King Charles is said to have very different dynamics with each of his sons. While his bond with Prince Harry has been strained for years, insiders claim that even with Prince William — his loyal heir and stand-in during illness — the relationship is far from flawless.
During Charles’ cancer treatment, William has been a constant presence, taking on additional royal duties and ensuring the monarchy runs smoothly. Outwardly, father and son appear to function as a strong team. Yet behind palace doors, their relationship has sometimes been anything but harmonious.
Heated arguments and ‘angry rows’

According to royal expert Rebecca English, loud disputes between Charles and William have occasionally been overheard by staff. “Harsh words have been exchanged in the past, angry rows permeating even the thickest castle walls,” she reported for the Daily Mail.
One source of tension has been professional disagreements, such as the future of the Royal Collection’s ivory treasures. William has advocated for destroying them, while Charles views them as important historical artifacts. The issue reportedly led to a “frank” exchange between the two.
A royal aide also described their bond as “tricky” and revealed that William rarely calls his father directly, instead going through the King’s private office to arrange conversations. Still, insiders stress that these clashes have eased in recent years, with both men adapting to their evolving roles.
