His second child was asleep ten feet from me.

And his wedding was still happening.

I called Rachel.

“I’m going.”

“To the wedding?”

“Yes.”

“Claire, you don’t need to confront him publicly.”

“I’m not going there to scream.”

I looked at the folder on my kitchen table.

“I’m going because he invited me.”

PART TWO — The Wedding Program

I wore navy blue.

Nothing dramatic.

No white.

No red.

Just a simple navy dress and my grandmother’s pearl earrings.

Emma stayed in Chicago with my mother.

I carried one leather folder.

The ceremony space overlooked the Pacific.

White flowers lined the aisle. Champagne moved around on silver trays. A string quartet played near the terrace.

Patricia saw me before Daniel did.

Her eyes went immediately to my dress, then to the folder in my hand.

“Claire.”

“Patricia.”

She smiled without warmth.

“I wasn’t sure you’d actually come.”

“Daniel invited me.”

“That was generous of him.”

I looked past her at the flowers.

“Very.”

She lowered her voice.

“I hope you understand today isn’t about the past.”

“I understand exactly what today is about.”

She studied me for another second.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She looked beautiful.

And tired.

One hand rested beneath her stomach.

For the first time, I wondered how much she actually knew.

“Claire,” she said.

“Vanessa.”

She glanced at the folder.

“Thank you for coming.”

“You’re welcome.”

Daniel appeared behind her.

His smile widened when he saw me.

“You came.”

“You invited me.”

He put an arm around Vanessa.

“Five months. Can you believe it?”

“I can.”

He smiled down at her stomach.

“Mom’s already calling him the Whitmore heir.”

Patricia laughed.

“Someone has to carry on the family name.”

I touched one pearl earring.

My grandmother had worn them for thirty-four years.

“Of course.”

Daniel looked almost disappointed that I wasn’t upset.

That should have warned him.

“Claire, Why Don’t You Say Something?”

The ceremony itself was supposed to begin at five.

It never did.

Daniel had arranged a cocktail reception beforehand, and at some point he took a microphone.

He thanked his parents.

He thanked Michael.

He thanked several business partners.

Then he thanked Vanessa for “showing me what family can really look like.”

People applauded.

I remained beside my table.

Then Daniel looked directly at me.

“And since we’re talking about new beginnings…”

Several heads turned.

He smiled.

“My former wife, Claire, is actually here today.”

The applause became awkward.

Daniel continued.

“Claire and I had a long road together. Not every story gives you the ending you expected.”

Vanessa looked at him.

She wasn’t smiling anymore.

Daniel raised his glass.

“But sometimes life gives you a second chance.”

Then he did something I don’t think even Patricia expected.

He walked across the terrace and held the microphone toward me.

“Claire, why don’t you say something?”

I looked at the microphone.

“Are you sure?”

A few people laughed.

Daniel grinned.

“Absolutely.”

I took it.

The leather folder was beneath my arm.

“I only have two things.”

The terrace became quiet.

I opened the folder.

“The first is for Daniel.”

I removed a photograph.

Emma was three weeks old in it, asleep in a cream blanket.

I handed it to him.

Daniel looked down.

His smile disappeared.

“Who’s this?”

“Your daughter.”

Nobody moved.

Daniel looked at me.

Then back at the photograph.

“What?”

“Her name is Emma.”

Patricia stepped closer.

“Claire, don’t do this.”

I opened the folder again.

“I became pregnant four days before our divorce was finalized.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

“No. It isn’t.”

“You would’ve told me.”

“I was going to.”

He stared at me.

“Then why didn’t you?”

I looked at him.

“Because I came to your office and heard you tell your attorney you’d wasted the best years of your life waiting for me to give you a child.”

Daniel’s face changed.

Patricia looked at him.

Vanessa slowly removed her hand from his arm.

I handed him another page.

“The paternity test is over 99.9 percent.”

His mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“She’s mine?”

“Biologically, yes.”

“And you kept her from me?”

“I gave birth six weeks ago, Daniel.”

He looked at the photograph again.

“I want to see her.”

“Then you’ll request that properly, and we’ll establish a parenting arrangement properly.”

“I’m her father.”

“Then act like one.”

That was all I said about Emma.

I wasn’t going to turn my daughter into entertainment for two hundred strangers.

I reached for the folder again.

“The second thing isn’t personal.”

Michael stood near the bar.

I saw his expression change before I even removed the documents.

“It’s financial.”

The Money Behind the Flowers

I held up the wedding program.

At the bottom was the same gold line I’d noticed in the invitation.

“Over the last eighteen months, approximately nine hundred thousand dollars was transferred out of assets inherited from my grandmother.”

Michael started walking toward me.

“Claire.”

I continued.

“A significant portion ended up in businesses controlled by Daniel and Michael Whitmore.”

Michael reached the table.

“That’s not what happened.”

I looked at him.

“Then explain it.”

“Those were marital funds.”

Rachel had warned me he might say that.

“They weren’t.”

Daniel looked from Michael to me.

“What are you talking about?”

Michael lowered his voice.
