Part 2 of 3

I told him everything.

From finding Julian in Chloe’s kitchen…

…to Evelyn placing her hand on Chloe’s stomach.

…to being told I had failed as a wife because I couldn’t have children.

Arthur listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he folded his hands.

“Before we discuss the affair,” he said, “I want to ask one question.”

“Go ahead.”

“Whose name is on the deed?”

“Mine.”

He nodded once.

“Good.”

Then he asked another.

“Joint bank accounts?”

“One household account. Separate savings.”

“Children?”

I shook my head.

His pen stopped moving.

“Medical history?”

The Secret I Had Protected for Four Years

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I opened my purse.

Inside was a thick manila folder.

I’d carried it for years.

Not because I expected this day.

Because I could never bring myself to throw it away.

I placed it carefully on his desk.

Arthur opened it.

The first page was a fertility evaluation from four years earlier.

The second.

Another specialist.

The third.

A laboratory report.

His eyes moved across the pages.

Then he looked back at me.

“Julian is infertile.”

I nodded.

“Completely.”

Arthur leaned back.

He didn’t look shocked.

He looked thoughtful.

“Does anyone else know?”

I laughed once.

It wasn’t a happy sound.

“No.”

Four years earlier, Julian had cried in our bedroom after the doctor explained the results.

I’d never seen him cry before.

He’d covered his face with both hands.

He’d kept saying the same sentence.

“Please don’t tell my mother.”

He said she’d never forgive him.

That she’d spend the rest of his life treating him like less of a man.

I’d promised.

So every holiday dinner…

Every insensitive joke…

Every time Evelyn asked when she was getting grandchildren…

Every time she blamed me…

I smiled.

I apologized.

I let her believe I was the problem.

Because I loved my husband.

Arthur closed the folder.

“You protected him.”

“Yes.”

“And today his mother used that secret to humiliate you.”

I nodded again.

He was quiet for a long moment.

Then he slid the folder back toward me.

“Clara, if Julian is medically infertile, then Chloe’s pregnancy raises a very different question.”

I didn’t answer.

Because for the first time since leaving that house…

I wasn’t thinking about the affair.

I was thinking about the baby.

Arthur reached for a yellow legal pad.

“We’re going to file for divorce immediately.”

His voice remained calm.

“We’ll also secure your property before Julian has time to move money or records.”

He looked directly at me.

“One more thing.”

“What?”

“Do you have access to the company’s financial statements?”

I hesitated.

Then I remembered something I’d ignored for months.

Several transfers I’d assumed were business expenses.

Invoices Julian insisted were confidential.

Credit card charges that never quite matched the receipts.

I slowly met Arthur’s eyes.

“Yes,” I said.

“I think I do.”

The DNA Test Julian Thought Would Save Him

Arthur filed the divorce petition before noon the next day.

He also recorded a notice preventing any attempt to sell or refinance my house while the case was pending.

I spent the afternoon changing passwords, freezing our joint household account, and downloading every financial record I could access from the company Julian and I had built together.

Nothing dramatic.

Just years of invoices, credit card statements, and expense reports.

At first, everything looked ordinary.

Then I noticed something.

The same apartment complex appeared again and again.

Rent.

Furniture.

Utilities.

Grocery deliveries.

The address belonged to Chloe.

I highlighted every payment.

By evening, there were dozens.

Arthur studied the spreadsheet quietly.

“Did the company authorize any of these?”

“No.”

“Did you?”

“Never.”

He leaned back.

“Good.”

He tapped the stack of papers.

“We’re keeping this simple.”

“House ownership. Medical records. Company funds.”

“That’s all we need.”

Julian called thirty-two times in two days.

I answered none of them.

His messages changed by the hour.

“Please let me explain.”

Then—

“You misunderstood.”

Then—

“You’re destroying our marriage over one mistake.”

Finally—

“Mom is devastated.”

That was the only message that made me laugh.

Not because it was funny.

Because after everything that had happened, he still believed his mother’s feelings were my responsibility.

On the third evening, someone knocked on my front door.

Julian.

He looked exhausted.

His beard had grown in.

He held no flowers.

No gifts.

Only his wedding ring in his palm.

“Can we talk?”

I stepped onto the porch and closed the door behind me.

“Five minutes.”

He nodded gratefully.

“Chloe told me you’re talking to a lawyer.”

“I am.”

“Don’t do this.”

I waited.

He looked down at the ring.

“The baby is mine.”

I said nothing.
