She gave me a tired smile.

“I know.”

Thomas Bell joined Rebecca and me in the lobby carrying a single leather portfolio.

“Keep it simple,” he said. “One story. One timeline. One set of documents. Don’t let anyone pull you into an argument.”

I nodded.

That sounded exactly like something my father would have said.

The Meeting Changed Direction

Margaret welcomed every director with coffee and pastries.

She looked perfectly composed.

If someone had walked into the room without knowing what happened over the weekend, they would have believed she was simply hosting another quarterly meeting.

Lucas leaned comfortably against the back wall scrolling through his phone.

When he noticed me, he smiled.

“Feeling better?”

I ignored him.

The meeting began with routine financial reports.

Revenue.

Inventory.

Hospital contracts.

Everything sounded normal.

Then Margaret stood.

“Before we discuss next quarter,” she said, “I’d like to address an urgent leadership concern.”

She looked directly at me.

“Daniel has experienced significant personal stress recently. For the stability of the company, I recommend temporarily transferring financial authority to a special committee.”

One director frowned.

“Is this related to family matters?”

Margaret sighed softly.

“Unfortunately, yes. Daniel has become… emotionally compromised.”

Lucas nodded dramatically.

“We’re all worried about him.”

Rebecca remained seated beside me.

She didn’t interrupt.

She didn’t need to.

Margaret continued.

“Several recent decisions have already harmed the company. Bank accounts have been frozen without consulting management.”

Murmurs spread around the room.

She had almost convinced them.

Almost.

I stood.

“You’re right.”

The room became quiet.

“The accounts were frozen.”

Margaret smiled.

She thought I had admitted making a mistake.

Then I continued.

“Because money was disappearing.”

The smile vanished.

One Document After Another

I connected my laptop to the projector.

The first screen displayed three invoices.

Each carried my signature.

Each approved payments to companies I had never hired.

“Does anyone recognize North Ridge Consulting?”

No one answered.

I displayed another invoice.

Then another.

Rebecca slid the originals across the conference table.

The chief financial officer picked one up.

After a long moment, he looked at Margaret.

“These approvals never came through our finance department.”

Margaret crossed her arms.

“Daniel approved several private investments outside company operations.”

“No,” I said.

I enlarged one signature.

Then I placed one of my authentic signatures beside it.

“The first letter is different. Whoever copied my signature connected my first and last name. I’ve never signed like that.”

The room leaned forward.

Nobody was looking at Margaret anymore.

They were looking at the screen.

Thomas opened his portfolio.

“The Harper Family Trust never authorized these payments either.”

Margaret turned toward him.

“Those were temporary transfers.”

“Temporary transfers totaling more than four hundred thousand dollars?”

She didn’t answer.

I opened another file.

The registered address for Westbridge Development appeared on the screen.

Then an older property lease.

Both listed the same address.

Lucas’s former office.

One director slowly turned toward Lucas.

“That’s your building.”

Lucas shrugged.

“Lots of companies rent offices there.”

Rebecca quietly handed everyone copies of the state registration documents.

Lucas’s name appeared as manager.

Nobody spoke.

The Person They Chose to Blame

Margaret suddenly pointed toward me.

“Ask Elena where the money went.”

I expected that.

I clicked again.

The next image filled the screen.

It was the handwritten ledger Elena had photographed months earlier.

Beside her initials appeared six fake transfers.

Beside Lucas’s initials appeared none.

I looked around the room.

“My wife found this before I came home.”

Margaret laughed.

“A photograph proves nothing.”

Rebecca stood for the first time.

“Actually, it does when the original ledger was recovered yesterday during the bank’s document request.”

Margaret froze.

Just for a second.
