Those were the first words Colleen Mercer said to me after my divorce from her son became official.

We were standing outside a family courthouse in Charlotte, North Carolina. I had spent six years calling that woman Mom.

I had driven her to appointments, brought groceries when she was sick, quietly helped with bills when money was tight, and swallowed every uncomfortable comment she made about my inability to give her a grandchild.

Now she looked at me as though those six years had meant nothing.

My former husband, Derek Mercer, stood several feet behind her.

He could barely look at me.

“Claire, please don’t make this harder,” he said. “We tried for years. Nothing happened. Sienna is expecting a baby, and her family has connections that could completely change my career.”

I studied the man I had once believed I would grow old beside.

Then I asked quietly, “Are you absolutely certain I was the reason we never had children?”

His face changed.

Years earlier, Derek had undergone medical testing. The results showed that his chances of becoming a father naturally were extremely low.

I had never told Colleen.

Derek had begged me not to.

So whenever his mother blamed me, I remained silent because I thought protecting my husband’s dignity was part of loving him.

Now he was using the very secret I had protected to justify replacing me.

Colleen folded her arms.

“None of that matters anymore. Sienna is pregnant. Tonight we’re introducing her properly to everyone.”

Then she smiled.

“I spent almost forty thousand dollars on the reception.”

I stared at her.

“Forty thousand?”

She proudly explained that she had borrowed money and used her lake cottage as collateral because Sienna supposedly came from one of Atlanta’s wealthiest development families.

Once Sienna’s father helped Derek become a regional executive, Colleen believed the debt would be insignificant.

I picked up my two suitcases.

“Then I hope tonight is everything you expect it to be.”

What they didn’t know was that their future daughter-in-law wasn’t named Sienna.

She wasn’t wealthy.

And she wasn’t expecting Derek’s baby.

Her real name was Tessa Monroe.

She was an actress.

And I was the woman who had hired her.

The Secret Derek Never Knew

Two months earlier, I had received a phone call that changed my life.

My mother’s older sister, Margaret, had passed away after a long illness.

She had no children.

Over four decades, she had built a successful group of small restaurants, invested carefully in commercial property, and accumulated a portfolio worth several million dollars.

I was her only beneficiary.

After taxes and legal matters, the inheritance was worth a little over $5 million, not including several properties.

I remember standing in the grocery store that evening, almost laughing from disbelief.

I bought Derek’s favorite steak, fresh vegetables, flowers and a bottle of sparkling cider.

I wanted to surprise him.

I imagined telling him that he could finally leave the job he constantly complained about. We could buy a house together. We could travel. We could help his mother.

But while Derek was upstairs showering, his phone lit up on the kitchen counter.

A message appeared.

It was from his assistant, Brittany.

“Have you told your wife yet? You promised you wouldn’t stay trapped in that marriage forever.”

My hands went cold.

I opened the conversation.

They had been seeing each other secretly for months.

But what hurt most wasn’t discovering another woman.

It was discovering what my husband said about me when I wasn’t there.

He called me boring.

He complained that I dressed too simply.

He blamed me for our lack of children.

He wrote that he would leave as soon as something better came along.

That night, I threw away the dinner.

And I said nothing about my inheritance.

I Needed to Know the Truth

For several days, I considered confronting Derek.

But one question wouldn’t leave me alone.

If he was willing to betray me for an assistant at work, what would he do if someone appeared who represented everything he had always wanted?

A glamorous future.

That was when I found Tessa Monroe, a twenty-nine-year-old actress who worked in regional theater and commercials.

I told her exactly what I needed.

She would become “Sienna Caldwell,” the daughter of a wealthy Atlanta property developer.

I arranged elegant clothing, rented a luxury car and provided a separate credit card for expenses.

“I’m not asking you to force him into anything,” I told her. “Just meet him. Let him believe you’re interested. I need to see what he chooses.”

Tessa hesitated.

“And if he chooses you?”

“Then I’ll know I still have a marriage worth saving.”

He didn’t.

It took less than two weeks.

Tessa met Derek at a business networking event.

She mentioned that her father was looking for executives for several new projects.

Derek immediately became interested.

Soon he was coming home late.

He bought new suits.

He began talking constantly about investors, promotions and “the next level.”

Even Brittany disappeared from his messages.

Apparently, she had been good enough when Derek thought she was an upgrade from me.

Then someone wealthier appeared.

His Mother Fell Even Faster

Colleen became fascinated with Sienna before she even met her.

The first time Tessa came to the house wearing an elegant dress and carrying an expensive-looking handbag, Colleen treated her like royalty.

Suddenly everything about me irritated her.

My clothes were too ordinary.

My cooking wasn’t sophisticated.

My family wasn’t important enough.

Then came the final piece of the performance.

Tessa showed Derek and Colleen an altered ultrasound image suggesting that “Sienna” was expecting a baby.

Colleen nearly cried with happiness.

“I’m finally going to be a grandmother!”

That evening Derek placed divorce papers in front of me.

“Sienna is having my child. Claire, this marriage is over.”

I looked at him for a long moment.

Then I signed.

Colleen immediately began planning the celebration.

She reserved an expensive hotel ballroom in uptown Charlotte, ordered elaborate floral arrangements, live music and an extravagant dinner for more than one hundred guests.

She believed she was welcoming a wealthy daughter-in-law and securing Derek’s future.
