“Theodore, I think it’s best if Hannah and her daughter leave the property today.”
Hannah’s face went pale.
“Please, sir. This job is how I take care of my daughter. We’ve never taken anything from you.”
I looked at the watch.
Then at Poppy.
I wanted to believe them, but I couldn’t understand how the watch had reached her jacket.
That was when Poppy stepped forward.
The Smallest Person in the Room Spoke Up
“Grandpa Theo, I didn’t take your watch.”
Her voice trembled.
I lowered myself to one knee.
“Then tell me what happened, sweetheart.”
She pointed directly at Russell.
“He put it there.”
The room went silent.
Russell stared at her.
“Poppy, that’s not a nice thing to say.”
But she didn’t look away.
“I saw you.”
Hannah gently touched her daughter’s shoulder.
“Sweetheart, are you sure?”
Poppy nodded.
“He came into the little room where Mommy keeps our coats. He put something shiny in my pocket.”
Russell gave a dismissive laugh.
“She’s confused. I was checking the staff area because the watch was missing.”
Poppy frowned.
“But you had the watch before you checked my coat.”
I slowly stood.
“Russell, where exactly did you find the watch?”
“In her jacket, as I already explained.”
“And why were you searching a four-year-old child’s belongings without speaking to her mother first?”
His expression tightened.
“I was doing my job.”
I looked toward the security monitor on my desk.
“Then let’s review the footage.”
Russell immediately shook his head.
“The camera near the staff lounge has been unreliable lately.”
I studied him.
“Then we’ll check the hallway camera.”
He hesitated.
And for the first time in ten years, I noticed fear in his eyes.
The Camera That Changed Everything
I asked another security supervisor, Warren Bishop, to retrieve the recordings directly from the main system.
Russell insisted on accompanying him.
I refused.
“Stay here, Russell. I’d like you to watch this with me.”
Twenty minutes later, Warren returned with the footage.
The first recording showed Russell entering my office at 2:14 p.m.
He remained inside for approximately three minutes.
Then he walked toward the staff lounge.
A second camera showed him entering the small coatroom.
Poppy’s pink jacket hung from a low hook near the door.
Russell approached it, reached into his own jacket, and placed something inside the child’s pocket.
The recording didn’t show the object clearly.
But it showed enough to contradict his account.
Hannah covered her mouth.
Poppy whispered:
“See, Grandpa? I told you.”
I turned toward Russell.
“You entered my office before you searched Poppy’s jacket. Why didn’t you tell me that?”
He stared at the screen.
“There must be an explanation.”
“Then I’d like to hear it.”
Russell rubbed his forehead.
“I was trying to protect you. That woman and her daughter have become too close to you.”
I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“So you placed my wife’s watch in a child’s pocket?”
He said nothing.
“You were prepared to destroy Hannah’s reputation and frighten her little girl because you didn’t approve of my friendship with them?”
Russell finally looked at me.
“You don’t understand how vulnerable you’ve become.”
I shook my head.
“No, Russell. I think I’m finally beginning to understand.”
I instructed Warren to remove Russell’s access to the house and company systems while the matter was investigated.
Then I called an independent attorney.
Something told me the missing watch was only the beginning.
The Millions Hidden Behind a Trusted Name
My attorney, Rebecca Ellison, arrived the following morning with an outside forensic accountant.
I explained everything, including Russell’s unusual involvement in company payments.
Rebecca listened carefully.
“Theodore, when was the last time you personally reviewed the accounts connected to your outside contractors?”
I thought for a moment.
“Probably more than a year ago.”
She exchanged a glance with the accountant.
“Then we should start there.”
Over the next several days, they reviewed bank records, vendor contracts, and payment approvals.
What they uncovered left me stunned.
For nearly three years, Russell had used his position to approve inflated invoices from several security consulting companies.
Those businesses appeared legitimate on paper.
But further investigation revealed that they were connected to Russell through a series of business registrations and financial accounts.
The total amount involved was approximately $4.6 million.
Even worse, he had prepared additional authorization documents that would have allowed him to approve much larger transfers without my direct involvement.
Some documents contained signatures that appeared to have been copied from older company records.
Rebecca placed the paperwork in front of me.
“Theodore, this wasn’t a simple accounting mistake. Someone took advantage of the authority you gave him.”
I stared at the documents.
For ten years, Russell had sat across from me at dinner.
He had attended Evelyn’s memorial service.
He had stood beside me during some of the loneliest moments of my life.
And all that time, he had been using my trust for his own benefit.
“Why did he suddenly want Hannah and Poppy gone?” I asked.
Rebecca pointed to a recent series of emails.
“Because you started asking questions again. You requested financial reports, scheduled meetings without him, and began reviewing decisions he previously handled alone.”
I remembered the walks in the garden.
The lunches in the kitchen.
Poppy asking me why I spent every day working.
For the first time in years, I had started living again.
And Russell had realized that a man who was paying attention would be much harder to deceive.
The Truth Russell Couldn’t Hide
When Russell was confronted with the findings, he initially denied any wrongdoing.
He claimed the payments were legitimate business expenses and insisted the accounting team had misunderstood his responsibilities.
But the records told a different story.
My attorney provided the evidence to the appropriate authorities, who opened a formal investigation.
The companies receiving the payments were examined, and Russell’s access to my business was permanently revoked.
As additional evidence emerged, he faced criminal charges related to the unauthorized transactions and falsified records.
I didn’t feel triumphant.
I felt disappointed in myself.
