I Left My Wife and Our 7-Day-Old Son With My Mother and Sister for Just Four Days, Trusting Them to Take Care of Everything. “Don’t Worry, They’re in Good Hands,” My Mother Promised. But When I Returned Home Early, My Wife Was Sitting in a Cold Bedroom, Holding Our Newborn Against Her Chest. She Looked at Me With Tears in Her Eyes and Whispered, “Please Tell Me You Didn’t Know What They Were Doing.” I Wasn’t Prepared for What I Learned Next

Part 2 of 3

Before leaving, I tried Natalie one more time.

Still nothing.

I sent a message.

I’m coming home early. Don’t tell Mom. I want to surprise you.

The message showed as delivered.

But it was never read.

The House That Didn’t Feel Like Home

I pulled into our driveway shortly after eight that evening.

The first thing I noticed was that Natalie’s car was missing.

The second was the living room window.

The curtains were open, and I could see Beverly and Mallory sitting comfortably on our sofa.

There were shopping bags on the floor and takeout containers on the coffee table.

I opened the front door quietly.

Mallory looked up.

Her smile disappeared.

“Wesley? What are you doing here?”

Beverly stood so quickly that she knocked over a cushion.

“Honey! You weren’t supposed to be back until Friday.”

“Where’s Natalie?”

Neither answered immediately.

Then Beverly smiled.

“She’s resting.”

“Where’s her car?”

“She lent it to Mallory.”

I looked at my sister.

“You told me Natalie was too tired to do anything, but you took her car?”

Mallory crossed her arms.

“She wasn’t using it.”

I walked toward the kitchen.

The refrigerator contained a few bottles of water, leftover takeout, and an almost empty carton of milk.

The groceries I had purchased before leaving were gone.

“Where’s the food I bought for Natalie?”

Beverly followed me.

“We’ve been managing the household, Wesley. Don’t come home and start criticizing everything.”

I didn’t answer.

I was already walking toward our bedroom.

What I Found Behind the Closed Door

The bedroom door was shut.

When I opened it, the room was dim and noticeably cooler than the rest of the house.

Natalie was sitting on the edge of our bed, holding Miles against her chest.

She wore the same gray cardigan she had been wearing when I left.

Her hair was tangled, and her face looked pale with exhaustion.

A half-empty bottle of water stood on the bedside table.

When she saw me, she didn’t smile.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Wesley?”

I crossed the room.

“Honey, what’s going on?”

She held Miles closer.

“Are you really home?”

“Of course I am.”

Then she whispered the words that changed everything.

“Please tell me you didn’t know what they were doing.”

My stomach tightened.

“Know what?”

She looked toward the hallway.

“Your mother told me you wanted her to take control of everything while you were away.”

I sat beside her.

“What do you mean?”

“She took my phone whenever I tried to call you. She said I was making you anxious and distracting you from work.”

I felt my hands turn cold.

Natalie continued quietly.

“Mallory used my debit card. They borrowed my car. And whenever I asked for help with Miles, your mother said I needed to learn to manage on my own.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Her expression broke my heart.

“I tried. Every time I called, someone was standing beside me. Yesterday, your mom told me you’d complained that I was being too demanding.”

I stared at her.

“I never said that.”

“I know that now.”

She looked down at Miles.

“But after three days of barely sleeping, I started wondering whether you were disappointed in me.”

I pulled her gently into my arms.

“Natalie, listen to me. You and Miles are the most important people in my life. Nothing about this is your fault.”

For several moments, she couldn’t speak.

She simply leaned against me while our son slept between us.

The Conversation My Mother Never Expected

I made sure Natalie and Miles were comfortable, then returned to the living room.

Beverly was standing near the kitchen counter.

Mallory was holding her phone.

“We need to talk,” I said.

Beverly sighed.

“I assume Natalie has been complaining.”

“She told me what happened.”

“She’s emotional, Wesley. New mothers often are.”

I shook my head.

“Being exhausted doesn’t mean she’s imagining things.”

Mallory rolled her eyes.

“We gave up four days to help your family. A little appreciation would be nice.”

“You used her debit card without checking with me.”

“She said I could borrow it.”

“Then show me what you bought.”

Mallory hesitated.

Beverly stepped between us.

“I told her it was fine.”

“It wasn’t your decision.”

My mother stared at me.

“I’m your mother.”

“And Natalie is my wife. Miles is my son.”

The room went quiet.

I asked Beverly why she had discouraged Natalie from contacting me.

She looked away.

“You were under pressure at work. I was protecting you.”

“By making my wife believe I didn’t want to hear from her?”

“You’re exaggerating.”

“No, Mom. I’m finally listening to what happened while I wasn’t here.”

Mallory grabbed her handbag.
