He nodded slowly.

“My name is David Keller.”

The name meant nothing to me.

“You’ve probably never heard of me.”

“That’s correct.”

He took a long breath.

“Everything that happened over the last four months was planned.”

My chest tightened.

He continued before I could interrupt.

“The consulting company that hired you…”

He swallowed.

“…doesn’t exist.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“I created it.”

Silence filled the apartment.

I waited for him to smile.

To admit it was some insane joke.

He didn’t.

“You’re lying.”

“No.”

“The interviews?”

“Real.”

“The office?”

“Leased temporarily.”

“My salary?”

“I paid every dollar.”

I couldn’t process what I was hearing.

Four months.

International flights.

Housing.

Contracts.

Insurance.

He had paid for all of it?

“Why?”

He rubbed both hands together as though trying to stay warm.

“Because I needed time here.”

“For what?”

His eyes drifted toward the empty wall where my photographs had once hung.

“To find out who you really were.”

A Name I Hadn’t Heard in Forty Years

I shook my head.

“This is insane.”

“Probably.”

He didn’t argue.

He simply accepted it.

Then he spoke a name I hadn’t heard in over four decades.

“Carol Merrick.”

Everything inside me stopped.

College.

Autumn leaves.

A small church near campus.

A young woman who always carried a worn leather Bible under one arm.

Carol.

We had dated less than a year before life carried us in different directions.

I hadn’t thought about her in years.

Not because she wasn’t important.

Because I believed she’d simply moved on.

I looked back at David.

“…How do you know Carol?”

His lips trembled.

Barely.

“She was my mother.”

Neither of us spoke.

The refrigerator hummed quietly behind us.

Outside, someone laughed in the parking lot.

Inside my apartment, time seemed to stop.

Then David looked directly into my eyes.

“And I think…”

He struggled to finish.

“…I think you’re my father.”

The Box His Mother Never Opened

Neither of us spoke.

The apartment felt strangely quiet after those words.

“…I think you’re my father.”

I looked at David.

Then I looked at the empty wall where my family photographs had once hung.

Forty years.

That wasn’t a misunderstanding.

That was an entire lifetime.

I finally found my voice.

“If that’s true…”

I swallowed.

“…why didn’t Carol ever tell me?”

David lowered his eyes.

“Because she was afraid.”

He walked toward the bedroom.

For one terrifying second, I wondered if he was leaving.

Instead, he returned carrying an old wooden box.

Its brass latch was scratched.

The corners were worn smooth from years of being handled.

He placed it gently on my dining table.

“She kept this until the day she died.”

I opened the lid.

Inside were dozens of yellowed envelopes tied together with faded blue ribbon.

Every envelope carried my name.

Daniel Harper.

Every stamp space was blank.

None had ever been mailed.

Beneath them rested photographs.

Carol holding a newborn baby.

A little boy blowing out birthday candles.

A teenager wearing a baseball uniform.

Years of birthdays.

Years of Christmas mornings.

Years I had never seen.

I picked up the first letter.

The date read October 1984.

“Daniel…”

The ink blurred halfway down the page.

Tear stains.

She had cried while writing it.

I couldn’t finish reading.

My hands were shaking too hard.

The Bible Carol Left Behind

David carefully lifted one last item from the box.

A worn leather Bible.

Its cover had faded almost gray.

The pages had softened from years of use.

“Mom carried this everywhere.”

He opened it without searching.

Apparently he already knew the page by heart.

A sentence had been underlined in blue ink.

“The truth will set you free.”

Beside the verse, Carol had written only one sentence.

“Lord, please forgive me for stealing his chance to be a father.”

I closed my eyes.

Forty years earlier, I had assumed Carol simply wanted a different life.

I had never imagined she had been carrying this secret alone.

David quietly continued.

“She told me my father died before I was born.”
