My Family Laughed When I Arrived Alone at My Sister’s Wedding, and My Father Made Sure the Entire Ballroom Heard Him Say, “She Couldn’t Even Find a Date.” Minutes Later, After He Shoved Me Into the Fountain and the Applause Finally Died, I Looked Him Straight in the Eye and Said, “Remember This Moment.” What None of Them Knew Was That I Had Been Secretly Married for Three Years—and the Powerful Man Now Approaching the Ballroom With His Own Security Detail Was the Husband I Had Kept Secret From Them All Along

Part 2 of 3

I lost my balance on the damp stone beside the fountain.

A second later, I landed in the shallow water.

Cold water soaked through my emerald dress.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then someone laughed.

Another person clapped.

My father lifted his hands as though it had all been part of a joke.

My mother looked embarrassed, but not for me.

She was embarrassed by the scene.

Brielle covered her mouth, though I could see that she was smiling.

I slowly stood.

Water ran from my hair and sleeves.

The courtyard became quiet.

I looked directly at my father.

“Remember this moment.”

His expression changed.

“What?”

“Remember how you treated me today.”

Nobody laughed now.

I stepped out of the fountain without accepting anyone’s hand.

“Because after today, you will never be able to pretend you didn’t know what kind of father you chose to be.”

Then I walked away.

Ten Minutes Away

Inside the restroom, I stared at myself in the mirror.

My makeup had run slightly.

My dress was soaked.

Yet strangely, I did not feel embarrassed anymore.

For years, I had believed there would be one perfect achievement that would finally make my family respect me.

A promotion.

A title.

A marriage.

Something.

But standing there in a hotel restroom wearing a ruined dress, I finally understood the truth.

People who have decided not to value you will simply move the finish line.

My phone was still inside the clutch I had left at my table.

Thankfully, one of the hotel employees brought it to me.

There was a message from Nathaniel.

Ten minutes away. Security arriving first.

I closed my eyes.

Then I laughed quietly.

The timing was almost absurd.

I kept emergency clothing in my vehicle because my job required me to be prepared for sudden schedule changes.

Fifteen minutes later, I returned to the ballroom wearing a fitted navy dress and a simple black coat.

My mother spotted me first.

“You changed?”

“Obviously.”

She lowered her voice.

“Avery, your father was only joking.”

I stared at her.

“Interesting. Nobody seemed to care whether I found it funny.”

She sighed.

“Don’t ruin your sister’s wedding over one misunderstanding.”

That sentence told me everything.

What happened to me was always a misunderstanding.

What I did in response was always the problem.

Before I could answer, movement near the ballroom entrance interrupted us.

The Men at the Door

Two men in dark suits entered.

Then two more.

Their movements were controlled and professional.

One checked the corridor.

Another spoke quietly into an earpiece.

My father noticed them almost immediately.

Being an attorney, he was accustomed to believing every room belonged to him.

He walked toward them.

“Excuse me. This is a private reception.”

One of the men remained polite.

“Yes, sir.”

“Then you need to leave.”

“We are authorized to be here.”

My father frowned.

“Authorized by whom?”

The man did not answer.

Across the ballroom, I felt my phone vibrate.

One word appeared on the screen.

Here.

The double doors opened.

Conversation stopped.

Nathaniel walked inside.

Not with the casual smile he wore at home.

Not with his sleeves rolled up while cooking pasta.

He entered the way the world knew him: composed, formal, surrounded by a protective detail.

For three seconds, my family simply stared.

Then someone whispered his name.

My father’s face lost all expression.

My mother grabbed Brielle’s arm.

Nathaniel scanned the room until he saw me.

Everything about him softened.

He crossed the ballroom.

“There you are.”

I smiled.

“You made it.”

He looked at my changed clothes.

Then at my damp hair.

His eyes narrowed slightly.

“What happened?”

I glanced toward my father.

“Family wedding.”

Nathaniel understood enough not to ask again in front of everyone.

He kissed my forehead.

That was the moment my father’s world collapsed.

Who Exactly Is Your Daughter?

My mother reached us first.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “Are you Secretary Mercer?”

Nathaniel gave her a courteous nod.

“Yes.”

She looked from him to me.

“How do you know Avery?”

Nathaniel paused.

Then he looked genuinely confused.

“She’s my wife.”

The silence was extraordinary.

My aunt dropped her napkin.

Brielle stared at me.

Connor’s father whispered something I could not hear.

My father’s mouth opened, but no words came out.

Finally he managed:

“Your wife?”

“For nearly three years.”

My mother looked as though she had forgotten how to breathe.

“Avery never told us.”

Nathaniel looked at me briefly before responding.

“I imagine Avery had her reasons.”

My father suddenly recovered enough confidence to step forward.

“There must be some misunderstanding. Avery has always been very private about her life.”

Nathaniel’s expression remained neutral.
