I had always imagined my wedding day would be unforgettable for all the right reasons, but it ended up being memorable for a reason I never could have anticipated. It all started when my sister decided to bring a lie detector test to the celebration.
The wedding was in full swing, and Mark and I were on cloud nine! The atmosphere was electric, and everyone was enjoying themselves to the fullest.
Then, without warning, my sister Melissa grabbed the microphone and announced, “I’ve got a game for everyone! I’ve been planning this for months — I saw it online!”

It turns out she had brought in a professional, complete with a real lie detector machine. She explained the game: my husband and I would take turns answering funny questions while hooked up to the machine.
It sounded like a fun time, so we went along with it. We laughed through questions like, “Have you ever sneaked a midnight snack without telling your partner?” Everyone was having a great time, and the room was filled with laughter as guests took turns asking us their own quirky questions.
Then, out of nowhere, my uncle stood up, cut in front of the line, and with a serious expression, said, “Now it’s my turn to ask a question!” His tone was calm but deliberate. “Mark, did you ever cheat on my niece?”
Wait, what? I thought. Where did that come from?
Mark let out a nervous laugh, glancing around at the shocked faces of everyone else in the room.
“That’s a ridiculous question, Uncle Sam. I don’t think I need to answer it,” Mark replied, trying to brush it off.
But Uncle Sam wasn’t smiling.
“I think you should,” he said, his voice steady. “If you’ve got nothing to hide, what’s the harm in answering?”
My heart began to race.
“Mark,” I said, attempting to ease the tension, “It’s just a game. Let’s not take it too seriously, alright?”
Mark shot me a quick look, his jaw clenched. “Exactly. It’s just a game, and that question is crossing the line.”
But Uncle Sam wasn’t backing down. “Then why not answer it? If it’s such a joke, prove it.”
Mark’s hands balled into fists, his expression hardening. “Because it’s insulting. I don’t owe anyone an answer to something that ridiculous.”
“Mark,” I said softly, reaching for his hand. “Please, just answer it so we can move on.”
But he shook his head. “No, Harlene. I’m not answering that.”
“Mark,” I said, my voice shaky, “if you don’t answer, I’m not sure I can move forward with this wedding. I need to know there’s nothing being hidden.”
“Fine,” he snapped, glaring at Uncle Sam. “No, I have never cheated on Harlene.”
The lie detector beeped and the screen flashed red. “LIE DETECTED” appeared on the display.
“What?” I whispered, my mind racing. How could this be?
Uncle Sam grinned.
