Rich Old Man Dresses as Homeless and Visits Huge Grocery Store to Determine His Heir – Story of the Day

Part 2 of 2

Lewis, just 25 years old, had dropped out of college due to financial struggles. Despite being the youngest in the store, he carried himself with surprising authority.

“Lewis, you can’t be serious,” Lincy, one of the staff, protested. “Would Mr. Hutchins ever have tolerated someone like this in his store?”

“I know exactly what Mr. Hutchins would have done, Lincy,” Lewis retorted firmly. “Now get back to your duties before I report this to him.”

Turning to Mr. Hutchins, Lewis softened his tone. “I’m so sorry for how you’ve been treated, sir. Please, follow me.”

Lewis guided Mr. Hutchins inside, fetched a shopping basket, and personally went around the aisles gathering groceries. After paying the bill himself, he handed the bags over to the older man.

Mr. Hutchins’ eyes filled with tears. “Thank you, young man,” he said, his voice unsteady. “May I ask you something?”

“Of course, sir,” Lewis replied with a warm smile.

“Why did you stand up for me when everyone else turned their backs? You could’ve ignored me like the rest, and no one would have known.”

Lewis paused for a moment before answering. “Well, sir, years ago, I was in a tough spot. I came here looking for work with nothing—no experience, no home, no money. Mr. Hutchins, my boss, gave me a chance. He hired me, helped me find a place to live, and asked for only one thing in return: to work hard and treat others with kindness. That lesson stayed with me.”

Hearing this, Mr. Hutchins smiled knowingly. “Thank you, Lewis,” he said softly. Internally, he thought, You’ve proven yourself, my boy. You’re the one I’ve been searching for.

Seven years later, after Mr. Hutchins had passed away, Lewis received a phone call from Mr. Carter, Mr. Hutchins’ lawyer. To his shock, he learned that Mr. Hutchins had left him everything—his business, assets, and even a heartfelt letter explaining the “homeless” disguise. In the letter, Mr. Hutchins revealed that he had been searching for someone who embodied kindness, integrity, and hard work, and Lewis had passed the test with flying colors.

Moral of the Story:

  • Kindness and Respect Go a Long Way: Lewis’ compassion and willingness to help a stranger without expecting anything in return are a powerful reminder to treat others with humanity.
  • Good Things Come to Good People: Mr. Hutchins saw Lewis’ sincerity and dedication, and as a result, he chose him as his heir. A kind heart and a strong work ethic can lead to incredible opportunities.
