Part 2 of 3

Every dollar.

I stared at the document.

“Meredith, what is this?”

“Your money. I sent it back.”

“Why would you do that? You could live comfortably for the rest of your life.”

She looked at me calmly.

“I don’t want to spend my life feeling as though you paid me to disappear.”

“You’re making an emotional decision.”

“No, Wesley. For the first time in years, I’m making a decision for myself.”

She picked up her handbag.

I watched her walk toward the front door.

Part of me expected her to turn around and ask me to reconsider.

Instead, she stopped and looked back.

“One day, you’re going to understand what you lost. And when that day comes, all your money won’t be able to bring it back.”

Then she left.

I didn’t follow her.

I had just ended a seven-year marriage, and somehow, I believed I had won.

Three Years of Silence

Life continued.

My investments expanded, my hotels became more profitable, and my name appeared regularly in financial publications.

But my house became strangely quiet.

Meredith’s flowers disappeared from the windows.

There were no handwritten notes in my briefcase.

No one waited for me at dinner to ask whether I had eaten properly during the day.

My relationship with Natalie never became the fresh beginning I had imagined.

Eventually, we went our separate ways.

I told myself that living alone suited me.

Yet there were evenings when I stood in the kitchen remembering how Meredith used to hum while arranging flowers.

I wondered where she was.

Whether she was happy.

Whether she had married someone who treated her better.

For three years, I did nothing about those questions.

Until one rainy Thursday evening.

I was sitting in my office when I remembered her final words.

“All your money won’t be able to bring it back.”

I picked up the phone and called my assistant, Graham.

“I need you to find my former wife.”

“Mrs. Harrington, sir?”

“Yes. Find out where Meredith is living and whether she’s doing well.”

A few hours later, Graham returned with a folder.

“I found her, Mr. Harrington. She owns a small flower shop in a neighborhood outside the city.”

I almost smiled.

Of course she did.

Meredith had always loved flowers.

“Is she married?”

“Not according to the information I found.”

I felt an unexpected sense of relief.

Then Graham placed a photograph on my desk.

“There’s something else you should see.”

The Photograph That Changed Everything

The photograph showed Meredith standing outside her flower shop.

She wore a simple blue cardigan, her hair tied loosely behind her head.

She was smiling.

It was the kind of smile I hadn’t seen during the final years of our marriage.

But she wasn’t alone.

Two small children stood beside her.

A boy and a girl.

They appeared to be twins.

The little girl held a bunch of daisies. The boy stood close to Meredith, looking directly at the camera.

My hands suddenly felt cold.

There was something familiar about his face.

His dark hair.

His serious expression.

The shape of his eyes.

I reached into my desk drawer and found an old photograph of myself at approximately the same age.

I placed the two pictures side by side.

The resemblance was impossible to ignore.

“Graham, how old are these children?”

“About two years old, sir.”

I stared at him.

“Two?”

“Yes, sir.”

Meredith had left three years earlier.

My thoughts returned to our final evening together.

The envelope beside her handbag.

Her hand resting on her stomach.

The way she had seemed desperate to tell me something.

Then I remembered seeing her across the street that afternoon.

She had been carrying an ultrasound envelope.

My heart began racing.

“Where is the flower shop?”

Graham gave me the address.

I grabbed my coat and rushed toward the elevator.

For the first time in years, I was terrified of discovering the truth.

The Children Behind the Glass

Thirty minutes later, my car stopped outside a modest flower shop.

Through the front window, I saw Meredith arranging roses in a wooden display.

The two children were nearby.

The little girl was carefully placing ribbons into a basket.

The boy was showing his mother a bright yellow flower.

Meredith laughed and kissed the top of his head.

I stood motionless.

The scene was ordinary.

There were no expensive cars, enormous houses, or private employees.

Just a mother and her children enjoying a quiet afternoon.

Yet it was the happiest picture I had seen in years.

When Meredith looked up and noticed me, her smile faded.

I opened the door.

A small bell rang above my head.

“Wesley?”

Her voice was cautious.

“Meredith, I need to ask you something.”

She looked at the photograph in my hand.

Her expression tightened.

“Where did you get that?”

“Please, just tell me who these children are.”

She moved closer to them.

“They’re my children.”

I swallowed.

“Are they mine too?”

Meredith didn’t answer immediately.

She studied my face.

Then she asked a question that I deserved.

“After three years, you finally want to know?”
