Happy Soul Moral Stories

“I’ve Fallen in Love With Another Woman, and I’m Not Leaving Either of You! You’ll Get Me Monday Through Wednesday, and She Gets the Rest of the Week. Stop Being So Selfish and Be Grateful I’m Not Walking Out on You!” My Husband Snapped After Putting Our 5-Year-Old Son to Bed. I Didn’t Cry or Beg. I Simply Opened My Blue Notebook and Wrote Down His Schedule. When He Returned Monday With His Suitcase, He Saw What I’d Written Beneath His Name. His Smile Vanished. “Maggie… Are You Seriously Doing This?”

Part 2 of 3

I turned the notebook toward him.

At the top of the page were the words Kieran’s Care Schedule.

Beneath them were the responsibilities involved in raising our son: school transportation, meals, bedtime, medical appointments, and weekend activities.

Callum read the first few lines.

“What’s this supposed to mean?”

“You said you’d be here Monday through Wednesday. I wanted to understand what that actually means for Kieran.”

He gave an impatient laugh.

“Maggie, I wasn’t talking about becoming a full-time babysitter.”

I looked at him.

“He’s your son, Callum. Taking care of him isn’t babysitting.”

“Don’t start lecturing me. You know I love that boy.”

“I do. That’s why I’m asking you to explain how this arrangement would work.”

He pushed the notebook away.

“You’re making this unnecessarily complicated.”

“No. You made it complicated when you decided to live in two homes without discussing it with either of us.”

He leaned back.

“And what about our marriage?”

I turned to the next page.

“If you’re continuing your relationship with Elena, then as far as I’m concerned, we’re separated. We’ll need to work out our living arrangements and parenting responsibilities properly.”

His expression changed.

“Separated? What are you talking about?”

“You can remain Kieran’s father without remaining my husband in every sense that suits you.”

“This is still my house!”

“I haven’t said otherwise. I’m not locking you out or denying your rights. I’m saying you don’t get to move between two relationships and expect me to pretend nothing has happened.”

He stared at me.

“So you’re refusing to let me sleep in our bedroom?”

“I’m refusing to continue our marriage on the terms you’ve chosen without my consent.”

His phone began ringing.

He looked at the screen and immediately silenced it.

A few seconds later, it rang again.

“Is that Elena?” I asked.

“It’s not important.”

“Does she know you’re here?”

“Of course she does.”

“Then answer it.”

He stood abruptly and walked onto the back porch.

Through the window, I watched him pacing with the phone pressed to his ear.

When he returned five minutes later, his face had gone pale.

“What exactly have you told Elena about us?” he demanded.

I stared at him.

“I haven’t spoken to Elena.”

“Well, she thinks I’ve been lying to her.”

I slowly closed the notebook.

“Have you?”

He looked away.

“I told her our marriage was basically over.”

“Did you tell her I knew that?”

He didn’t answer.

“Callum, does Elena believe you and I were already separated before you started seeing her?”

He rubbed his forehead.

“I said things were complicated.”

“No. You told her one story and told me another.”

He stood there, unable to meet my eyes.

And suddenly, his carefully organized schedule made sense.

He hadn’t been trying to preserve two honest relationships.

He’d been trying to keep two women from discovering that neither had agreed to the arrangement he wanted.

PART 2 — THE CHOICE HE NEVER EXPECTED ME TO MAKE

The Message From Elena

The following evening, Kieran was building a tower from plastic blocks when my phone buzzed.

The message came from an unfamiliar number.

Hi, Maggie. This is Elena. I know you probably don’t want to hear from me, but I think Callum told us completely different stories.

I read it twice.

My first reaction was anger. This was the woman my husband had been seeing while I packed school lunches, arranged doctor’s appointments, and believed our marriage was intact.

But her next message made me pause.

He told me you were already separated emotionally and only living together because of your son. I didn’t know he was still treating you as his wife.

I sat down at the kitchen table.

For several minutes, I considered whether to respond. I didn’t want to become involved in a confrontation with Elena, but I needed to understand what Callum had been saying.

Finally, I typed:

Did he tell you I agreed to him living in both homes?

Her response arrived almost immediately.

No. He said you’d already discussed separating and that he was working out a parenting arrangement.

I looked toward the living room, where Kieran was making dinosaur noises.

Callum hadn’t simply omitted details.

He’d told Elena our marriage was effectively finished while telling me he wanted everything to continue.

I replied with a brief explanation that I hadn’t agreed to any such arrangement.

Elena thanked me.

I didn’t ask about their private relationship or demand details that would only hurt me further.

Whatever Elena believed, Callum was the person who had promised to be faithful to me.

He was the one who owed me an explanation.

“You Had No Right to Talk to Her!”

Callum came over Thursday evening to see Kieran.

I’d arranged for him to handle dinner and bedtime, and I intended to use the time to catch up on paperwork.

But the moment he entered the kitchen, I could tell he was angry.

“You’ve been talking to Elena.”

I put down the dish towel.

“She contacted me.”

“You had no business getting involved in my relationship with her.”

I stared at him.

“Your relationship with her? Callum, you’re still married to me.”

“You know what I mean. You didn’t have to go behind my back.”

I couldn’t help laughing.

“You spent months seeing another woman behind my back, and now you’re lecturing me about honesty?”

He lowered his voice.

“Don’t make a scene. Kieran might hear.”

I glanced toward the living room.

“You’re right. We’ll discuss this after he’s asleep.”

My calm response seemed to surprise him.

That evening, I let Callum manage everything.

He prepared Kieran’s dinner, helped him bathe, packed his school backpack, and read the dinosaur book he’d been asking for all week.

I didn’t hover or offer reminders.

When Kieran finally fell asleep, Callum returned to the kitchen and stood beside the refrigerator, studying the care schedule I’d attached with a magnet.

“I didn’t realize how much you do every day,” he said quietly.

I looked up from my laptop.

“You’ve lived here for eight years.”

He nodded.

“I know. I guess I just never thought about all the little things.”

I waited.

He pulled out a chair.

“Elena and I had a fight.”

“I assumed as much.”

“She thinks I misled her about our marriage.”

“Did you?”

He looked down.

“I told her things between us weren’t working. That wasn’t completely untrue.”

“But you didn’t tell her you still expected me to be your wife.”

He sighed.

“I didn’t know how to explain it.”

“Then maybe you shouldn’t have promised her a future you hadn’t discussed with me.”

He was quiet for a long time.

Finally, he said, “Things are over between Elena and me.”

For a moment, I felt an overwhelming rush of relief.

I’d spent eight years loving Callum. Despite everything, part of me still wanted him to come home, apologize, and somehow make our family whole again.

He reached across the table and touched my hand.

“I made a terrible mistake, Maggie. I know that now. You’re the woman I want.”

I looked at our hands.

Then I asked the question that had been bothering me since Friday.

“If I’d agreed to your two-house arrangement, would you still be seeing Elena?”

He went completely still.

“Maggie, why does that matter? I ended it.”

“Because I need to know why.”

“I told you. I love you.”

“Then answer the question.”

He looked toward the window.

“Things would have been different if everyone had been comfortable with the arrangement.”

I gently withdrew my hand.

There was my answer.

He hadn’t ended the relationship because he’d suddenly understood how badly he’d treated me.

He’d ended it because the arrangement he wanted had become impossible.

The Apology That Wasn’t Enough

Callum noticed me pulling away and immediately leaned forward.

“Come on, Maggie. Don’t do this. I ended things with her. What more do you want?”
