Part 2 of 3

My Attorney Asked One Important Question

That afternoon, I walked into the office of Elliot Mercer, an attorney I had known since law school.

He handed me black coffee.

“Still no sugar?”

Despite everything, I smiled.

“You remembered.”

“You complained about sweet coffee for an entire semester.”

Then he opened a legal pad.

“Tell me everything.”

“Eight years of marriage. Prenuptial agreement. One child, seven years old.”

He immediately looked up.

“Owen comes first.”

“Yes.”

“What are you asking for regarding custody?”

“I want his primary home to remain with me because Graham travels constantly. But I want Graham to have meaningful, predictable time with him. Owen loves his father.”

Elliot nodded.

“Good. What about money?”

“Nothing that belongs to Graham’s family.”

That surprised him.

“Meredith, you understand that you may be entitled to certain marital assets.”

“I understand. I want a fair division of what we built during the marriage. I don’t want his family’s company, trust funds, or anything that existed before me.”

Then I told him about the coastal house in Manchester-by-the-Sea that my parents had transferred to me years before my marriage.

I explained my investment accounts.

Everything was documented.

Then I hesitated.

“There is something Graham doesn’t know.”

Elliot put down his pen.

The Husband Who Never Asked

My grandfather, Theodore Winslow, had built a private investment firm decades earlier.

Before I ever met Graham, he created an irrevocable trust for me.

That trust held a significant minority interest in Winslow North Capital.

Elliot stared at me.

“How significant?”

“Just under twelve percent.”

His expression changed.

“Does Graham know?”

“No.”

“Were distributions ever mixed with marital accounts?”

“No.”

“Used for the house?”

“No.”

“Owen’s expenses?”

“No. I kept everything completely separate.”

Elliot leaned back.

“Then why didn’t your husband know?”

That question was harder.

“At first, because I wanted to know whether Graham loved me without knowing what my family had.”

“And later?”

I looked at my coffee.

“Later, I realized he never asked.”

Graham knew my grandfather had worked in finance.

He knew my family was comfortable.

He knew I had attended law school without debt.

But he never asked what I had done professionally before marriage, why certain people called my mother for financial advice, or why my grandfather’s name opened doors.

Eventually, I stopped volunteering information.

And somehow, we both became strangers while living in the same beautiful house.

Graham Finally Came Home

That evening, my parents helped me pack.

Owen was downstairs building a Lego spaceship with my father when the security system chimed.

Graham walked inside.

Yesterday’s shirt.

Dark overcoat.

Exhausted eyes.

His gaze landed on the boxes.

Then on me.

“Meredith.”

“Hello, Graham.”

He lowered his voice.

“Where’s Owen?”

“Downstairs with Dad.”

His shoulders relaxed slightly.

At least he had asked about our son first.

Then his expression hardened.

“You posted that message to my entire company.”

“I did.”

“You named Vanessa.”

I nodded.

“That part was wrong.”

He looked genuinely surprised.

“What?”

“I was angry. I publicly involved her in something I could not prove. I shouldn’t have done that.”

Graham stared at me.

“Vanessa and I aren’t having an affair.”

“I believe you.”

That confused him even more.

“Then why are you doing this?”

I looked toward the basement stairs.

“Because last night our son asked me why his father doesn’t want to come home anymore.”

Graham went completely still.

It Was Never About One Night

His face changed.

“Owen said that?”

“Yes.”

Graham looked down.

“I’ve been working.”

“You’ve been avoiding us.”

“That’s not fair.”

“The fifth overnight absence, Graham.”

“I was dealing with the Denver acquisition.”

“With Vanessa?”

“With an entire team.”

“Then why did you tell me you were having dinner alone with Mark?”

Silence.

That was the answer.

Finally, Graham said:

“Because I knew you’d be upset if Vanessa was there.”

“So you lied because honesty was inconvenient.”

“I was trying to avoid another argument.”
