Part 2 of 3

“Stop pretending your office title matters here.”

Before I could answer, someone knocked firmly on the door.

Every member of the medical staff in the room immediately straightened.

Lieutenant General Roland Keene entered in full uniform.

Grant’s smile disappeared.

The general walked directly to my bedside and raised his hand in salute.

“Colonel Langley, I apologize for arriving during your recovery, but headquarters instructed me to deliver these orders personally.”

I returned the salute as carefully as I could.

General Keene handed me a sealed folder.

“Your promotion review has been approved, and you have been selected to lead the new Strategic Operations Command.”

Silence filled the room.

Grant stared at me.

Paige’s face lost all color.

General Keene turned toward her.

“Major Donnelly, why are you standing in this restricted medical room dressed as a civilian?”

Paige immediately stepped away from Grant.

“Sir, I can explain.”

Grant looked from her to me.

“Major?”

The general’s expression hardened.

“Mr. Holloway, you were admitted as Colonel Langley’s spouse. Given the circumstances, I suggest you leave immediately.”

Grant looked at me as though I were responsible for his humiliation.

“Tessa, tell him this is unnecessary.”

For years, he had depended on me to rescue him from the consequences of his own choices.

That version of me no longer existed.

“I want both of them removed.”

The First Truth Comes Out

Two security officers escorted Grant from the room.

Paige remained because General Keene ordered her to stay for questioning.

Once the door closed, my strength began to leave me.

A nurse adjusted my blanket while another checked my blood pressure.

General Keene waited until I was steady before speaking.

“Tessa, I am sorry you had to discover this today.”

“There is more, isn’t there?”

He glanced toward Paige.

“Yes.”

An internal review had found that someone within my administrative chain had accessed restricted personnel records connected to my family, medical leave, and legal correspondence.

Some of those records included references to my grandfather’s trust.

My arms tightened around Evelyn.

“Who accessed them?”

General Keene did not answer immediately.

Paige lowered her eyes.

That was enough.

“What did you tell Grant?” I asked.

She swallowed.

“I did not give him documents.”

“That was not my question.”

Paige’s voice became quieter.

“He contacted me several months ago. He said you were hiding financial problems and asked whether you were under investigation.”

“And you believed him?”

“At first, I told him to speak with you. But he kept calling.”

She admitted that she had overheard part of a conversation between me and the trust attorney. She knew there was a significant inheritance, though she claimed she did not know the full amount.

Grant had used her uncertainty to gather information.

“What about the ring?” I asked.

Paige looked down at it.

“It is not real.”

I almost smiled at the absurdity.

“Then why wear it?”

Her eyes filled with shame.

“Grant said you would only react if you believed he had completely replaced you.”

I looked at Evelyn sleeping peacefully in my arms.

“I was in labor when he threw me out.”

Paige closed her eyes.

“I did not know that.”

“But you knew I had just given birth, and you still walked into this room.”

She had no answer.

The Money He Thought He Could Reach

My trust attorney, Mara Ellison, arrived later that evening.

She was a composed woman with silver-rimmed glasses and a reputation for discovering problems before other people realized they had created them.

She confirmed that the transfer of my inheritance had been completed that morning.

The assets were protected by the trust.

Grant had no legal right to them.

However, there was another concern.

Someone had made several financial inquiries using information connected to my identity.

There had been questions about property financing, a private investment account, and a new company registered in Delaware.

“I did not authorize any of that,” I said.

“We know,” Mara replied. “Nothing was completed, but someone was preparing to act before the trust became final.”

Grant’s email appeared in one communication.

Another name appeared beside his.

Judith Holloway.

His mother.

Judith had never hidden her opinion of me. She believed military wives should build their lives around their husbands, even when the wife was the one wearing the uniform.

She often described me as distant, ambitious, and overly independent.

Now I understood that her interest in family loyalty had less to do with affection and more to do with access.

A message from Judith appeared on my phone while Mara was still sitting beside me.

Tessa, Grant says there has been an unfortunate misunderstanding. A child deserves both parents, and family money should remain within the family. Please do not allow outsiders to make this situation worse.

I showed the message to Mara.

She read it once.

“Do not respond.”

I saved a copy, forwarded it to her, and blocked Judith’s number.

For the first time since leaving my house, I felt something close to relief.

Grant had believed I was alone.

He had mistaken privacy for helplessness.

The Letter My Grandfather Left Behind

The next morning, General Keene returned with new information.

Investigators had discovered that Grant once volunteered with a military spouse support group. Through that role, he had gained limited access to a civilian portal containing contact details and dependent records.

It was not enough to open confidential files directly.

But it gave him enough information to answer security questions and search for financial records elsewhere.

He had not acted impulsively.

He had been preparing.

That afternoon, Mara returned carrying a gray folder.
