My Husband Left Me Injured on the Icy Porch, Then Ordered Me to Host His 41st Birthday Party With My Arm in a Cast—As He Took Credit for the Perfect Dinner Before Twenty-Two Guests, the Doorbell Rang at 7:30… and His Proud Smile Disappeared Before He Even Opened the Envelope

Part 2 of 3

Her tone sharpened. “What happened?”

“Travis forced me onto the icy steps last night. My arm is fractured. When I returned from the hospital, he ordered me to host his party anyway.”

After a pause, she asked, “Are you ready to leave?”

I looked at the cast. “Yes.”

Hannah explained that she could request an urgent protective order and file the petition to end the marriage that afternoon.

“How do you want the papers delivered?”

“Tonight. At seven thirty. Here at the house.”

“During the party?”

“During the party.”

By noon, cleaners filled the rooms. By four, Rebecca’s team had turned the dining room into an elegant buffet lined with silver dishes, warm bread, roasted vegetables, and baked apples.

Rebecca noticed my cast as I signed the invoice with my left hand.

“Why are you doing this for someone who let you get hurt?”

“I’m not doing it for him. I’m finishing something for myself.”

She studied me, then nodded. “Then we’ll make it beautiful.”

At five fifteen, Travis texted: “Heading home. My boss is with me. Please tell me you didn’t let everything fall apart.”

I replied: “Everything is ready.”

For once, I meant exactly what I said.

The Doorbell at Seven Thirty

When Travis entered with his supervisor, he stopped in the foyer. The floors gleamed, soft music filled the rooms, and servers carried trays of appetizers.

His surprise lasted only a second before pride took over.

“Camille always comes through when it matters,” he announced.

He pulled me close for appearance’s sake. “You did well.”

I smiled. “I told you I would take care of everything.”

Guests arrived in waves. Whenever someone asked about my cast, Travis answered first.

“She slipped on the porch,” he said. “I told her to rest, but she insisted on making the evening special.”

I watched the clock.

At seven, his mother, Diane Rowan, arrived in a cream coat and pearls. She was a polished white American woman who had spent years excusing her son’s behavior as confidence.

Her eyes moved to my arm. “What happened?”

“I fell on the icy steps.”

She leaned closer. “This party matters to Travis. You should be supervising the kitchen instead of standing around.”

I glanced toward the caterers. “They seem to have it under control.”

Diane lowered her voice. “A wife has to make an effort. Men notice when home stops feeling comfortable.”

In the past, I might have apologized.

“I’ll remember that advice for the next thirty minutes,” I said.

At seven thirty, the doorbell rang.

Travis was telling a long story about a sales award. Without turning, he called, “Camille, get the door.”

I remained beside the fireplace.

“You should answer it. It’s your final birthday surprise.”

The room quieted.

Travis smiled, enjoying the attention. “All right. Let’s see what you planned.”

He opened the door.

A process server stood on the porch in a gray overcoat, holding a large envelope. Behind him stood the cleaning manager and Rebecca.

“Travis Rowan?” the man asked.

“Yes.”

“These documents are for you.”

Travis accepted the envelope. As he read the first page, the confidence left his face.

“You filed to end our marriage?”

The cleaning manager stepped forward.

“Mr. Rowan, this is the paid invoice for today’s emergency service. Mrs. Rowan covered the full amount from her personal funds.”

Rebecca followed.
