Holding Cloves in Your Mouth: A Natural Way to Relieve Toothache

Part 2 of 2

Steps for Safe Use:

  1. Take 2–5 firm, aromatic whole cloves.
  2. Place them near the aching tooth, either between your cheek and gum or directly against the sore area.
  3. Gently suck on the cloves to release their natural oils.
  4. Once softened, chew lightly to release more eugenol.
  5. Keep them in place for 10–15 minutes; mild numbness and reduced pain usually occur within a few minutes.
  6. Spit out the cloves and rinse your mouth with warm water.

Homemade Clove Oil Remedy

For a stronger, more concentrated treatment, you can make your own clove oil at home.

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves or 4–5 crushed whole cloves

Preparation:

  1. Combine cloves and oil in a small glass jar.
  2. Let the mixture sit for 24 hours to allow the oils to infuse.
  3. Strain out solids using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

How to Use:

  • Dip a cotton ball or swab into the oil.
  • Apply gently to the painful tooth or gum for 5–10 minutes.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water afterward.

Additional Oral Health Benefits of Cloves

Cloves provide more than temporary pain relief. Their properties support overall oral hygiene:

  • Freshens breath naturally: Cloves inhibit odor-causing bacteria.
  • Reduces gum inflammation: Anti-inflammatory effects soothe swollen gums.
  • Helps prevent cavities: Cloves suppress harmful bacteria that contribute to tooth decay.
  • Eases sore gums and mouth ulcers: Clove oil can calm minor sores.
  • Supports everyday oral hygiene: Adding a drop of clove oil to toothpaste or mouthwash enhances antibacterial protection.

Important Precautions

While cloves are generally safe, follow these guidelines:

  • Do not swallow whole cloves or apply clove oil directly in large amounts.
  • Avoid undiluted clove essential oil, which can irritate or burn tissues.
  • Children and pregnant women should use clove remedies only under professional guidance.
  • Cloves provide temporary relief—they do not treat infections, cavities, or serious dental issues.
  • Persistent pain, swelling, fever, or sensitivity requires professional dental care.
