Then I Learned My Sister Had Seen Those Same Warning Signs Before She Ever Reached My House. When I Finally Discovered Why She Had Chosen Me to Babysit That Morning, I Realized Her Visit May Never Have Been as Innocent as I Thought

Part 2 of 3

Hallie.

Me.

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

“No, she wasn’t.”

Corinne finally looked at me.

“What?”

“She was already uncomfortable when you handed her to me. I asked if she was okay.”

Her jaw tightened.

Before either of us could continue, a hospital social worker entered and explained that each adult would be interviewed separately.

As Corinne walked past me, she leaned close enough that only I could hear her.

“Just make sure you tell them you noticed the bruise after we left.”

I stared at her.

That was the moment my fear changed.

Until then, I had been terrified for Wren.

Now I was beginning to wonder why my sister cared so much about establishing exactly when I had discovered that bruise.

Suddenly, Everyone Needed a Timeline

Over the next two days, that Saturday morning became a timeline measured almost minute by minute.

Corinne and Bryce said they had been together after leaving my house.

They had shopping receipts.

Their phones placed them in the same general area.

I had been alone with Wren from approximately 9:40 that morning until I arrived at the hospital before 11:00.

Nobody directly accused me of causing her injury.

But no one could simply remove me from the timeline because I said I hadn’t done anything.

That realization terrified me.

Then Bryce approached me outside a family waiting room.

He seemed nervous.

“There is one thing I probably should’ve mentioned.”

My stomach tightened.

“What thing?”

He looked down the hallway.

“Something happened around two in the morning.”

I didn’t speak.

“I was changing Wren. Her leg sort of got caught while I was repositioning her. She cried really hard, but then she settled down.”

“Caught where?”

He couldn’t give me a clear answer.

He said he had been exhausted.

He admitted he had been frustrated because Wren wouldn’t sleep.

But he insisted he had never intentionally handled her roughly.

“She cried immediately?” I asked.

“Yeah.”

I felt cold.

Corinne had told me nothing unusual had happened overnight.

I documented the conversation and gave the information to the professionals handling Wren’s case.

Then another piece of information emerged.

It Wasn’t the Only Unexplained Injury

The additional imaging showed evidence of an older rib injury that was already healing.

That changed the atmosphere completely.

No one could say exactly when the older injury had happened.

No one could say, based solely on that finding, who was responsible.

I refused to turn every difficult night Wren had ever experienced into proof of something.

But one thing was now impossible to ignore.

This was no longer just one unexplained Saturday morning.

There was another injury from an earlier period that also needed an explanation.

Meanwhile, Corinne became increasingly interested in the exact wording of my statements.

“Did you tell them Wren was crying when she arrived, or did you say she was just fussy?”

“I told them exactly what happened.”

“Did you make it clear you didn’t see the bruise until after we left?”

“Yes.”

She relaxed slightly.

Then I added:

“I also told them she wasn’t acting normal when you brought her.”

Her expression changed again.

That was when I stopped answering her questions and started asking my own.

What Did You Know Before You Came to My House?

We were sitting in a quiet hospital waiting area when I finally asked Corinne directly.

“What happened at your house before you brought Wren to me?”

“Nothing.”

“Bryce told me about two in the morning.”

She stopped moving.

“He told you?”

That reaction gave me my answer.

“You knew.”

She looked away.

At first, she claimed she barely remembered what had happened.

Then, slowly, pieces began coming out.

That morning, she had noticed Wren wasn’t moving her left leg as much as usual.

Then she admitted she’d noticed discoloration near Wren’s thigh.

After another few minutes, she acknowledged seeing some swelling.

I stared at my sister.

“So Bryce told you something happened with that leg during the night. In the morning, Wren wasn’t moving it normally. You saw a dark mark. You saw swelling. And then you brought her to my house and told me she was teething?”

Corinne started crying.

“I didn’t know what to do.”
