Over the previous year, he had recorded Claire during moments when she was exhausted or emotional. Whenever she talked about leaving with Owen, he suggested those recordings could be used to portray her as unstable.

Little by little, Claire’s world became smaller.

She left her job after Derek repeatedly insisted that working was making her overwhelmed.

He discouraged friends from calling.

He controlled more of their household finances.

And whenever Claire tried to spend time alone with me, somehow Vanessa appeared.

Claire once wrote me a letter explaining everything.

I never received it.

“I kept telling myself I was protecting you,” Claire said. “Then eventually I started thinking maybe nobody would believe me anyway.”

I walked around the desk and hugged my daughter.

For months, I had wondered why she had become distant.

Now I understood.

She hadn’t walked away from us.

Someone had slowly built walls around her.

Outside, the musicians began playing.

Dean looked at me.

“Cancel the wedding.”

I looked through the window.

Guests were taking their seats.

Vanessa was preparing to walk toward the ceremony.

Derek stood near the front, talking casually with one of my business partners.

I looked at Owen’s tablet again.

“No.”

Claire stared at me.

“Dad?”

“The ceremony is going to start.”

Dean frowned.

Then Caleb understood.

“You want everyone to see the recording.”

I nodded.

“For almost a year, they’ve been telling my daughter that her version of reality can’t be trusted. I want witnesses when that ends.”

The Wedding That Never Happened

When the music started, Vanessa walked toward me smiling.

For a moment, I felt something close to grief.

Not because I still wanted to marry her.

I was grieving the future I had imagined.

She reached me and took my hand.

“You look nervous.”

“I’ve been thinking.”

“About what?”

I looked toward our guests.

“About how much a person can fail to notice when he’s afraid of being alone.”

Her smile weakened.

Before the officiant could continue, I raised my hand.

“Before we begin, there’s something everyone needs to hear.”

Vanessa released my fingers.

“Walter, what are you doing?”

Caleb activated the large screen that had been prepared for photographs during the reception.

Owen’s crooked video appeared.

Then Derek’s voice filled the space.

“He’ll be exhausted after the reception. Put the documents with the bank papers and he’ll sign without looking closely.”

The guests became silent.

Vanessa froze.

Derek stood up.

Then everyone heard Vanessa’s voice.

“Claire isn’t a problem anymore.”

People turned toward my daughter.

The recording continued.

Finally came the sentence that changed everything.

“Then you and I won’t have to keep pretending.”

Silence followed.

Vanessa recovered first.

“That conversation is completely out of context!”

I looked at her calmly.

“Then explain the context.”

She opened her mouth but nothing convincing came out.

Derek began moving toward a side exit.

Three men stood in his path.

They were business associates from whom he had borrowed money using my name.

One of them stepped forward.

“Before you leave, Derek, I think we need to discuss the money you accepted after telling me Walter supported your project.”

Derek stopped.

The Woman With the Green Notebook

Then Helen walked to the front.

She carried her notebook.

Vanessa’s face changed when she saw it.

“You?”

Helen ignored the question.

She began reading.

Dates.

Transfers.

Questions about my property.

Questions about insurance.

Conversations with vendors.

She also listed personal belongings of Margaret’s that had gradually disappeared from the house.

Photo albums.

A handmade blanket.

Several framed family photographs.

Even our wedding portrait.

Vanessa had told me she was simply helping me move forward.

Now I understood what she had actually been doing.

She wasn’t redecorating my house.

She was gradually erasing the life that existed before her.

First Margaret from the walls.

Then Claire from my confidence.

Eventually, perhaps, me from control of everything I had built.

Vanessa finally lost her composure.

“After everything I’ve done for you, you’re humiliating me in front of everyone!”

I kept my voice steady.

“What you’ve done financially is being reviewed by professionals. You’ll have the opportunity to explain every transaction.”

My attorneys were already examining the joint account and securing my other financial arrangements.

Vanessa looked toward Derek.

He looked away.

That single glance said more than either of them intended.

Claire Finally Spoke

Then Claire stepped into the aisle.

Derek immediately turned toward her.

“Claire, come with me. This has gotten completely out of control.”

She stopped several feet away.

“I’m not going anywhere with you.”
