Her money.

The proceeds from her parents’ property had entered Corbin’s account and then moved into the company only days later.

Meredith touched the page.

“He told everyone he built that company himself.”

Grant nodded.

“There’s more.”

He placed several contracts beside the statement.

Over the previous three years, Corbin had approved unusually large payments to outside consulting firms.

Some had questionable addresses.

Others had provided services Grant could not verify.

One trail appeared to connect indirectly to Kendra Vale—the woman Corbin had left Meredith for.

Meredith stared at the documents.

Her divorce suddenly seemed like only one piece of a much larger problem.

“What happens now?”

“You get your own attorney,” Grant said. “And I get an independent audit.”

The Man at the Door

Corbin discovered the review before the audit was complete.

He arrived at Grant’s house on a Saturday afternoon.

Meredith saw his SUV and felt her stomach tighten.

Grant told her she could remain inside.

She shook her head.

“I spent eighteen years avoiding uncomfortable conversations. I’m done doing that.”

They walked outside.

Corbin stared at Meredith.

“So this is where you’ve been hiding.”

“I’m not hiding.”

His eyes moved toward Grant.

“You need to stay out of my marriage.”

Grant’s voice remained calm.

“I’m not investigating your marriage. I’m investigating company transactions.”

Corbin’s expression shifted.

Grant continued.

“And I finally learned whose money actually funded our early operation.”

Corbin immediately looked at Meredith.

That reaction told her everything.

He knew exactly what Grant meant.

“You hired an attorney?” Corbin asked.

“Yes.”

He gave a humorless laugh.

“You really want to turn eighteen years into a battle?”

Meredith looked directly at him.

“You made it a battle when you sent your wife and two children away and assumed I could never prove what I contributed.”

Corbin stared at her as if she had become someone else.

“You’ve changed.”

Meredith shook her head.

“No. You just got used to me staying quiet.”

The Life She Built Herself

Meredith did not stay with Grant forever.

That surprised him.

A month later, she found a job managing the front office of a physical therapy clinic.

Then she found a tiny rental apartment.

It had two bedrooms, an aging kitchen and barely enough storage.

She loved it.

Grant offered no argument when she told him she was leaving.

“I need to know I can support my children without replacing one man I depended on with another man who happens to be kinder,” Meredith explained.

Grant nodded.

“Then you should go.”

She blinked.

“That easily?”

“You told me what you need. Why would I argue with you about your own life?”

That answer stayed with her.

For years, Corbin had treated disagreement as something to defeat.

Grant treated boundaries as something to respect.

Meredith moved into the apartment.

She worked.

She budgeted.

She helped Nolan with homework at the kitchen table and fell asleep beside Lacey after bedtime stories.

Some nights were exhausting.

But every dollar she earned felt different.

It was hers.

The Evidence Corbin Couldn’t Explain Away

The divorce became complicated.

Corbin offered Meredith a settlement based largely on the old value of her parents’ property.

Her attorney, Marissa Boone, advised her that independent calculations told a different story.

For once, Meredith did not choose the easiest path simply to keep the peace.

“No.”

Corbin increased the offer.

Meredith still refused.

The dispute moved forward.

Bank records proved the timing of her contribution.

Old emails made Corbin’s position even harder to defend.

In one message, written during the early years of their marriage, he had thanked Meredith for “betting everything on our future.”

Meanwhile, the company audit created separate trouble.

Several payments approved by Corbin could not be satisfactorily explained, and Grant and the other partners restricted his authority while attorneys reviewed the transactions.

The life Corbin had presented as entirely his own began unraveling under documentation he never expected anyone to examine.

Meredith did not celebrate.

She was too busy rebuilding.

Months later, her attorney called while she was sitting behind the reception desk at work.

“We got the most important part.”
