille was taken to the manor’s private wellness suite, where a visiting nurse examined her and helped her recover from the cold and exhaustion.

Maisie refused to leave her side.

She climbed onto the bed and curled against her mother’s shoulder, still wearing Adrian’s oversized coat.

Adrian waited until Camille had eaten and regained some strength before asking questions.

Theo stood near the door recording the conversation, while Silas remained in the library under supervision.

Camille explained that she had discovered irregular payments while organizing household invoices.

At first, the amounts were small.

A landscaping company charged for workers who had never arrived. A catering supplier billed the estate for events that had never happened. A maintenance contractor received monthly payments despite having closed two years earlier.

All three businesses were connected to the same holding company.

That company belonged to Silas’s brother-in-law.

“I thought it was an accounting mistake,” Camille said. “So I printed the records and placed them in a folder for Mr. Lockwood.”

Adrian leaned forward.

“What happened next?”

“Silas found the folder before you came home.”

Camille said Silas offered her money to forget what she had seen. When she refused, he presented a resignation letter carrying her electronic signature.

It claimed that she had stolen valuable artwork and left the estate voluntarily.

“I never signed it,” Camille said. “He said no one would believe a house manager over the man who built the company with you.”

Maisie tightened her arms around her mother.

Camille kissed the top of her head before continuing.

Silas had taken her phone and keys, then brought her to the west building, claiming he only needed time to remove the financial records.

Before he left, Camille managed to recover her phone from his open briefcase. She sent one message to Adrian and hid the device under a linen cart when Silas returned her briefly to the house.

Adrian’s hands remained still on his knees, but his eyes had become hard.

“Where is the original folder?”

Camille looked toward Maisie’s stuffed rabbit.

“Inside Clover.”

Maisie lifted the toy.

Camille had opened a seam along the rabbit’s back and hidden a small memory card inside before confronting Silas.

Theo retrieved it carefully.

The files contained six years of invoices, private transfers, altered contracts, and recordings of Silas discussing payments with several suppliers.

The evidence did not merely show that Silas had stolen from the estate.

It showed that he had quietly redirected company funds, created false debts, and prepared documents that would eventually give him control of Adrian’s business if Adrian became unable to manage it.

The friend Adrian had trusted most had been building a second empire beneath his feet.

The Last Conversation Between Brothers

Silas sat in the library beside the fire, holding a glass of water he had not touched.

Adrian entered alone.

For nearly two decades, the two men had called each other brothers. They had slept in truck cabins during winter deliveries, survived failed contracts, and worked through nights when the company could barely make payroll.

Adrian had trusted Silas with bank accounts, property documents, and decisions involving thousands of employees.

Now the room felt smaller than it ever had before.

Silas spoke first.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Adrian remained standing.

“Camille saved every record.”

Silas’s jaw tightened.

“She misunderstood what she saw.”

“She recorded your voice.”

Silence followed.

Silas finally leaned back in his chair.

“Do you know what it was like standing beside you all these years?”

Adrian said nothing.

“Every newspaper called you a visionary. Every investor wanted your opinion. Every employee knew your name. I handled the problems you never saw, but I remained the man walking two steps behind you.”

“So you decided to take everything?”

“I decided to claim what I helped create.”

Adrian looked at the man he had once trusted with his life and felt no anger at first. Only grief.

“You could have asked for more authority.”

Silas laughed bitterly.

“You would have given me another title and thanked me at another banquet.”

“You placed a mother in a locked building and left her daughter waiting in the snow.”

Silas looked away.

“That was not supposed to happen.”

“But it did.”

Adrian walked toward the desk and placed the false resignation letter in front of him.

“You didn’t only betray me. You tried to erase a woman because you believed her position made her powerless.”
