Part 2 of 3

I had expected Trevor to be angry about losing the house.

I hadn’t expected strangers to claim an interest in it.

PART 2 — WHAT MY SON HAD PROMISED

The Debt Behind the Mansion

Howard spread several documents across his conference table.

“Trevor owes a significant amount of money,” he told me. “The exact total is still being verified, but one private loan alone is approximately two million dollars.”

I stared at him.

“Two million?”

He nodded.

“It appears he represented that he had an ownership interest in the River Oaks property and that a title transfer was forthcoming.”

“There was never going to be a transfer.”

“Then his representations may have been fraudulent.”

I leaned back.

Trevor had lived in a multimillion-dollar house without paying a mortgage. He drove an expensive sports car, hosted elaborate parties, and regularly spoke about his investments.

I’d assumed he was doing well.

“Where did the money go?” I asked.

“We don’t know all of it. There are business losses, personal debts, and expenses associated with maintaining his lifestyle.”

Howard pointed to a copy of a loan document.

“This is why I’m concerned. He’s been using your name and Cedarline’s reputation to make his financial position look stronger.”

I remembered Trevor boasting at family gatherings that he had substantial real estate holdings.

I’d thought it was exaggeration.

Now I wondered how many people had believed him.

“Am I responsible for any of this?”

“Not merely because you’re his mother or because Cedarline owns the house. But we need to examine every document to make sure nobody forged an authorization or created another exposure.”

I nodded.

“Then examine everything.”

As we spoke, my phone lit up with an unfamiliar number.

Howard glanced at it.

“Don’t answer.”

A message appeared.

Your son owes us money, Mrs. Sutter. Selling the property won’t make the problem disappear.

Howard photographed the screen and asked me to preserve the message.

“We’ll handle this through counsel,” he said.

For the first time since the birthday dinner, I felt genuinely uneasy.

Trevor’s behavior hadn’t simply been cruel.

He had built an expensive life around promises he couldn’t keep.

The Envelope at My Gate

Two evenings later, I returned home from a medical appointment and noticed a black SUV parked near my gate.

A man in a charcoal coat stood beside it.

I stopped my car at a safe distance and called Howard.

He advised me to remain inside the vehicle while he contacted the security service he’d arranged after the threatening messages.

The man approached only as far as the gate.

My phone rang.

“Mrs. Sutter? My name is Lyle Voss. I’m here regarding your son’s financial obligations.”

“You need to speak with my attorney.”

“We’ve tried. I thought a personal conversation might be more productive.”

“Coming to my home uninvited isn’t productive.”

He paused.

“Your son used your property to support his borrowing.”

“He had no authority to do that.”

“That creates difficulties for everyone.”

“It creates difficulties for whoever believed him.”

A security vehicle pulled into the driveway behind me.

Voss glanced toward it.

“I don’t want trouble, Mrs. Sutter.”

“Then leave.”

He placed a sealed envelope on the stone gatepost.

“You should see what your son signed.”

He returned to the SUV and drove away.

The security officer retrieved the envelope after checking the area.

Inside were copies of financial documents, photographs, and a draft separation agreement.

I sat at my kitchen table and began reading.

Some documents appeared to show Trevor meeting another woman at a hotel.

Others suggested Kristen had known about his financial problems for months.

But the document that disturbed me most was a proposed agreement referring to Cedarline’s assets as though Trevor controlled them.

Attached was a paragraph discussing the possibility of seeking authority over my financial affairs if I refused to cooperate with certain transfers.

I read it three times.

The language was conditional, and the document appeared to be a draft rather than a signed agreement.

Still, seeing my own name in that context made me feel sick.

I called Howard.

“There’s something in this envelope you need to see.”

“Don’t send it to anyone else yet. I’ll have someone collect it.”

“Howard, they’re talking about my finances as though I can’t make my own decisions.”

His voice became firm.

“Then we document what they’ve done, verify what’s authentic, and respond through the proper channels.”

I looked at Raymond’s photograph on the hallway table.

I’d spent years protecting Trevor from disappointment.

Now I was having to protect myself from my own son.

“I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!”

The following afternoon, Trevor arrived outside my gate.

He was driving the silver sports car he’d purchased two years earlier. His suit was wrinkled, and he looked exhausted.

I spoke to him through the intercom.

“What do you want, Trevor?”

“Mom, please. I need to talk to you.”

“You can talk from there.”

He looked toward the security camera.

“Are you seriously keeping your own son outside?”

“Yes.”

His shoulders dropped.

“Kristen left. She took some documents and money. Everything’s falling apart.”

I waited.

“I made mistakes, Mom. I know that.”

“You did.”

“I was trying to keep the business going. I borrowed money because I thought I could fix things.”

“By telling lenders you owned property that belongs to Cedarline?”

He looked away.

“I thought you’d eventually transfer it to me.”

“I never said I would.”

“I’m your only son!”

“That doesn’t make you the owner of everything I’ve worked for.”

He rubbed his face.

“Mom, those people are serious. I need help.”

“What kind of help?”

“Money. Enough to settle things before they get worse.”

There it was.

Not a question about my injuries.

Not an explanation for what happened at his birthday.

Another request for money.

“Trevor, I won’t pay your debts.”

He stared at the camera.

“You’re going to let your own son lose everything?”

“I’ll help you find an attorney. I’ll help you gather the records and tell the truth. But I won’t give you money to conceal what you’ve done.”

His face tightened.

“You always have to make me feel small.”

“I didn’t make you borrow two million dollars.”

He gripped the gate.

“You don’t understand what it’s like having everyone expect you to be successful.”

“I understand pressure. I’ve spent forty years running a company.”

“It’s different for me.”

“Then explain how.”

He couldn’t.

Eventually, he lowered his head.

“I’m sorry about your birthday dinner.”

I waited.

“I shouldn’t have touched you.”

My throat tightened.

“No. You shouldn’t have.”

“Can we just move past it?”

I looked at the bruising still visible along my cheek.

“Not today, Trevor.”

He stood there for another minute before returning to his car.

As he drove away, I wondered whether he’d meant his apology.

I wanted to believe he had.

But I also knew that wanting something didn’t make it true.

The Document With My Husband’s Name

That evening, Kristen called.

I almost let the call go unanswered, but Howard had advised me to preserve communications rather than engage in arguments.

I answered and kept the conversation brief.

“Gloria, I know Trevor’s been bothering you.”

“What do you want, Kristen?”

“I want you to understand that I’m protecting myself.”

“From what?”

“From his lies. His debts. Everything he’s dragged me into.”

“Then speak to your attorney.”

She laughed.
