The Next Morning, He Added Me Back to the Family Chat and Ordered Me to Make Breakfast Like Nothing Had Happened… Then His Ex-Wife Moved Into Our House, His Son Suddenly ‘Got Hurt,’ and One Security Camera Revealed What Had Really Been Happening Behind My Back”

Part 2 of 3

I looked at the suitcase.

“What’s that?”

Mark came out of the kitchen.

“Nicole’s staying here for a few days to help with Ethan.”

“She’s staying here?”

“Don’t start.”

Lily tightened her grip on my hand.

Mark pointed toward the guest room.

“Can you get that room ready? And maybe make something for dinner? Nicole hasn’t eaten.”

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I opened my purse.

I took out the envelope Jenna had prepared.

I placed it on the coffee table.

“What’s that?” Mark asked.

“Divorce papers.”

His face changed.

He grabbed them.

He read the first page.

Then he tore the packet in half.

Nicole stood very still.

Ethan stared at the television.

I looked at the pieces on the floor.

“Jenna has a printer.”

Mark’s face went red.

“You think this is funny?”

“No.”

I picked up Lily’s backpack.

“I think paper is replaceable.”

For once, I didn’t clean up the mess.

The Boy With the Injured Ankle

I went upstairs and packed.

Lily sat on the carpet beside my suitcase, holding her stuffed rabbit.

From downstairs, I heard voices.

Then footsteps.

Normal footsteps.

Not limping.

I walked into the hallway.

Ethan was coming out of his bedroom.

No crutches.

No careful steps.

He saw me and stopped.

Then he immediately shifted his weight and grabbed the wall.

“What are you doing?”

His face tightened.

“My ankle hurts.”

“I just watched you walk on it.”

“No, you didn’t.”

Behind me, Lily stepped into the hallway.

Ethan looked past me.

“Why are you staring at me?”

Lily moved closer to my leg.

“I’m not.”

“Yes, you are.”

He stepped toward her.

Lily backed away.

I moved between them.

“Ethan, stop.”

Nicole came upstairs.

“What is going on?”

“Nothing,” Ethan said quickly.

Nicole looked at me.

“Rachel, can you please stop upsetting him? He’s injured.”

“He’s walking normally.”

“He’s thirteen.”

“I know how old he is.”

Then the front door opened downstairs.

Mark.

Ethan’s expression changed immediately.

He dropped onto the top stair and grabbed his ankle.

“Dad!”

Mark came running.

“What happened?”

Nicole answered before I could.

“Rachel’s been interrogating him. He’s already in pain.”

Mark looked at me.

He didn’t ask what happened.

He didn’t look at Lily.

He didn’t ask why his son had been standing in the hallway thirty seconds earlier.

He simply said:

“What is wrong with you?”

I picked up my suitcase.

Lily grabbed my hand.

That was the old pattern.

Ethan spoke.

Nicole confirmed.

Mark decided.

I defended myself.

Not this time.

I walked downstairs.

Mark followed.

“Where are you going?”

“My parents’.”

“You’re taking Lily?”

I stopped at the front door.

Above it was the small black indoor security camera Mark had installed two years earlier after packages started disappearing from our porch.

There were two more downstairs and one covering the upstairs hallway.

I looked at it.

Then at Mark.

“If you actually want to know what happened today, check the cameras.”

I opened the door.

“Rachel.”

I didn’t turn around.

“Check them.”

And for the first time since I’d known him, I left Mark alone with a version of the story he couldn’t ask me to fix for him.

What the Cameras Had Been Watching

My parents lived forty minutes away in a small suburb outside Columbus.

My mother had already made up the guest room.

Dad carried our bags upstairs without asking questions.

Lily sat at their kitchen table while Mom reheated dinner.

Then Dad opened the oven.

“I saved something special for you, kiddo.”

He put a plate in front of Lily.

Two chicken drumsticks.

Lily looked at them.

Then at me.

Then at my father.

“Both?”

Dad smiled.

“Both.”

She didn’t touch them.

“They’re both mine?”

My mother stopped beside the sink.

Dad’s smile disappeared.

He pulled out the chair beside Lily and sat down.

“Sweetheart, they’re both yours.”

Lily picked up one drumstick.

Then she pointed at the second.

“Nobody’s gonna get mad?”

Dad looked at me.

I shook my head slightly.

He understood.

“Nobody’s getting mad.”

Lily ate slowly.

Nobody watched her plate.

Nobody asked her to share.

Nobody changed their mind about what belonged to her.

My phone began vibrating in my purse.

I had blocked Mark’s regular number, but he started calling from his office phone.

I ignored the first three calls.

Then Jenna texted me.

MARK CONTACTED MY OFFICE. CALL ME WHEN YOU CAN.

I stepped onto my parents’ back porch.

Jenna answered immediately.

“He watched the footage.”

I leaned against the railing.

“What did he see?”

“Enough that he’s suddenly much more interested in talking calmly.”

Later that night, I unblocked Mark temporarily.

He called within two minutes.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said:

“Ethan wasn’t hurt.”

I looked through the window.

Lily was sitting between my parents watching television.

“I know.”

“Nicole knew.”

I waited.

“Rachel, they planned it.”

I didn’t answer.

Mark’s voice sounded different now.

Not angry.

Flat.

He told me what he’d found.

After we left that afternoon, he had opened the security app.

He watched Ethan walking normally upstairs.

He watched Ethan step toward Lily.

He watched Nicole arrive before that.

Then he kept going backward.

On one recording, Nicole stood in our kitchen while Ethan walked normally beside her.

Her voice was clear.

“Just remember, if Rachel asks, it still hurts.”

Ethan laughed.

Nicole lowered her voice.

“I need a reason to stay here for a while. Your dad will let me if he thinks you need both of us.”

Then another sentence.

“Rachel will get tired of this eventually.”

Mark said he replayed that part three times.

Then Nicole said:
