Gasps rippled through the room.
Her gorgeous, flowing hair—the hair that made her look like a storybook princess—was gone. In its place was an adorable little bob. But all I could think about was what it meant.
Tears streamed down my face. “Avery…”
She smiled shyly. “I wanted it to be a surprise. Daddy took me to the hairdresser last week. They said it was long enough to make a wig. So now it can be your hair.”
Jake stepped forward, his voice thick with emotion. “This was all her idea. She came to me a month ago, determined to do something big for you.”
The room was silent except for quiet sniffles. Then, slowly, applause began, growing louder until everyone was on their feet, clapping for Avery.

I pulled her into the tightest hug. “This is the most beautiful gift anyone has ever given me. I love you so much, Avery. You are the most incredible daughter, and I’m so, so proud of you.”
She squeezed me back. “I love you too, Mom. You’re my favorite person ever.”
Jake knelt beside us, resting a hand on Avery’s shoulder. “You’ve made this the best day of our lives, sweetheart.” His voice broke with emotion.
That day changed everything. Avery and I had always been close, but from that moment on, we were inseparable. She didn’t just give me her hair—she gave me her heart.
But the story didn’t end there.
Weeks later, as we reflected on that life-changing moment, Jake said, “You know, we should do something bigger with this.”
I nodded. “Like a foundation—to help people with alopecia feel beautiful and supported.”

Avery, perched nearby with her coloring book, perked up. “Can I help? I wanna make other people happy like you, Mom.”
And that’s how the Love Wig Foundation was born. Avery became its heart and soul—helping design wigs, speaking at events, and writing little notes to go with each one. “To make people smile,” she’d say.
Years later, at one of our events, Avery hugged me and whispered, “See, Mom? I told you love makes everything better.”
And just like that, she reminded me once again why she is the greatest gift I’ve ever received.
