Two Seven-Year-Old Twins Ran Into My Billion-Dollar Headquarters Calling Me “Dad” — Moments Later, My Former Fiancée Revealed That the Accident That Supposedly Left Me Unable to Have Children Had Never Been an Accident at All

Part 2 of 3

I searched for her for months.

Eventually I stopped.

I assumed she had decided that a future with me was too complicated.

Now two boys who looked remarkably like me were standing in my lobby holding an envelope written in her handwriting.

Before I could open it, one of the revolving doors moved.

A woman stepped inside.

My entire body went still.

Sloane.

She wore a simple charcoal coat, her dark blond hair pulled loosely behind her shoulders.

She looked older than the woman in my memories.

More tired.

But unmistakably Sloane.

The twins ran toward her.

“Mom!”

She hugged them before looking over their heads at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then I held up the envelope.

“Tell me they’re mine.”

Her eyes filled.

“They are.”

The lobby disappeared around me.

All I could see were her and those two boys.

“Seven years?”

She nodded.

I struggled to keep my voice steady.

“You let me live seven years believing I would never have children while my sons were growing up somewhere else?”

Sloane closed her eyes briefly.

“I know what it looks like.”

“Then explain it.”

She glanced around the lobby.

“Not here.”

The Secret Inside the Envelope

We went upstairs to my private conference room.

Camille stayed outside with security while the twins sat near the windows eating muffins someone had brought them.

Sloane placed the envelope on the table.

Inside were copies of birth records, old photographs, medical documents, and several printed emails.

My hands trembled as I looked through them.

One photograph showed Sloane holding two newborn babies.

Another showed Mason and Bennett around their first birthday.

Then kindergarten.

Then their seventh birthday.

Seven years of my children’s lives compressed into a handful of photographs.

I looked at her.

“Why wasn’t my name on their birth records?”

Sloane leaned forward.

“Because I thought putting your name there would put them at risk.”

I almost laughed.

“From whom?”

She slid one of the emails toward me.

The sender was someone I knew very well.

Graham Voss.

My former chief financial officer.

A man who had helped me launch Hale Technologies from a rented office twelve years earlier.

A man I had trusted.

“Graham?”

Sloane nodded.

“Before your accident, I discovered irregular transfers connected to one of his investment companies. At first I thought it was an accounting mistake.”

She swallowed.

“Then I realized money was being redirected through companies connected to people on your board.”

I stared at the documents.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

She pulled out another sheet.

It was an email addressed to me.

I had never seen it.

“Someone had access to your accounts,” she said. “Messages disappeared. Meetings were changed. Information was being intercepted.”

Then she looked directly at me.

“And shortly after I told Graham I was going to you personally, your accident happened.”

The room suddenly felt cold.

I remembered the specialist.

The diagnosis.

The certainty with which everyone had told me what my future would look like.

Sloane spoke quietly.

“Everett, there’s something else.”

She handed me a newer medical report.

I read the first paragraph twice.

Then a third time.

The original prognosis had been overstated.

There had never been absolute proof that I couldn’t father children.

“The doctor?”

“Worked for a medical group partly funded by one of Graham’s companies.”

I sat back.

The pieces began connecting in ways I didn’t want to believe.

Why She Stayed Away

I looked toward the twins.

They were drawing something on the conference-room notepad.

Mason was concentrating intensely.

Bennett was making him laugh.

My sons.

The word still felt impossible.

“You could have contacted me later.”

Sloane’s expression broke.

“I almost did. Dozens of times.”

“Why didn’t you?”

“Because Graham knew I was pregnant.”

That silenced me.

She told me that after leaving Chicago, she received anonymous messages warning her to stay away from Hale Technologies and keep quiet about what she had discovered.

Nothing happened directly to her.

That made the warnings worse.

They were subtle.

A photograph of her new apartment.

A message mentioning a doctor’s appointment.

A note referencing the twins’ preschool.

Someone wanted her to know they were watching.

So she moved repeatedly.

Wisconsin.

Michigan.

Then a quiet town in Indiana.

She raised Mason and Bennett without using my surname.

“Why come back now?”

She looked at the boys.

“Because last week Bennett came home from school and said a stranger asked whether his father owned a technology company.”

Every protective instinct I possessed woke at once.

Sloane continued.

“That was when I knew hiding wasn’t protecting them anymore.”

My phone buzzed.

An unknown number.
