Part 2 of 3

“I just want to see them.”

Part Four: The Family Behind the Green Door

We reached Providence the following morning, after a long drive through Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, and the quiet stretches of New England highway where autumn leaves scattered across the pavement.

Caroline lived in a three-story brick townhouse on a peaceful residential street, with dark green shutters, white curtains, and a small front garden filled with late-blooming chrysanthemums.

It was nothing like the enormous estate we had once shared outside Philadelphia, and perhaps that was why it seemed so welcoming.

There were children’s rain boots beside the front steps, a little wooden wagon near the gate, and a wreath decorated with dried leaves hanging on the door.

Benjamin parked across the street.

A few minutes later, the door opened.

Andrew stepped outside first, wearing jeans and a charcoal jacket, followed by a little boy carrying a red plastic shovel.

Oliver hurried toward the garden, where he began investigating a patch of damp leaves with the seriousness of a child convinced that he had discovered something remarkable.

Then Caroline appeared, holding Hannah’s hand.

She wore a cream cardigan beneath her coat, and when she smiled at something Oliver said, I recognized the woman I had fallen in love with so many years earlier.

Andrew bent down as Hannah stumbled on the doorstep, lifting her easily into his arms.

“Again, Daddy!” she laughed as he raised her gently into the air.

I felt something inside me give way.

It was not anger at Andrew, although I had expected to feel that, but grief for the ordinary moments I had missed and the simple affection another man had earned through thousands of small, dependable acts.

Before Benjamin could stop me, I opened the car door.

Andrew noticed me immediately, his expression becoming watchful as I approached the garden gate.

Caroline turned toward the street, and the smile disappeared from her face.

“Nathaniel?”

“Hello, Caroline.”

She instinctively moved closer to Andrew.

“What are you doing here?”

I glanced at the children.

“I found out about Oliver and Hannah. I needed to see you.”

Her face tightened.

“You shouldn’t have come without calling.”

“I tried calling. Your husband answered.”

Andrew stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitaker, I think you should leave for now. The children don’t need to be part of this conversation.”

I should have listened, but years of giving orders had left me poorly equipped to accept boundaries.

“They’re my children, too,” I replied, louder than I intended.

Oliver immediately moved behind his mother’s legs.

The frightened expression on his small face silenced me more effectively than anything Andrew could have said.

I had traveled hundreds of miles hoping to meet my son, and within moments, I had become someone he wanted to hide from.

Caroline knelt beside him, gently brushing his hair away from his forehead.

“It’s all right, honey. Why don’t you and Hannah go inside with Daddy?”

Andrew took the children into the house, returning a moment later after leaving them with a family friend who had been visiting.

Caroline remained near the gate.

“You want to know why I didn’t tell you?” she asked.

I nodded.

“Because I tried, Nate. I tried so many times, and every time I needed you, there was another meeting, another emergency, another reason your business mattered more.”

She looked toward the house.

“When I finally understood how deeply involved you had become in those questionable business arrangements, I couldn’t imagine bringing babies into that environment, especially with your mother insisting that every family decision belonged to her.”

I remembered my mother’s cold instructions, her expectations about loyalty, and the way Caroline had gradually stopped expressing opinions around her.

“Andrew helped me rebuild my life,” she continued. “He was a close friend of my brother, and when I moved here, he made sure I had somewhere safe to stay. He didn’t ask me to be grateful forever. He simply showed up, day after day.”

She paused, gathering herself.

“Those children have a good father, Nathaniel. They have a peaceful home. Please don’t take that away from them because you’ve suddenly realized what you missed.”

For the first time, I understood that the question was not whether I deserved to know my children.

It was whether my presence would make their lives better.

Part Five: The Trouble That Followed Me

Before I could answer, Benjamin approached from the car with his phone pressed against his ear.

His expression had changed.

“Nathaniel, we have a problem. Your cousin learned where you went.”

My cousin, Garrett Whitaker, had spent years trying to gain control of the family company, and unlike me, he had never bothered pretending that its questionable activities were merely unfortunate complications of business.

“What does he want?”

“Your mother told him about the children. He’s already contacted several people here, and he’s threatening to involve your family unless you give him control of the company.”

I looked toward Caroline, whose face had gone pale.

“How did he find us?” she whispered.

I had no satisfactory answer.

Andrew came back outside when he heard the tension in our voices, and after Benjamin explained the situation, he immediately called his security colleagues and the local authorities.

Within minutes, we learned that several unfamiliar vehicles had been seen circling the neighborhood, and Andrew calmly asked Caroline to take the children inside while he arranged for everyone to remain safely away from the street.

“You brought your family problems to our home,” he told me.

“I know, and I’m sorry.”

“Then help me keep the children out of it.”

We had barely finished speaking when two dark SUVs stopped near the intersection.

Garrett stepped out, accompanied by several men I recognized from our company’s security division.

He approached with the confident smile he always wore when he believed he had found someone else’s weakness.

“Well, Nate, you’ve certainly been keeping some interesting family news to yourself.”

“Go home, Garrett.”

“Your mother thinks those children belong with the Whitaker family. And I think you’ve become too distracted to run the business properly.”

“They’re not bargaining chips, and neither is Caroline.”

He glanced toward the townhouse.

“You should have considered that before coming here.”

Andrew remained beside me, his phone connected to the authorities, while Benjamin stood near the driveway documenting the encounter.

When Garrett attempted to move toward the gate, I stepped in front of him.

“Whatever disagreement you have with me, you leave this family alone.”

He shoved past my shoulder, and in the confusion that followed, I lost my footing on the wet curb and struck my side against the edge of a stone planter.

Pain spread sharply beneath my ribs, but I remained standing long enough to prevent him from reaching the entrance.
