Part 2 of 3

Lenore noticed them next. She crossed the ballroom quickly, her smile fixed in place.

“Mara, what are you doing?”

“You invited me.”

Lenore looked at the triplets. “I invited you, not them.”

“They are my guests.”

“Take them home.”

“No.”

Nearby conversations faded.

Tessa looked toward Benjamin. “Is that him?”

Benjamin heard. He walked toward them slowly.

“Mara.”

Hearing her name in his voice after seven years made her chest tighten.

“Hello, Benjamin.”

His eyes returned to the children.

“Who are they?”

“My children.”

“How old are they?”

“Seven.”

He looked from Mara to Lenore.

“Are they mine?”

Lenore stepped forward. “This is neither the time nor the place.”

Benjamin’s voice hardened. “Mother, move.”

Before Mara could answer, Maisie tilted her head.

“Are you our dad?”

The quartet stopped.

Her small voice traveled through the ballroom.

Benjamin stood motionless.

Maisie continued, “Mom said she sent you letters. Did you lose them?”

Benjamin turned to Mara.

“What letters?”

Mara removed the first returned envelope from her purse and handed it to him.

He studied the markings.

“I never saw this.”

“There were more than twenty.”

“I never received one.”

Lenore said, “This is absurd.”

Benjamin faced her.

“Did you know Mara was pregnant?”

Lenore did not answer.

Whispers moved through the room.

“You told me she left because she never cared about me,” Benjamin said.

Mara stared at him. “You tried to call?”

“Every day for months. My number was changed, and I was told you refused to speak to me.”

Benjamin looked at his mother.

“You changed my number.”

“You needed distance.”

“You intercepted her letters.”

“I protected this family.”

Benjamin held up the envelope. “You kept my children from me.”

A voice came from the ballroom entrance.

“Benjamin?”

Katherine Winslow stood in her wedding gown beside her father. She walked forward, pale but composed.

“Are they yours?”

Benjamin answered, “I believe they may be.”

“And you did not know?”

“No.”

Katherine looked at Lenore. “But she did.”

Lenore replied, “This does not concern you.”

Katherine gave a quiet laugh. “I am standing in a wedding dress before three hundred people. It concerns me.”

She turned to Mara.

“Did you come to stop the wedding?”

“No. I came to learn whether Benjamin ignored his children or whether someone prevented him from knowing.”

Katherine slowly removed her veil.

“I cannot marry into a family that calls control protection and silence loyalty.”

Benjamin closed his eyes.

“Katherine, I’m sorry.”

“I know. But an apology cannot make this an honest wedding.”

She handed the veil to her father and walked out.

Mara felt no victory, only the weight of too many lives changing at once.

What Lenore Finally Admitted

Benjamin led Mara and the triplets into a private reading room overlooking the bay. Once the door closed, he crouched in front of the children.

“I don’t know what to say.”

Tessa answered, “You could say you’re sorry.”

His eyes filled.

“You’re right. I am sorry. I would have come if I had known.”

Cole watched him carefully. “How do we know that?”

Benjamin did not rush to promise.

“You don’t. Not yet.”

Mara noticed the honesty. The young Benjamin would have promised everything. This man understood that trust had to be built in ordinary days.
