Happy Soul Moral Stories

“My Husband Shouted, ‘I’ll Come Back for You!’ Before Climbing Out of Our Sinking SUV, Leaving Me Trapped by a Seat Belt That Wouldn’t Release and My Disabled Brother Stranded Behind Me—But When I Looked Through the Flooded Window, I Saw Him Embrace My Pregnant Half Sister on the Riverbank, and Then I Heard My Brother Whisper, ‘Rosalind, Don’t Let Them See Us Come Up’”

Part 2 of 3

“She’s already been sick for years. Nobody’s going to question an accident.”

I looked at Tobias.

For almost three years, I had suffered headaches, nausea and strange periods of exhaustion.

Garrett had always been the one taking care of me.

He made my morning drinks.

Bought my supplements.

Picked up things from the pharmacy.

“What does he mean by sick?”

Tobias hesitated.

“I had some products from your house tested.”

My stomach tightened.

“And?”

“There were substances in them that should not have been there.”

I stared at him.

“You think Garrett was making me sick?”

“Slowly.”

I stood.

“And Penelope?”

Tobias played the last section.

Garrett mentioned her by name.

She knew about the plan.

The baby was his.

For a few seconds, the only sound in the room was water dripping from my hair onto the concrete floor.

Then I reached for the phone.

“Who do we call?”

That was my first useful decision after the crash.

My Husband Cried for the Cameras

By sunrise, investigators knew Tobias and I were alive.

Garrett did not.

The SUV was recovered while we were kept out of sight.

At 6:40 that morning, a local television station showed Garrett standing near the river in a gray emergency blanket.

Montgomery had one hand on his shoulder.

Garrett looked exhausted.

His voice shook.

“I tried to get back to her.”

I leaned toward the television.

The reporter asked what happened.

“The current was too strong. Rosalind was trapped.”

He lowered his face.

“I kept calling her name.”

He had never called my name.

Not once.

The reporter asked about Tobias.

Garrett closed his eyes.

“He couldn’t get himself out.”

Beside me, Tobias gave a quiet laugh.

Garrett still believed the wheelchair had killed him.

Then came the part that mattered.

“My wife’s family built Harbor Bell,” Garrett told the reporter. “I’m going to make sure everything she cared about is protected.”

Tobias muted the television.

“He scheduled an emergency board meeting.”

I looked at him.

“When?”

“Nine this morning.”

Garrett intended to present a power of attorney and ask for temporary control over my voting shares while I was missing.

He wasn’t even waiting for a body.

I looked at the clock.

“Then let’s not keep him waiting.”

I Walked Into My Own Board Meeting

At 9:17, I stood outside Harbor Bell’s conference room.

I could hear Garrett speaking.

“This is temporary. Rosalind would want the company protected.”

I opened the door.

Twelve people turned.

Garrett stood at the head of the table holding a pen.

It fell from his hand.

“Rosalind?”

Nobody moved.

I walked inside.

“You were saying something about what I would want.”

His face had gone pale.

“Where were you?”

“In the river.”

He looked past me and saw two investigators.

“I can explain.”

I placed Tobias’s phone on the conference table.

“Good.”

Then I pressed play.

Garrett’s recorded voice filled the room.

“I fixed the belt.”

Garrett moved toward the phone.

An investigator stepped in front of him.

“Stay where you are.”

The recording continued.

My shares.

The power of attorney.

The land.

My health.

Penelope.

When it ended, nobody at the table was looking at me.

They were all watching Garrett.

He shook his head.

“That recording is fake.”

The investigator spoke.

“The SUV has been recovered. Mrs. Montgomery’s seat restraint was physically secured.”

Garrett stared at him.

Then at me.

“I want my lawyer.”

“You should.”

They took him away.

The document on the table contained what looked like my signature.

It wasn’t mine.

I picked it up and tore the copy once down the middle.

Penelope Called Me Three Weeks Later

Garrett’s arrest did not end the case.

His father had money and good attorneys.

Garrett was released while the investigation continued.

I moved out of our home.

Harbor Bell blocked his access to company records.

Doctors also confirmed that products Tobias had saved contained substances consistent with some of the symptoms I had experienced.

Then Penelope called me.

Her voice was shaking.

“Roz, please don’t hang up.”

“What do you want?”

“Garrett brought me somewhere.”

Tobias looked up from across my office.

“Where?”

“The old McHenry warehouse.”

The building sat on a neglected part of the harbor once used by one of Montgomery’s businesses.

“Why are you there?”

“Garrett and his father think I talked to investigators.”

She lowered her voice.

“I’m scared.”

I looked at Tobias.

He shook his head immediately.

“Are you hurt?”

“No.”

Then she whispered:

“Please come alone.”

The call ended.

Tobias stood.

“It’s a trap.”

“I know.”

“She stood on shore and watched us drown.”

“I know.”

I picked up my coat.

“Then why are you going?”

“Because they don’t know investigators will be listening.”

We contacted the authorities.

A plan was made.

And Tobias had one condition.

“Garrett still thinks I can’t walk.”

I understood.

“Keep it that way until you come inside.”

Montgomery Finally Said Too Much

The warehouse was nearly empty.

Penelope sat on a wooden crate.

She was not tied up.

She was not crying anymore.

When she saw me, she stood.

“You actually came.”

I stopped.

“You asked.”
