I swallowed.

“A fracture.”

Vanessa arrived with Trevor almost an hour later.

She looked shocked when she entered the room.

Trevor immediately turned toward the doctor.

“Can you tell when it happened?”

I looked at him.

Not what happened.

Not how serious is it.

His first question was when.

The doctor replied calmly.

“We can tell that it is recent, but imaging cannot identify an exact hour.”

Trevor slowly nodded.

Vanessa looked at Nora.

Then she said something that changed the entire room for me.

“She was completely fine when we left her with Audrey.”

I turned toward her.

“No, she wasn’t.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“What?”

“She was already uncomfortable when you arrived. She barely moved her left leg.”

“You never said that.”

“I didn’t understand what I was seeing yet.”

Trevor folded his arms.

“But the bruising showed up while she was with you?”

My heart started pounding.

“I discovered it while she was with me. That doesn’t mean it happened while she was with me.”

Nobody answered.

Separate Rooms

Twenty minutes later, a social worker named Dana arrived.

She explained that because Nora was too young to describe what had happened, they needed a careful timeline from everyone involved.

She would speak with us individually.

Vanessa followed me into the hallway before my interview.

She leaned close and lowered her voice.

“Just make sure you tell them the bruise wasn’t visible until after we left.”

I stared at her.

“Why is that the most important thing to you right now?”

Her face tightened.

“Because it’s true.”

“I found it afterward. That isn’t the same thing.”

“Audrey, please don’t make this complicated.”

I stepped away from her.

For the first time, I began wondering whether the morning had already been complicated long before Vanessa drove into my driveway.

The Detail Trevor Finally Admitted

The next two days were exhausting.

Doctors continued evaluating Nora while child-welfare staff worked to understand the timeline.

Then another finding complicated everything.

Imaging suggested that Nora had another older injury that was already healing.

The doctors could not say exactly when it had happened or who was responsible.

That distinction mattered.

I refused to start rewriting every previous family gathering in my mind as proof of something.

But it meant the injury to Nora’s leg could no longer be treated as one completely isolated mystery.

Two days later, Trevor found me outside the family waiting room.

He looked like he hadn’t slept.

“There’s something I should probably mention.”

I said nothing.

He rubbed his face.

“Around two in the morning, I changed Nora.”

I waited.

“She was restless. Her leg got caught awkwardly while I was moving her, and she cried.”

My entire body went cold.

“Caught where?”

He hesitated.

“I don’t know exactly. I was tired.”

“Did Vanessa know?”

Another pause.

“She woke up.”

That was enough.

Vanessa had told me nothing had happened overnight.

Now Trevor was saying Nora had cried suddenly during an incident involving the exact leg that had later been found injured.

I told Dana immediately.

My Sister’s Story Started Changing

The next time I spoke with Vanessa, she seemed less concerned with explaining the morning than with checking exactly what I had told investigators.

“Did you say Nora was crying when we arrived?”

“I said she was unusually fussy.”

“Did you say she started screaming twenty minutes later?”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“And you told them you found the bruise after we left?”

I finally looked directly at her.

“Why do you keep asking about that?”

She didn’t answer.

So I asked another question.

“Did you know about what happened at two in the morning?”

Her eyes dropped.

That was my answer.

“Vanessa.”

She sat down.

“Yes.”

“Did Nora seem different afterward?”

“A little.”

“Did you notice anything about her leg before you came to my house?”

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then:

“She wasn’t kicking as much.”

My chest tightened.

“Anything else?”

Vanessa rubbed both hands over her face.

“There was a mark.”

“Where?”

She pointed toward the same area where I had found the discoloration.

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“Was there swelling?”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Maybe a little.”

I stood.

“You knew her leg looked different before you brought her to me.”

“I didn’t know it was serious.”

“Then why did you tell me she was teething?”

Vanessa started crying.

“I was scared.”

Why She Chose Me

Later that afternoon, I called our mother.

I mentioned that Vanessa had told me Mom couldn’t babysit that Saturday.

Mom sounded confused.

“What are you talking about? I offered.”

I stopped pacing.

“You offered to watch Nora?”
